Changes to Rossett Sixth Form - September 2023

As you may be aware we have recently put in place significant changes regarding the Sixth Form for September 2023.   Students in Year 11 who have applied to join the Sixth Form at Rossett as their first choice, will be taught at the Sixth Form at Harrogate Grammar School.  This will allow them to have a breadth of choice and continue their education in a setting that has a proven track record of care, opportunities, and outcomes and marks the start of a collaborative provision between the two schools.  Teachers from Rossett school will be delivering some of the subjects at Harrogate Grammar School and key members of staff from our pastoral team will support the transition. This will allow for some continuity with our school.

Although in the early stages, this collaboration will develop and grow, resulting in a truly joint Sixth Form offer for both Rossett and Harrogate Grammar School students; providing the very best educational opportunities for all our young people.  We will keep you informed of developments regarding KS5 provision in the coming months.

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Nancy, Yi Han, Martha and Alyssa all in Year 7 and  Marcus in Year 8.

At lunchtime this week, Mr Grainger was on his way back to his classroom when he noticed that there was some litter around the entrance to Junior Block. He asked for help from students that were in the area and  Nancy, Yi Han and Martha  came forward. You were all responsible and acted like role models to help our local environment become a cleaner place; you are Rossett Heroes!

Alyssa was nominated by Miss Taswell because when a classmate felt unwell, Alyssa stayed with her friend and offered support in her time of need. ‘Completely unfazed, mature and kind, she is an absolute credit to herself and to Rossett.’ Alyssa for being kind and supportive to someone in need; you are a Rossett Hero!

Marcus was first nominated by MFL teacher Mrs Bowman because ‘every single morning he makes a great effort to have a Spanish conversation with me, asking how I am. He always cheers me up and most importantly, he cares for everyone and always does the right thing.’ I can attest to this in my History lessons – Marcus is the opposite to a mood hoover, it doesn’t matter what time of day it is or what mood you are in, when Marcus turns up you will find yourself smiling! Marcus for brightening our days, for your relentless cheerfulness and for making Rossett a happier place, you are a Rossett Hero!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Coronation emblemLRC News From Mr Asker

A polite reminder to all Year 7 parents that on Friday 26th May, and in collaboration with our good friends Imagined Things Bookshop, all students in Year 7 will get to hear an hour long talk and presentation by award winning children’s author Vashti Hardy as she talks about her new book The Serpent of the Sands.  It is great to see that parents have already ordered a copy of the book and if you would like your child to get a signed copy of this book then please see the recent letter sent to you for further details. More information about Vashti and her books can be found here

There is no end of interesting reading online about the Coronation this weekend.  The information here   appears to be as good as any and is full of interesting facts and information for your child to enjoy.

Here in Rossett LRC HQ I have been ordering some new books for the library with an emphasis on books for older students this time especially Sci Fi and Horror.  Recently there has been some demand for Stephen King books so we have a few of his books arriving next week. Plus, some Neil Gaiman short story collections and some classic Sci Fi authors like Arthur C Clarke, Ursula K Le Guin and John Wyndham.  If your child likes these sorts of books then please do encourage them to pop along to the LRC.

Have a long and bookish weekend.

Mr Asker

French Pen Pal Exchange

At Rossett, we are very proud  to give our students the opportunity to become global citizens. One of our Year 9 classes in MFL has been corresponding regularly with their pen friends from Brittany at the collège Jean Monnet in Janzé near Rennes and have enjoyed finding out about their hobbies, work experience and life in France.

There was so much excitement last week as our students opened a very heavy parcel filled with….not French dictionaries, but a multitude of French specialties and sweets! The “Fraises Tagada” were a firm favourite and students had fun translating the jokes from their “Carambar” sweet wrappers! Our Rossett students are now keen to share a little bit of Yorkshire with their French pen pals…
