Rossett News Update - 21 July 2023

Rossett Roar!

We are so proud of our students this term and are delighted to be able to share this fantastic video with you which demonstrates all of the wonderful activities your children have been involved with over recent months - we think it demonstrates how 'Remarkable' Rossett School is!

If the video player is asking you to sign in, the video can also be viewed here; Roar!.mp4

Rossett Heroes

Our last Rossett Heroes of the year are: Harriet Morris in Year 7; Angharad Grabham and Cameron Megginson in Year 10; Ted Meadwell-Pybus, Evan Chard and Logan Robson in Year 9;  Aayus Rai, Anna Lambert, Owen McDonald and Liam Mumford in Year 8.

Sports Leader Angharad was nominated by Mr Bulmer who said, ‘she has been absolutely amazing on sports day, organising the students and the timings so that the day ran smoothly’. Well done Angharad, we love having students helping us as part of the team and you are clearly an awesome team player and a Rossett Hero.

Cameron was nominated by one of his classmates who wrote, ‘Cameron always greets people politely, keeps his head down and does his work to the best of his ability. Further to that he’s just a ray of sunshine.’ I teach Cameron and I can absolutely agree with everything written here. We love getting student nominations and Cameron, you are definitely a Rossett Hero.

Evan was nominated by Mr Kilbride who wrote, ‘Evan Barnett led a group activity with his class and made every effort to include everyone. One student in particular was in need of encouragement. Evan spotted this, went over to the student, put his arm around his shoulder and discreetly encouraged him to continue; to which the student responded and joined in with the group. A very lovely moment from a very thoughtful and popular young man.’ It’s this sort of behaviour that makes Rossett such a special place. Evan, we’re really proud of you.

Mrs Dargie nominated Ted because, ‘Ted joined Rossett this year and has made a great impression already.  On the off-timetable day on Tuesday I was working with Ted all day and saw amazing leadership skills: he was thoughtful and considered, respectful of others and led by example.  His calm but authoritative manner ensured others followed him. Well done Ted!’ Ted, we’re delighted you joined our school, you’re exactly what we want from our students!

Logan was nominated by Mrs Wood who wrote, ‘Logan Robson was great on our off-timetable day yesterday. He was really calm and patient with other students and would happily explain the tasks to others when they didn't understand. He’s a brilliant team player!’ Thank you Logan for your Rossett Hero behaviour this week.

Owen was nominated by Mrs McFarlane who this week has been very busy tidying her room and preparing to move to a new classroom. At one point, she accidently dropped a box which made a loud bang that could be heard on the corridor. Owen came into the classroom looking concerned and asking if she was okay, which she was. At Rossett we are one big team who look out for each other, and Owen did exactly that. Owen, thank you for being a Rossett Hero!

Aayus and Anna were nominated by Ms Hawthorne who wrote, ‘I’d like to nominate Aayus Rai for just being a complete ray of sunshine for the whole year. It’s been an absolute pleasure to teach him and he’s always helpful in lessons, handing out books, glue sticks etc. He was just brilliant on the coach home from Flamingo Land too. I’d also like to nominate Anna Lambert for being the second ‘Mum’ in my form group throughout the year. She is an absolute delight, an amazing role model and has kept members of the form in line. She recently went on the music trip to Belgium and was just wonderful. She was also really caring on the way home from Flamingo Land. Anna and Aayus, you really do make Rossett a better place, largely through your relentless cheerfulness!

Liam was nominated by Mrs Bowman because he kindly invited a student to join his friendship group at Flamingo Land, looking after them and involving them all day. From what she witnessed then and throughout the year, Mrs Bowman says ‘He is a lovely warm-hearted person’. We agree! Well done Liam, thank you for helping others and being kind, we really appreciate it!

Finally, Harriet was nominated by Mrs Ula who wrote, ‘Today, the form groups were out on the 3G trying to complete the Evacuation challenge. Harriet’s group had almost completed the challenge, however one of the students was struggling. Harriet went to offer her help, support and some very kind words of encouragement to help her classmate finish the task. It was so lovely to see great teamwork. Well done Harriet!’ Harriet, you have all the qualities we love to see in our students and this episode is clear evidence of that. You are a Rossett Hero!

Final Exceptional Learners of the Year

This week a further group of students received their limited edition Gold Rosset pin badge after completing the full set of Exceptional Learner tokens.  Well done to:  Rachel Carsley, Pratha Devke, Natasha Littlejohns, Hollie Major, Claudia Asmussen, Ethan Phelps and Soufi Kebe.    We will publish a picture of Rachel, Pratha, Natasha, Hollie and Claudia in September as they were busy taking part in Sports Day when they received their award.

Fantastic culmination of our new rewards initiatives

This week saw the culmination of a range of new rewards initiatives. Four form groups enjoyed an off timetable lesson 'zorbing' on the MUGASs on Monday, having won the ‘class currency’ competition in their respective year groups.

A range of awards were also handed to students in our end of year celebration assembly this morning which included the Exceptional Learner Lottery draw. In this draw five students collected prizes which included a Nintendo Switch Lite (and game), a £50 Amazon Voucher, Flamingo Land tickets and a lunch pass for next half term. The 14 students entered into this draw have previously been congratulated for collecting the full set of Exceptional Learner Tokens, and awarded a Gold Rossett Pin Badge.

This term has also seen over 300 students collect prizes at break time as part of the weekly form tutor award initiative. It’s has been brilliant to see so many Rossett students being recognised for their remarkable work and conduct this year. We plan on continuing and  building on many of these initiatives through the next academic year.  Well done to all of our students who have worked so hard to receive these awards.

Zorbing

Flamingo Land

Over 700 students enjoyed a thrilling day out at the  Flamingo Land rewards trips this week.  All of the students had a fabulous day and enjoyed taking part in the video below (thanks to Mr West) which demonstrates how much the event was enjoyed - by both  staff and students!  On the day the 20 students who collected the most positive points this academic year were also awarded a prize, with huge thanks to our Rossett PTA who sponsored these prizes.

Off-timetable Days for Year 7-Year 10

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, year 7-9 enjoyed employing their team work, problem solving, creativity and communication skills by taking part in in a variety of outdoor skills builder activities.  These included 'toxic waste'; the lava river'; evacuation challenge and an orienteering treasure hunt.

Students worked in teams for each challenge and really had to work together to sucessfully complete it.  In addition, Year 8 also enjoyed a 'trading game' activity where they had fun buying and selling shares in a stock exchange simulation run by NYBEP.

Year 10 students took part in 'Futures Day' where they learnt about their options for work when they have completed their GCSEs.  They also undertook a variety of activities to support their development of employability skills.

Sports Day

On behalf of everyone in our PE Department  we would like to say 'thank you' to all of the students who took part in this week's Sports Day.  As always, the students demonstrated our Rossett School core 5Rs' values with many exceptional performances. Very  well done to all students for taking part and a particular congratulations to form groups 7RKD and 7CN, 8SHN, 9AHR and 9ECS and 10SLG who were winners on the day.

There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event, encouraged by Mr West's sing a long!  The students were really well behaved - as was the weather - and we look forward to making next year's event even bigger and better.

#ProudToBeRossett

We are running a summer competition across our Instagram and Facebook pages this year with the #ProudToBeRossett hashtag. We hope to see the Rossett ‘R’ in all sorts of weird and wonderful places and our favourite contribution will win a trophy and a prize in September. To enter the competition you can either post the image yourself, tag Rossett and use the hashtag #ProudToBeRossett in your entries or just email aotway@rossettschool.co.uk and Mr Otway will post it for you. We cannot wait to see what you come up with.

Sixth Form Listeners

On Wednesday, a group of Year 12 students successfully completed their Listeners Training. This training prepares students to work as Listeners and Mentors with our new Year 7 cohort in September. Students learnt about active listening, questioning, spotting signs of bullying, confidentiality, child protection and safeguarding. Students took part in a range of role play activities, honing their skills for the new academic year. Year 12 Listeners will be attached to each Year 7 form group and will be working with them throughout Year 7. Well done to all students involved.
