Rossett News Update - 22 September 2023

Rossett School Open Day: 30 September 2023

We are delighted to invite parents/carers and children currently  in Year 6 to our Open Day on Saturday 30 September 2023.  The event, which is being held between 9.30am and 12.00pm, offers the opportunity to meet our current students and teachers and to  see the school in action.

There will be an opportunity for you to see and participate in workshops, lessons and competitions, as you and your child explore our school.   Staff will be available from each subject area to answer any questions that you may have about our exciting and unique curriculum and we would also encourage you to chat to our students, including our current Year 7s, about their experience at Rossett.

During the morning our Headteacher, Mr Milburn,  will give a presentation about the school and our educational philosophy and staff will also be available to talk about admissions, transport, extra-curricular activities, peripatetic music and SEND specialist staff will also be available.  A variety of refreshments will be available throughout the morning.

Rossett Heroes

Mack Spencer in Year 10 who last week was spotted Mr Otway helping a fellow student at the end of school. This student was concerned because he couldn’t find his sibling and Mack was a kind, calming presence, reassuring his fellow student and ultimately making sure he was okay up until he found his sibling. I saw Mack watching on with a smile before turning to go find his own bus. It was absolutely heart-warming to see and most certainly Rossett Hero behaviour.

Rose Gardner in Year 11 was nominated by our magnificent Executive Chef, Mr Ashburn who tells me that Rose is a polite, friendly young lady who is always appreciative of the kitchen staff and makes them all smile every day with how thoughtful she is towards them. Rose, we love our kitchen staff who all work so hard to keep us fed with the brilliant school dinner menus [we had ‘wild mushroom and horseradish cream on ciabatta’ this week, for example ] so we are delighted at how you make them feel appreciated and it speaks volumes about your character.

Soufi Kebe in Year 11 was nominated by Ms Meadows who wrote “I’d like to nominate Soufi Kebe for a Rossett Hero award for his mature attitude towards conflict resolution, and for his advice to other students when they’d had a disagreement.  He has been an excellent role model on this matter.Outstanding work Soufi and thank you for being a role model, I know Ms Meadows is really proud of you and the rest of us are too!

Ruby Webster, Ella Brotherton and Lily Hollowed in Year 11 were nominated by Ms Tolliday who saw them stop to help one of our new Year 7s who was struggling to connect her new iPad to the school Wi-Fi. They patiently took her through the process of how to connect her device step-by-step, as well as offering to showher where to go to find IT support. Girls, by doing this you are not only being kind, you are also showing our new students how we do things at Rossett School, so - as the quote at the bottom suggests - your kindness will continue long after this one incident. Thank you for your Rossett Hero behaviour!

Finally, Daniel in Year 11 nominated Alfie Medcalf in Year 10 because Daniel had lost his AirPods at break time and was very upset about it. Ms Murphy went out with Daniel at lunchtime to try to help him to find them on the football pitch and it was becoming increasingly obvious as time went on, that they weren’t going to find them. Just as they were considering giving up, Alfie came walking over with the AirPods. It turns out that Alfie had stumbled across them and set about trying to find out who they belonged to. Once he had somehow discovered their owner, he kept them safe before seeking out Daniel at lunchtime to return them. Alfie, what a hero, we are very proud of you!

If you were nominated as a Rossett Hero, this week please see Mr Otway for your reward and certificate.

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway otwaya@rs.rkltl.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Student Leadership Team

We have many wonderful students who continually strive to make our Rossett community a better place, as we see each week in our Rossett Heroes and Headteacher Friday 5 notices. We would like to invite students to make an even greater difference by joining our Student Leadership Team. Our current Sixth Form Leadership Team visited year group assemblies last week to invite students to apply to  represent their peers and work with staff to make a positive contribution to the Rossett School community. The closing date for applications is Friday 29 September and we are looking forward to receiving lots of interesting applications.  Students should click the link here to apply and begin the selection process.

50R

Reminder: 50th Anniversary

It’s 1973 and the United Kingdom has joined the European Union. The Godfather is the year’s best picture, George Foreman is heavyweight champion of the world and the first handheld mobile phone call is made in New York City. It is also the year Rossett High School opened it’s doors to students for the first time.

On Thursday 28th September we will be celebrating our golden anniversary and to mark this milestone we have a day of activities planned. This includes:

  • An assembly with past and present Headteachers
  • Activities to see how school has changed in the last 50 years
  • Rossett’s Biggest Bake Sale
  • A whole school photo on the field with students and staff marking out a giant R50 (please see below information regarding opting your child out of photographs and videos taken on the day)
  • An opportunity to take part in some retro sports
  • DJ Dent will also be joining in with the celebrations and there will be a photobooth and bubble machine.

We will be offering a 1970’s classic meal on the day with a 50% discounted price. At the end of the day all students will receive a retro goodie bag with a special ‘Rossett 50th’ keepsake.

In keeping with celebrating  the school’s original opening we will be having a 70’s fancy dress theme for both staff and students, with prizes for the best outfits. If you haven’t got clothes at the back of your wardrobes it might be a great opportunity to support our local charity shops for some retro gear!

If students are not able to come in fancy dress they can come wearing clothes that have a golden colour scheme to mark our golden anniversary, or dress in the red and black of our school colours.

Whilst it is a great chance to show off some fashionable flair, or even flares, we would ask that the outfit chosen for the day remains appropriate and respectful of others. We would ask that no wigs are worn on the day, footwear must be practical to walk around the school grounds and that clothing worn allows for full participation in a range of activities.

We hope to share our day of festivities with videos and photos on social media and, due to participant numbers it is not possible to apply the permissions already consented to.  Please be aware therefore that your child may be included in group photographs or videos which may be used immediately for event publicity purposes.  Your child should make staff aware if you do not wish this to happen.

If you have any happy memories of Rossett School from your family, and would like to share them, please contact us at office@rs.rklt.co.uk We would also like to invite former students and staff to join our current staff on Thursday 28th September 4pm-6pm to celebrate! There will be an opportunity to meet old friends (and make new ones), enjoy celebratory refreshments and have a tour of the school, please RSVP by filling the form available here.

CakesRossett's Biggest Ever Bake Sale

As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations we are hoping to hold our biggest ever whole school bake sale.  We are encouraging as many students and staff as possible to get involved by bringing in cakes, fairy buns, tray bakes, biscuits and cookies - home baked or bought are welcome!

Students should bring their contributions to DW4 next Thursday morning between 8.15am and 8.40am.  Each year group will then have a designated area where they will sell their treats to classmates at breaktime.  All proceeds of the sale will be donated to Rossett School's chosen charities selected by our student leadership team.  If your child would like to buy a cake please send them with a small amount of change.

European day of languagesEuropean Day of Languages

We are, once again, celebrating European Day of Languages on Tuesday 26th September.  Our Executive Chef, Mr Ashburn, will be adding a real buzz to the celebration with several European dishes which will be shared with students on the day.

All students will be taking part in  activities in their Modern Foreign Language  lessons, Year 7 students will be using the secret agent challenge app, and students will be offered opportunities to take part in competitions for homework.  We look forward to sharing pictures of the event with you in next week's Rossett News.

Boy 87LRC News from Mr Asker

This week students in Year 7 and 8 began to make their choices of a free book as part of the Book Buzz scheme from Book Trust.  Book Buzz is a national campaign to promote and encourage reading for pleasure. Every Rossett student in Year 7 and 8 gets to choose from a fantastic list of 16 titles and will receive their book in November or December. Here is a link to the books that your child got to choose from this year - The Bookbuzz books | BookTrust.  All these books are available in our LRC, local libraries and book shops if they would like to read more of them. I am sure they will!

This year’s Book Buzz has a particular significance for Rossett as, last autumn, I was asked to be a panel member who helped to select this year’s titles. Given the amazing quality of children’s writing these days, this was not an easy task as you can imagine! It was lovely to open my set of copies and see some of the books that I recommended should be on this year’s list.

It has been great to feel the “buzz” this week and the highlight of my week has been several students coming up to talk to me about how hard they found it choosing a book and how excited they are to get their new book and start reading.

Other news this week has been the start of Year 7 and 8 LRC visits. As it is the start of term we have focussed on a tour and an explanation/reminder about how the LRC works, what it offers and, as importantly, a chance to browse and take a couple of books home as well. All students to date have been attentive, calm and a pleasure to spend time with.  In the next few weeks students in Year 7 will focus on a project based on the brilliant book ‘Boy 87’ by Ele Fountain and I am looking forward to working alongside the English department as we explore this incredibly moving story. There will be more about the ‘Boy 87’ project soon. In the meantime, Year 8 will take part in LRC activities focussing on general skills but always finding time to enjoy reading for pleasure, a chance to change books and enjoy spending time in our wonderful LRC

As ever if you have a specific question about our library, reading for pleasure, how to help your daughter or son enjoy reading more then please do not hesitate to contact me at Askers@rs.rklt.co.uk

Have a bookish weekend everyone.

Extra Curricular Timetable

Rossett School is very proud of its extra-curricular programme for students, which enhances the curriculum and provides extra learning opportunities for all. There are a number of opportunities for your child to take part in extra-curricular activities at lunchtime and after school, here at Rossett.  We will endeavour to update you via this newsletter and form tutors when there are changes or additions to this timetable.

Year 7 students and parents are encouraged to review the timetable in detail as it will be expected that students take up at least one extra curricular activity.

The late bus to Leeds runs Wednesday to Friday and students need to sign up for this using the QR code which can be found in Reception.  To view this document in detail, please click HERE.
