Rossett News Update - 24 March 2023

RESPECTRespect

This week, we have introduced a new rewards token - Respect.  This is part of the 'R' series which includes resilience, reflectiveness and responsibility.  We have introduced this additional token so that students across the school can be recognised for their respectful attitude to each other, members of staff and the wider community.  A culture of mutual respect is paramount to a safe, happy and thriving school community.  We have so much of it at Rossett already but know there is work to do, as there is in wider society, to ensure this is experienced by everyone, everywhere, all of the time.

Every member of staff was given two tokens to award this week.  They had the difficult task of identifying two students they believe have stood out in this regard. Below is a small selection of students awarded this token, this week and the reasons they got them:

Adam Taverner and Ellesha Matthews - these two students have exemplified a respectful attitude to their peers, me and themselves throughout their time in English. Ms Dargie

Chloe Blackburn - for always being respectful of those around her and understanding how others feel. Ms Normand

Dan Johnson - for modelling politeness and kindness all of the time. Ms Winterschladen

Millie Knipe and Will Jarvis - for always being respectful towards students in my lessons, and consistently making mature and considered contributions to discussion- we have discussed a lot of controversial topics recently.   They are also incredibly polite to me every lesson.  Ms Bannar-Martin

Aaron Senior - is polite when he addresses teachers and his peers, he has a gentle manner and is patient when he supports other students if they need help. He will go out of his way to be helpful. Ms Clarkson

Lily Walker - having more respect for everything she is doing.  She is working hard in lessons and is keen to succeed. Ms Wood

Soufi Kebeheld the door open for me to come through and another pupil.  He regularly displays this type of behaviour. Mr Binns

Ben James - has developed and grown into one of the most respectful boys in the school. Ms Nathan-Geary

Nathan Buckle- everything Nathan does and says is done with respect, he truly is one of the most polite, well mannered, hardworking and helpful students I have ever met. Ms Nathan-Geary

Dan Golding – for always being polite, conscientious and thoughtful. For supporting String Group and Funk Band, being highly engaged and enthusiastic in lessons, and also taking the time to accompany other GCSE students in their performance exams despite having to also rehearse for his own. Mr Bentley

Sofiah Clayton – for consistently being kind, thoughtful, proactive and conscientious. Not only in lessons, but also regarding production rehearsals, funk band and singing lessons. Mr Bentley

Marcus Ridsdale - every single morning makes a great effort to have a Spanish conversation with me asking how I am. Always cheers me up. Most importantly cares for everyone and always does the right thing.  Ms Bowman

Martha Buono - a truly lovely, hardworking, well mannered, kind and caring girl. Ms Bowman

Elliot Haywood, Harry Cimmerian, Megan Horner, Jacob Clemence - for helping the catering staff organise tables and clear up after the lunch break, without being asked to help. Ms Taswell

Sophie Bohanna and Zain Mahmood  - always polite, courteous, and caring towards others. Ms Hatfield

We will share more names next week.  It has been a pleasure shining a light on the vast majority of students that try everyday to make our community a better place.

Rossett Heroes

This week our Rossett Heroes are Megan, Elyza and Angel who have helped to make the Rossett community a better place.

Megan in Year 9 was nominated by Mrs Buxey who said that Megan “has attended all of the school production auditions and rehearsals up to press and has displayed exceptional behaviour and attitude. She is throwing herself into the routines and is keen to do additional work at home to help with costume design, organising resources for the show and helping with anything that she can get stuck into.” Megan, we are so proud of what you are doing to make the school show a success and to help Mrs Buxey - you are a Rossett Hero!

Angel in Year 8 has been noticed by Miss Shah being incredibly kind, supportive and helpful to a student who has recently joined the school; helping her new friend to settle in and encouraging her to make good choices. Angel, we are so thankful to you for helping to make Rossett a welcoming place – you are a Rossett Hero!

Elyza in Year 8 is our first parental nomination for Rossett Heroes.   Year  8 student Amelie Rowland's mum  has nominated Elyza  “for supporting Amelie whilst she is learning how to text by sending regular messages and encouraging responses, and generally for setting a good example of how to text. It may seem like a very easy task but it is very challenging for Amelie and Eliza is doing way more to include Amelie in this way than she will ever realise. Thank you Elyza!”  Elyza, thank you for helping to make our school an inclusive place – you are a Rossett Hero!

Heroes 2303

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Headteachers AwardFriday 5s Awards

Friday 5s is our on-going recognition of  those students who are nominated by their  year group for impressing their year team by doing something exceptional.  The students nominated are invited to meet the Acting Headteacher, Mr Saunders, every Friday during Period 5 where they receive their Headteacher's token and a letter to take home detailing why they have received this recognition.  This week's winners are:

Tiago Coelho (Year 7), Marian Glodean (Year7 ), Lilly Best (Year 8), Jayden Hodge (Year 8), Josh Pickard (Year 9), Sam Thompson (Year 10) and Michal Zdunek (Year 11)

Well done to them all.

Transition Showcase Evening

We are excited to meet our new Year 7 students and their parents/carers next Tuesday at the Transition Showcase Evening.  Due to popular demand we are running two sessions at 5.30pm and 6.30pm and parents/carers have been emailed with their allotted times.

During the evening students/parents/carers will hear from our current Acting Headteacher, Mr Saunders and the CEO of the Red Kite Learning Trust, Mr Sheriff as well as being introduced to the Year 7 pastoral team.  We will also be showcasing some of our students musical talents and some current Year 7s will be sharing their experience of Rossett School.  There will also be an opportunity to sample some of the delicious food on offer at our school.  We look forward to welcoming them to our school community.

Oxbridge Talk

A group of Year 10 and Year 11 students attended a talk for local schools at Harrogate Grammar School  this week, delivered by current students at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about university life, finance and the different courses they can study at Oxford and Cambridge. It was great to see the students so inspired and asking lots of thoughtful questions.

A group of Year 12 students also had the opportunity to attend a workshop for local schools at St Aidan’s School delivered by Oxford and Cambridge staff and students. This workshop looked at the application process to both universities. The students really enjoyed the event  and they received lots of useful guidance and advice.

Northumbria University Visit

This week representatives from Northumbria University visited  Rossett School Sixth Form.  Students in Year 13  attended this informative session during Period 1 to learn more about student finance and preparing for student life.

Our previous experience of these visits was that students find these visits both interesting and helpful,  inspiring them to do their very best in preparation for their forthcoming examinations and with their UCAS applications in mind. This is the most recent of our progression focussed guest speakers, following previous sessions from ASK Apprenticeships and local apprenticeship training provider, VQ Solutions.

Read-for-GoodLRC News from Mr Asker

As you will be aware, we take part in a number of activities and events to promote and celebrate reading and its many benefits.  If your child is in Year 7 we would like to remind you that Rossett school is taking part in the 'Read for Good' campaign once again this year.  More information can be found here.

The deadline for this is Friday 28th  April. This is a fantastic programme helping to improve the lives of children in hospitals across the UK including Leeds by giving them access to high quality books and story teller visits.  Anything you can do to support this programme with Year 7 would be greatly appreciated.

Here at Rossett LRC HQ it has been a really busy week with books flying off the shelf and the librarian elves working hard, as always, to keep the library heading in the right direction. With Easter fast approaching please encourage your child to come along and borrow some books to enjoy over the holiday.  We don’t have many rules or too much guidance but we certainly respect, understand and follow them every day.  Everyone is welcome, there are brilliant books to borrow and enjoy and we do our best to encourage everyone to enjoy reading for pleasure.

Have a book-ish weekend everyone.

Mr Asker

DT clubExtra-Curricular Programme

New extra-curricular clubs have been added to our Spring 2023 programme so please  encourage your child to take a look at the updated timetable and sign up to something new for both lunchtime and afterschool activities.

  • The Year 10/11 Boys' Rugby Team who played their final game of the season last night against King James's School  -and for some of the boys it was their last match for Rossett.  The final result was 38-15 - a fantastic end to a brilliant rugby season!  Thank you to everyone who came down to support the students - we even had a drummer - the fantastic atmosphere and encouragement was great to see.  Well done to all of the boys involved.
