Rossett News Update - 9 June 2023

Rossett Heroes

This week we are running a Rossett Heroes special;  we know that we have some very special, selfless and kind Rossett Heroes who help staff and students every single week, giving up their break  and lunchtimes to do so. They unquestionably make our school community - and especially our wonderful learning resource centre – a better place. Mr Asker has included some details of the wonderful work that they do below:

This week’s Rossett heroes are some of our student librarians who we would like to thank for the huge and selfless effort they have made in the past few weeks in leading a major re-organisation of our Learning Resource Centre. The original idea came from Millie in Year 9 who wanted to organise the books into genres as she believed this would help students have a better experience in the LRC and make it easier to find books that they wanted to read.  She then followed this up with a detailed plan on what the new layout would look like, how it would work and how we would move so many books whilst keeping the LRC open.  Given the green light by a slightly nervous Mr Asker,  Millie then approached Mr Fell who was fantastically supportive and negotiated some time out of lessons for her and her very able helpers Iona, Dan and Ollie who were keen, supportive and positive.  On the day that we moved the books they made a brilliant team, supporting each other, stayed calm (mostly!) and showed real resilience and determination.  At this point they were then supported brilliantly by the Year 10 student librarians Tallulah, Matan, Mia Ann and Holly who also worked incredibly hard and showed great kindness to the Year 9 team in helping them to see the plan through.  Whilst the job was only partly finished by half term the LRC continued to run, books waiting to be shelved were stored neatly and new labels were made to help students negotiate the new layout.

Since returning to school each student librarian has taken responsibility for a genre area and are now busy alphabetising the books, making sure that books have been correctly allocated and are continuing to work as a supportive team.  At the time of writing, Mia Ann has also created a brilliant classics section. Holly has already finished the horror shelves, Matan has just about finished the comedy section and everyone else is working hard too.

It is one thing to have an idea but it is something else altogether to turn words into actions, to make a genuine difference to how the LRC now runs and operates.  Student and staff response has been unanimously positive.  But above all this every one of these Rosset reading heroes has shown kindness, positivity, personal warmth and a genuine desire to make our school a better place.  Our thanks go to them all.

Millie Baxter (Year 9),  Iona Cheyne (Year 9), Ollie Summers (Year 9), Dan Johnson (Year 9), Tallulah Crawford Syson (Year 10),  Mia Ann Hobson (Year 10), Matan Braunstein (Year 10) and finally, Holly Binns (Year 10).

Sixth Form Students raise funds for Harrogate & District Soroptimist 'Toilet Twinning' scheme

At the Sixth Form Graduation ceremony, 'Sharing our Skills' project students, supported by Harrogate & District Soroptimists, worked to raise £240 to enable Rossett Sixth Form to twin their toilets with a school toilet block in a village in Malawi. Harrogate & District Soroptimists Sue Williams, Sandra Frier and Lynne Clark had the pleasure of presenting a Toilet Twinning Certificate to students, Poppy Magill and Pinky Kornlup with the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Keyworth

Harrogate & District Soroptimists are partnering with Rossett School with their 'Sharing our Skills' project, by offering Sixth Form students the opportunity to gain experience and transferable skills to take forward into their future, spread the word about important global issues and get involved in community projects.

The Toilet Twinning project has been the Soroptimists international project, aimed at reducing poverty and improving health ‘one toilet at a time. Funds raised like this make a real difference to help those in desperate poverty.
