Rossett News Update - 29 September 2023

50th Anniversary Celebrations

We   had a fabulous day of celebration yesterday!  We welcomed past Headteachers to a special assembly where they shared their most memorable moments of their time leading Rossett School.    Mr Whittle (1984-1994) and Mrs Hunter (1994-2014) were presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of their leadership.  Later in the day Rossett School's first Headteacher, Mr Kennerley, who led the school from 1973 when it first opened, joined us to plant a tree to mark the school's 50th anniversary.

Staff and students had the option to come  in 1970s fancy dress - with prizes awarded for the best costume - or gold, black and red clothing.  The day was full of activity with a 70s themed quiz, our biggest ever cake bake, a retro lunch, bubble release and an 'R50' aerial photograph.  The  student celebrations finished with a performance from our Samba Band, DJ Dent and alumni Leah Waddington playing along on her saxophone to the 'tunes', followed by a whole-school performance to 'Cha, Cha' slide.  Students were sent home with a goody bag and commemorative key ring.

The celebrations continued into the evening when we were joined by ex students and staff for a drinks reception and buffet.  Our guests were treated to a tour of the school - some hadn't been here for a good few years and saw many changes!  We were delighted to be joined by so many friendly faces in celebration of our school and its history.  Thank you to all of our guests who joined us on the day.

Celebration

Our roving reporter, Mr West, created a fantastic video of the day which we are delighted to share with you - we hope this gives you a taste of what a fantastic celebration it was for staff, students and visitors.

Rossett's Biggest Ever Bake Sale

As part of the day's celebrations staff and students hosted our biggest ever cake sale.  There were over 220 cakes and students helped to sell them from their designated year group area at lunchtime.  Over £550 was raised for our chosen charities -thank you to everyone who baked and bought on the day and Mrs Buxey for organising the event.

Rossett Heroes

Joe Bowers, Rory Dixon and Daniel Horner in Year 11. After school earlier this week the boys were cycling with their friend who sadly had an accident which left him with injuries. The mother of the injured friend wrote to the school to say that throughout the whole incident the boys, ‘…handled the situation in an incredibly calm and mature manner [and they] are a credit to their parents and the school.Boys, there are plenty of adults who would have struggled to handle such a situation and we are so very proud of you for helping as you did – you are Rossett Heroes!

There is also Yi-Han in Year 8 who was nominated by Mr Elcock because, ‘There was a student who had taken time out of lesson as he was feeling upset.  At the end of the lesson Yi-Han sought out the student to bring them their bag and to check up on them to make sure that they were ok.’ Looking out for others is the Rossett way and by doing this you are helping to make the Rossett community a better place. That’s wonderful Yi-Han, you are a Rossett Hero this week!

If you were nominated as a Rossett Hero, this week please see Mr Otway for your reward and certificate.

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

LRC News from Mr Asker

Hitler stole pink rabbitTo help celebrate our 50th anniversary this week I am delighted to share a list of children’s and young adults’ books published in the 1970’s. I have tried to list books to suit every taste and preference. Read on….

  • 'Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret' by Judy Blume – as important and relevant as ever, this coming-of-age story (recently made into a film) continues to help young people navigate growing up. Not to be missed.
  • 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams remains a hugely popular story that has real bite and depth to it. An incredible read.
  • 'The Bridge to Terabithia' by Katherine Paterson has become a little overlooked recently.  An amazing story to rediscover.
  • 'When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit' by Judith Kerr is a deeply moving and powerful retelling of true events as Judith Kerr and her family flee Nazi Germany in the 1930’s. A powerful testimony of hope, courage, and humanity.
  • 'The Dark is Rising' by Susan Cooper is an incredible fantasy book starting a five-book series by the same name. Set at Christmas this could be the ideal book to read in the next few months.
  • 'The Machine Gunners' by Robert Westall is a brilliant story set in the northeast in World War 2. Unputdownable from start to finish.
  • For fans of comic books why not try 'Fungus the Bogeyman' by Raymond Briggs, wonderfully inventive, funny and entertaining by the author of The Snowman.
  • Finally, 'The Trumpet of the Swan' by E B White is sometimes overlooked by the authors more famous book Charlotte’s Web but is worth a read. It’s wonderful stuff.

Naturally, there are many books published in the 1970’s that are missing here but hopefully this will give you some inspiration to pick up a book and get reading.

Have a bookish weekend everyone.

Mr Asker

European Day of Languages

Students at Rossett celebrated the European day of languages on Tuesday and enjoyed fabulous dishes at lunchtime ranging from mussels in a cream sauce and  tagliatelle to Paella, goulash and a delicious tiramisu! In lessons students listened to European songs, used a variety of interactive activities such as 'guess the country', the secret agent language challenge app or had a go at designing a t shirt for the European day of languages 2024 competition.
