Rossett News Update - 23 June 2023

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Taran Nijjar  (Year 10), Masoumeh Selehi with Larissa Medd  (Year 8),  Harriet Morris, Chloe Pomeroy, Megan Horner  and Adil Berisha  (Year 7).

Taran was nominated by Miss Taswell who saw Taran being kind in one of her lessons. The class were revising for a test and Taran noticed another student, who is relatively new to the class, was revising on his own. Taran asked to move and provided his classmate with company and moral support. Miss Taswell wrote, it was great to see Taran taking some initiative by being a kind person to make someone's day that bit better. Thanks Taran!’ What a wonderful thing to do and fully deserving of Rossett Hero status.

Larissa was nominated by a fellow student who wrote, I would like to nominate Larissa because I have found this week really hard and she has been there to brighten up my day. She is a great friend to have around every day.’ Larissa, we know you are a kind hearted soul and I’ve seen it myself in my lessons over the years. Thank you for making our school a brighter place, you are a Rossett Hero!

Masoumeh was nominated by Mr West who wrote, ‘Masoumeh Salehi decided to stay in the LSC on Monday lunchtime as another student was feeling unwell. Masoumeh normally spends lunch outside the LSC with her friends but made the decision to stay with another student as soon as she heard she was unwell.’ This is the sort of selfless kindness that we really value at Rossett. Great work Masoumeh, you are a Rossett Hero!

Harriet was nominated by Ms Harmer who wrote, ‘I’d like to nominate Harriet Morris Yr7 as Rossett Hero. She has been phenomenal in the Legally Blonde rehearsals as Stage Crew, helping organise a team of students much older than her – she has shown great leadership, organisation, and resilience during some very stressful,  hot days in the hall! Harriet, thank you for your impressive contributions in giving up your time to make our school performance a great success. You are a Rossett Hero!

Chloe was nominated by a fellow student who wrote,‘I would like to nominate Chloe Pomeroy for always being there when I need help and helping me practise dances in Legally Blonde.’ Staff have also noted what a wonderfully polite and helpful student Chloe is at all times. She is a magnificent role model. Chloe, you are a Rossett Hero!

Megan as also nominated by a fellow student who wrote, ‘I would like to nominate Megan Horner, for Rossett Heroes. Megan always puts 100% into every lesson and never fails to put a smile on everyone's faces. She is always making me rethink my answers and challenging them. As well as this, she is constantly spreading kindness to everyone. An example of this, is she is always offering to help teachers and students without asking. I think Megan deserves this for many reasons however overall she is always there for everyone and is a great friend and student. And I can confirm that your teachers all agree with this wonderful nomination Megan. Well done, you are a Rossett Hero!

Adil was nominated by Ms Barnett who said, ‘Adil has seen another  student really upset and crying and he was so kind and caring to this other student giving some much-needed advice on how to cope with stress. He's a really credit school and a pleasure to be around.’  Adil, the rest of the staff feel the same, you are always so polite and kind. You are a Rossett Hero!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Spotlight on Reading picture 2Spotlight on Reading

At Rossett, we prioritise ensuring all students are making progress in their reading ability.  This is because we know that a student’s ability to read well is directly related to their ability to access the curriculum and get the best possible outcomes.  The latest in our 'Spotlight On' series explains some of the work that is going on to ensure our students develop in to confident, fluent, and passionate readers and how we are trying to close the ‘reading gap’.   Click here to read more.

Legally Blonde - Wow, What a Show!

If you were lucky enough to come along to Rossett over the last two evenings to watch our production of 'Legally Blonde' I am sure you were blown away by our amazingly talented students who sang and danced their way through the performance.  The cast and crew have been working extremely hard rehearsing and perfecting the show for many weeks and we are delighted that all of their hard work has paid off.  From main characters of Elle Woods (Mille Smith),  Emmett Forrest (Louie Hogg), Serena (Natasha Eagland) Brooke Wyndham (Sofiah Clayton),  Pilar (Anwen Murray), Margot (Martha Connolly), Professor Callahan (Ashton Holdsworth), Paulette Buonofonte (Tara Campbell), Warner Huntington III (Toby Hudson) and Vivienne Kensington (Phoebe Connolly) to their supporting cast and crew we congratulate you on the hard work and talent that was evident in the two performances.  Thank you to Mrs McLurg and her team for the hard work and late nights required to present such a show.

Battlefields Trip Departs

50 Year 9 and 10 students departed after school today for a fantastic trip to the battlefields of Ypres and the Somme.  The students will be accompanied by authentically dressed British and German officers of the Great War and will visit Hooge Crater Museum, the Yser Tower Museum and the Menin Gate - plus many more fantastic learning experiences.  Follow our Facebook page here for updates throughout the trip which returns to Rossett on Tuesday 27 June.

American Exchange

The last few days of the American Exchange  were, once again, packed with lots of fun activities including a trip to Clifford's Tower and the Jorvik Centre in York.  The 34th exchange was then celebrated with a 'Pot Luck' supper on the school field and students, parents and staff enjoyed their final evening  before waving off their  Exchange partners on Tuesday morning.  Plans are well underway for the 35th American Exchange which sees our students visiting Maine, USA this October.

George OrwellLRC News From Mr Asker

I always enjoy these  stories about books returned very late to a Library and this one is no exception - click here to read more.

In an era of “alternative facts” and “fake news” it remains vital to read books like 1984 by George Orwell and many congratulations to this anonymous reader for returning the book so that others can read the stories timely message on totalitarianism and truth.

In Rossett LRC HQ we haven’t seen books as late as this but a Year 8 student, Elyza, did bring a book to the desk this week to take out which still had the old style ticket in with date stamps going back to the early 2000’s.  It was a lovely moment of library nostalgia and Elyza was more than patient as I explained (at length) about library tickets, cards and how you used to take and return books.

We are on the home stretch now in our fiction re-organisation and the student librarians are finishing off alphabetising the sections they are responsible for.  The sections that are not yet complete are looked after by our more “chatty” student librarians who do a bit of shelving and then prefer to have a natter before gathering up the next pile.  My attempts to speed them along have, inevitably, been met with withering looks.  We are getting there book by book.

I hope you enjoy a bookish weekend when it comes.
