Rossett News Update - 4 November 202

Presentation Evening

Invitations are being sent out to our last year’s Year 11 students inviting them back to Rossett’s annual Presentation Evening on 24 November 2022.  The purpose of the evening is to celebrate the achievements of all students in last year's GCSE examination cohort - but also to particularly to reward those students who excelled in past subjects. The evening will commence with a celebratory drink from 6.45pm.

Due to the popularity of this event Year 11 students may apply for a maximum of three tickets (one for the individual student and two guests).

American Exchange

The American Exchange returned to Rossett on Friday last week after two fantastic weeks in the USA.  During the second week pupils experienced a day as a student at Falmouth Middle School, attending lessons alongside their exchange partners and then - after a “pot luck” dinner with all of the host families - they said their goodbyes and headed to Salem and Boston.

Amongst other activities in Boston, they got see the musical Hairspray, go on a duck tour in a hybrid bus/boat, tour Fenway Park (home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team) and visit Harvard University before the final flight home.  The pupils were excellent ambassadors for the school and were complimented by waiters, tour guides, airline stewards and hotel staff on their excellent behaviour.  We look forward to the return visit by the Maine contingent, next June.

Harrogate Town ticketsCelebrating success in PE

We are pleased to celebrate students' outstanding contribution to our PE department. As a token of appreciation students have been nominated by our PE team for excellent performance this first half term of the academic year.  We have teamed up with our partners at Harrogate Town and nominated students will receive two tickets for next week's match against Carlisle.

Congratulations and well done to:  Maya Dixon (Year 7), Imogen Cowan (Year 7), Emma Umpleby (Year 8), Honey Screen (Year 8), Toby Peart (Year 8), Cameron Simpson (Year 9) and Finlay Wrightson (Year 9).

LRC News from Mr Asker

It was great to welcome students back to the LRC this week and judging by the ‘drop box’, which was spilling over, a huge amount of reading was enjoyed over the half term.

I can highly recommend watching 'Imagine' on BBC iPlayer with an interview with former children’s laureate Malorie Blackman. Malorie talks about her life as a writer, her highly acclaimed 'Noughts and Crosses' series and her friendship with Stormzy who has regularly talked about how important her books were to him when he was growing up.  Malorie also talks very movingly about the importance of libraries in her childhood when her family became homeless, and she would spend as many hours as possible in her local library reading and doing her homework.

It is no wonder that this week the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee has recommended that the Government invests in modernising libraries across the country recognising the vital work that libraries do in supporting local communities.  We can only hope that they are listening.

It is worth mentioning again that we are open every day at break, lunch and after school for students to come and borrow a book or just drop by for a chat about books, latest recommendations and author news.  I am very happy to meet reluctant readers as well and if I am told by a student, “I don’t like reading” my approach is to say back (politely) “No, you just haven’t found the book that is for you yet. Let me see if I can help you.”

I hope you have restful and bookish weekend when it comes.

Harrogate Civic SocietyHarrogate Civic Society Schools History Prize

Harrogate Civic Society has established a Schools History Prize with the purpose of encouraging the study of the history of Harrogate among school students. This is part of the Society’s wider aim to celebrate their past and of its History Group to research, record and communicate the history of the town.

The prize gives students an opportunity to do their own research on the history of the town and to write it up for a wider readership. It should also be interesting and fun.  For further information about how your child can enter with a chance of winning a cash prize and book token please click here.

We are pleased that we shall, once again, be supporting the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal for 2022. The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal will focus on how wearing a poppy shows you care and helps the Royal British Legion to continue its vital work supporting the Armed Forces and veterans.

Our Year 8 students will be visiting form rooms next week to allow students the opportunity to donate to the appeal and wear their poppy with pride.

Please encourage your child or children to bring in a contribution for the collection.  The suggested donation is at least £1.
