Rossett News Update - 3 February 2023

Thank you

We would like to thank everyone in our school community for their well wishes following the road accident involving two of our students yesterday morning.  Both of the students who were injured in the incident are being treated in hospital  and will have a long road to recovery ahead.  We are working with their parents to offer anything they need at this time.  We  also continue to support our other students  following this traumatic event and ask you to contact your child's year team in the first instance if your child is in need of welfare support.

Student Catering Survey

Our student catering survey will be sent to students on Monday.  This will enable all students  to give us their feedback on our current offer and their experience of lunchtimes.  We will use this information to further improve mealtimes whilst ensuring we meet the healthy schools standards.  Please encourage your child to complete this survey.

Sixth Form Physicists visit CERN

The Sixth Form Physicists have been enjoying the warm alpine sunshine and learning about particle physics on their trip to CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland.  CERN is the world’s largest Scientific collaboration and particle experiment; this morning students enjoyed a talk by a researcher followed by a guided tour to some parts of the site.  They were lucky enough to see round the ‘Antimatter Factory’ where anti-hydrogen atoms are made, tested and annihilated. Students are looking forward to visiting some more museums and exploring Geneva further before we return home on Saturday.

Apprenticeship Fair 2023Apprenticeship Information

Today Year 13 were involved in a special assembly about apprenticeship pathways. Guest speaker Rowan Todd from ASK Apprenticeships gave some great advice and insight into how apprenticeships work and the range of brilliant opportunities out there for students who have not chosen university as their progression pathway. All information from the presentation will be shared with students and parents and if you have any questions about apprenticeships please contact the Sixth Form Team.

On Monday 6th February the First Direct Arena in Leeds is hosting the annual Leeds Apprenticeship Recruitment Fair from 2pm to 8pm. The event host many employers and apprenticeship providers and is a great opportunity to further research this pathway and find out about future careers. Tickets are free but you do need to book in advance. More information about this fantastic event can be found by following this link https://www.leedsforlearning.co.uk/Article/117587

LRC News from Mr Asker

Last week I joined the Book Trust Book Buzz Panel for 2023.  Book Buzz is a scheme where children in Year 7 and/or 8 choose and receive a free book from a shortlist of recent fiction and non-fiction titles.  This happens at the start of the academic year so Book Trust are now choosing the titles for children to enjoy next autumn.  As you can imagine it was very hard choosing the final titles given the wealth of wonderful books and authors that all the panel members were given to read.  At this stage the books chosen remains confidential but I will update you when I know more.

Lockwood & coWatching 'Lockwood and Co' on Netflix this week is a timely reminder that watching great TV shows can lead us back to the amazing books they are based on.  In the LRC we have all the Lockwood and Co books written by Jonathon Stroud and they are excellent.  Similarly there is huge excitement in the Gaming world for next Friday’s release of Hogwarts Legacy.  This action role playing game set in the Harry Potter and wider wizarding world universe will remind us (again!) of the incredible books that J K Rowling wrote and her huge contribution to children and young adult literature. Last year the sale of Harry Potter books grew by 5% proving that even though it is now 25 years since the release of The Philosopher's Stone these books remain loved and valued by so many people.  Naturally we have all the Harry Potter books in the LRC and the scripts to the Fantastic Beasts films also.

With half term coming please encourage your child to come into the Learning Resource Centre next week so they have something to read over the holiday.

Have a bookish weekend when it comes.
