Rossett News Update - 7 July 2023

Rossett Heroes

Next week - because various students have tried to make such nominations this year - we are going to have a different Rossett Heroes special; one for staff. If any member of staff has gone above and beyond the call of duty with their kindness in helping others this year, we want to hear about it from parents and students. If you wish to make a nomination, please email aotway@rossettschool.co.uk

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Amelie Rowlands, Jovi Hennigham-Smith and Holly Binns in Year 8,  along with Sophie Langley, Charlie Benson, Evan Kirk and Jo Eyles in Year 12.

  • Amelie was nominated by a very thankful Ms Tolliday who wrote, ‘Amelie has noticed that my film posters are a bit lack lustre (I am not an artist at all) so she decided to create one of her own for me! They are definitely more eye-catching and will attract lots more students to my club. Other members of staff have  also commented on how wonderfully polite and cheerful Amelie is all the time and how brilliant she was in the school production. Amelie, you are a very deserving Rossett Hero!
  • Jovi was nominated because he has raised a fantastic amount of money for charity. In recent weeks he has been taking part in the ‘one hundred skips a day’ challenge to raise money for cancer research and he’s had his challenges during the trial in attempting to do as many skips as he can in a row. There’s been tangles and trips along the way, but Jovi has demonstrated excellent resilience in addition to his selfless desire to raise money to help others. Jovi, you’re clearly a hero of the community and we’re delighted that you are part of our school. You are a Rossett Hero!  If you would like to read more or donate to Jovi's campaign click here.
  • Holly, Charlie, Evan and Jo were all nominated by Mr Elcock who stated, "Jo Eyles and Evan Kirk have been brilliant this week preparing and delivering assemblies about pride month to all year groups. Holly Binns has designed a poster and is helping to run the bake sale and Charlie Benson has crocheted a large number of bee toys by hand to sell at the bake sale". You’ve all done a wonderful thing in giving up your time in helping to make Rossett a better place. You are all Rossett Heroes.
  • Finally, Sophie was nominated by fellow Sixth Form student Tristan who emailed to say that he wanted to nominate Sophie because of her, …efforts in creating the bake sale, as despite not being a part of the club which organised the bake sale, she has put an incredible amount of effort into the actual baking of the bake sale with her making almost 60 cakes! She also put £30 of her own money into materials in-order to fashion the best possible cakes, it wouldn't be understating it in the slightest to say this bake sale would struggle to go ahead without her and it is especially incredible when you consider she's not even part of the original group. And despite all the effort she puts in, she's too kind to take credit for any of it. Thus, I'm writing to nominate Sophie for the Rossett Heroes program so that her effort to be charitable can be recognised and so it sends the message to the Rossett community that efforts for the sake of charity are always to be acknowledged and celebrated. Wise words from our Head Boy and it is clear that Sophie absolutely deserves to be a Rossett Hero.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Year 13 Prom Celebrations

Our Year 13 students celebrated the end of their A' Levels and their time at Rossett School at their 'Prom' on Wednesday. Hosted, once again,  at 'The Cedar Court Hotel', Sixth Form staff, teachers and tutors provided a welcome reception for the students who sat down to a two-course meal, danced to the resident DJ, and captured memories of the evening in a fun photo booth provided by our own Mr McKenzie. A fantastic evening was had by all. We wish all  of our students every success and happiness in their future endeavours and look forward to hearing about their many and varied adventures in the years ahead.

Runswick Bay Biology Fieldwork

On a beautiful, breezy day, Mr Lee, Miss Taswell and Mrs Kay took fourteen Year 12 students to Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire. In this gorgeous location they braved the slippery, seaweed strewn coastline to perform three rocky shore ecology investigations: Do dog whelks increase with acorn barnacles? Do limpets prefer shale or sandstone? Does exposed bladder wrack have less bladders? Well, only a statistical analysis of the data will provide answers. Either way, our industrious students conducted themselves with great teamwork, much initiative and practical skill. Mostly they worked with great humour and enjoyment, even completing their work in time for ice cream and a stone-skimming competition (which Louie Buckle won). A fun and memorable time was had by all.

Music Tour a Great Success

Our fantastic music students returned from a tour of Belgium on Monday where they performed at various venues and enjoyed some sightseeing activities.  From climbing the Belfry in Bruges to playing the Samba drums in Warpenplein Ostend the students had a brilliant time performing and soaking up the culture of Belgium.  Thank you to the staff who gave up their time to prepare and accompany the students on this trip.

Year 12 Students Visit Oxford University

Last week, eight academically more able Year  12 students had the fantastic opportunity to  visit  the University of Oxford. They were able to spend the night in student halls at Brasenose College. The history of Brasenose College, Oxford stretches back to 1509, when the college was founded and is located opposite the Radcliffe Camera in the centre of Oxford. The students  were able to discover more about student life and studying at a world class university and spent time attending events, taster lectures and talking to staff and current students about their experiences.

Year 8 Cooking Group

Ms Winterschladen launched a cooking group for the summer term to give a group of our Year 8 students some culinary experience. So far, they have made Beef Ragu, Chicken Kiev and Macaroni Cheese. Students have really enjoyed their experiences so far and enjoyed the range of foods they have made. Students get to eat their food as a group afterwards and critique their culinary masterpieces.

LRC News from Mr Asker

A study published this week from The University of East Anglia has shown that English Libraries generate at least £3.4 bn in yearly value through services such as supporting children’s literacy, digital inclusion and health.

It remains as clear as it ever did that investment in libraries gives huge returns for both the local community and the public purse.  As I have said here before, local and school libraries matter. They are the best of us and offer a vast range of services, support and provision. Whilst the borrowing of books remains fundamental to their role Libraries offer this and so much more.  From knit and natter groups, to mental health support, for drop in sessions for new parents, to IT access and support and help in getting a new job and much, much more!  Given the many challenges that we are currently facing Libraries are ideally placed to help their communities through these difficult times.  Hopefully this report will prove again that Libraries need sustained investment.

Here at Rossett LRC HQ we have now finished the re-organisation of the fiction sections.  In the same way that when you decorate one room in your house you then feel the need to keep going we are now tackling the non-fiction shelves.  Yesterday every non-fiction book was taken off the shelves, every shelf dusted and cleaned and now we are sorting, book by book, which ones we are going to keep and which we are going to “weed” out and pass on to charity; local groups etc. Ideally we will have a brand new look library for September which is ready to support every student and member of staff. Have a bookish weekend everyone.

Important Information: Flamingo Land Consent Must be Returned

If your child is attending the Flamingo Land trip later this month you should have completed a consent form.  If you have not completed this consent, please click here to do it now.  Students will not be able to attend this trip without consent therefore please complete by Tuesday 11 July at the latest.
