Rossett News Update - 24 November 2023

DEARDrop Everything and Read (DEAR)

We are expanding our already excellent reading provision at Rossett, by introducing 'Drop Everything and Read' (DEAR).  DEAR is proving very popular in schools across the country as teachers and leaders recognise more and more the importance of reading in achieving success at school and beyond.  The DEAR Programme is designed to give every student the opportunity to be read to by an adult, un-interrupted, for an hour per week.  We have chosen a series of engaging novels for our students in Years 7 to 10 to enjoy during their form time each week. The point of DEAR is to provide an opportunity for students to enjoy literature and develop their love of reading.    This is an exciting new venture for the school, and we feel, strengthens our already excellent reading curriculum.   Whilst we wait for the novels to arrive, Ms Tolliday has selected some spooky short stories which students have been reading this week.  When the books arrive, we will give you some more information on the novels they will be reading. Please ask your child about reading at form time and what they have enjoyed about it.

Visit by External Reviewers

As we continue on our journey of rapid improvement we will be inviting some external reviewers into school on Monday. Through our membership of the Red Kite Alliance we have commissioned two experienced Headteachers to join us for the day. They will visit lessons, observe social times and meet with staff, students and senior leaders. The day will provide evidence of the impact we have already had and feedback on the areas we need to continue working on.

Year 7 Visit to Pantomime

Our Year 7 students experienced a memorable trip to Harrogate Theatre yesterday to see the pantomime, Dick Whittington.  Harrogate Theatre is renowned for its panto productions and this year didn't disappoint.  The students enjoyed joining in with the sing-a-longs and silliness and recounted some of the jokes on their walk back to school.  Thank you to Mrs McLurg and her team who organised the trip and even prepared individual bags of sweets for the students to enjoy during the performance.

Project Trust visit Year 13 students

Year 13 welcomed Miss Bettson-Budett from Project Trust yesterday afternoon as part of our focus on Post-18 progression.  Project Trust is an education charity that offers young people across the UK 12 and 8-month international volunteering experiences where students develop confidence, resilience, awareness and leadership skills.   Students found out about the many different gap year options available where they gain transferable skills which can be taken into future careers.  See below or contact Mr Keyworth for further information.

Flu VaccineReminder:  Flu Vaccinations

The flu vaccine is being offered to all students from Reception to Year 11 again this autumn/winter.  The nasal flu vaccine not only protects your child from the flu but also protects family and friends - especially those who are elderly, young babies, or those who have serious health conditions.  The nasal flu vaccine is very affective at reducing the spread of flu and is painless to administer.

The Yorkshire Immunisation Team are visiting Rossett School on 6 and 7 December 2023. To give consent for your child to have the flu vaccine, please click HERE.  Even if you do not wish for your child to have the vaccine, please complete the online form so that your wishes can be recorded.
