Rossett News Update - 21 April 2023
Rossett Heroes
Our Rossett Heroes this week are Ted Carey (Year 8), Joe Dixon (Year 10) and Dan Goulding (Year 11).
Ted was nominated as a hero by Miss Tolliday for ‘being a little ray of sunshine every morning. He sits by his bike and greets everyone who walks past him in an extremely positive and friendly way. It immediately cheers me up and everybody else too I’m sure!’ Ted, through your relentless positivity you are making Rossett a better place, you are a Rossett Hero!
Joe was nominated by Mr Bulmer because he was helping to clear away some of the dinner trays that students had left at the end of lunchtime, even though they had nothing to do with him. Joe we love to see our older students acting as role models and you are a deserving Rossett Hero!
Dan was nominated by Mr Bentley who said, ‘I’d like to nominate Dan Goulding. In the GCSE performance exams, he learned the accompaniment for a piano duet so that he could accompany multiple other students in their exams and rehearse with them at school in his spare time. This was on top of preparing for his own exam too.’ Dan, you really have gone above and beyond to selflessly help others, you are clearly a Rossett Hero!
To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.
Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.
"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams
Friday 5 Headteachers Awards
Well done to all of the students who received a Headteachers Award this week. These students have been nominated by members of staff for exemplifying Rossett School's 4Rs culture of learning. This week's winners are:
Charlotte Lewis (Year 7)
Julia Juszczyk (Year 8)
Barnes Walker (Year 9)
Joe Dixon (Year 10)
Eve McGee (Year 11)
Ashlyn Ngamaleu (Year 11)
Welcome back to Reuben and Fraser
We were delighted to welcome Reuben and Fraser back to lessons in school this week. Their return demonstrates how far they have come in their recovery and staff and students alike were absolutely delighted to see them back with us. Students were reminded in assemblies to be extra careful and considerate when moving around the building and we have been very impressed with their response.
Young Writers Competition
We are delighted to let you know that four of our students have winning entries in a writing competition that they entered at the end of last year. The students were tasked with creating a 100 word story that focussed around a number of their choice. The organisers 'Young Writers' have published the winning entries in a book and each of our four winners received their own copy to take home. Well done to: Edie Tomlin Gale (Year 9) , Solenne Olesqui (Year 9), and Olivia Penman (Year 10) and Alfie Andrews (Year 8) who are pictured below:
Guitar Workshop
Our guitar students attended a workshop with Connor Jordon from the band '53 Theives' this week. Connor has just returned from touring the USA with the band and came to Rossett to work with our guitarists for a masterclass and then spent time with our Year 13 music students ahead of their exam. Thank you, Connor for taking the time to visit our students.
LRC News from Mr Asker
I hope you all enjoyed a restful Easter. The cheering that you might have heard during the holiday was probably due to the announcement that the Harry Potter books are going to be made into a new TV series. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65258807
As with the recent and very successful release of the Hogwarts Legacy computer game we see again the enduring appeal of the Harry Potter books. These new TV adaptations are sure to take us all back to the original seven books and delight and amaze us again. Perhaps the only thing that could top this would be further books within the Wizarding World. Over to you J K Rowling!
Another adaptation of a famous book is the upcoming film release Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume. Blume’s novels have been translated into 32 languages and sold more than 90 million copies. She remains an incredibly important figure in children’s and young adult literature with her books remaining hugely popular with teenage girls in particular.
I hope you enjoy a bookish weekend when it comes.
Crown fit for a King!
This week in their Technology lessons, students have been encouraged to enter a local competition to design a Crown for the forthcoming King's Coronation. We were particularly impressed with this fabulous design by Claudia Asmussen (Year 8) who even turned her design into a very well-made and intricate model. Well done, Claudia! We will let you know if we have any competition winners and share some more designs next week.
Strike Action
All parents/carers received an email earlier this week with information about further teaching unions strike action days. We have re-evaluated our plans as we are now entering the fifth strike day and wish to provide a balance for different year groups attending school.

Acoustic Night is scheduled for next Thursday. This will be going ahead as planned. The music department will be in touch to share arrangements for rehearsals if students are working remotely on this day. We can also confirm the French and Spanish GCSE Oral exams will go ahead as planned on Thursday 27th April.
Headteacher Recruitment
Interviews for the future Headteacher of Rossett School are taking place next week, ready to appoint for a September start. This is an exciting time for the school, and we look forward to finding the right person to lead the school through its next phase of rapid improvement. We will update parents/carers as soon we have any news.
Mobile phone ban
In Mr Saunders letter to parents/carers at the start of this week he provided six weeks advance notice that we will be moving to a complete ban on mobile phone use in school after the May half term holiday. This will include student using mobile phones in lessons instead of iPads. Teachers will no longer allow students to use phones in this way. Students will be allowed to bring phones to school to allow them to travel safely to and from school, but phones must not be seen or heard during the school day. As with most schools, phones that are seen will be confiscated until the end of the day. Where students refuse to hand over their phone, more serious consequences will follow including isolation and suspension. We are taking this action to strengthen our safeguarding practices and reduce disruption to learning. More information about this to follow.
Year 11 Study Leave
Study leave for Year 11 will start on Monday 15 May. Therefore, the last day of timetabled lessons will be Friday 12 May. We have taken the decision to do this a week earlier than in previous years because of the number of large exams taking place in the last two weeks of term. More information to follow about the logistics of study leave.
