Rossett News Update - 19 May 2023

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Alfie Lumsden, Jacob Norton and Joe Dixon in Year 10, along with Freddie Symmonds and Thiago Coelho in Year 7.

  • Joe is our first double-Rossett Hero. Last Friday there was a very exciting, close football match taking place on the football pitches at breaktime and when the bell went there was a temptation to continue the match – I remember the feeling well from my own days at school! Ms Roberts nominated Joe because when she instructed everybody to finish the match to head to their lessons, one or two people continued but Joe picked up the ball when it came to him, gave the ball to Ms Roberts and said that it was time they went in. This isn’t an easy thing to do amongst peers and so for being kind, for doing the right thing and for being a role model that encourages others to do the right thing, Joe you are a deserving double Rossett Hero!
  • Alfie was nominated by Mrs Bowman because he was ‘kind and friendly, offering to work with our new classmate and helping him to learn Spanish pronunciation.’ Alfie, thank you for helping to make our school a welcoming place for a new student and for offering your time and assistance in Spanish – you are a Rossett Hero!
  • Jacob was nominated by Mr Fell because during one PE lesson this week there was a student in Jacob’s class who wasn’t as enthusiastic about the prospect of joining in the football session as Jacob and some of the other boys were. Jacob – without being asked – went out of his way to invite the student onto his team, to make him feel welcome and then spent the rest of the lesson encouraging and helping the student to play the game. Jacob, for being kind and for showing such excellent leadership qualities – you are a Rossett Hero!
  • Freddie and Thiago were nominated by another student who has just arrived at the school with very little English. Both Freddie and Thiago were nominated because they’ve really helped this student to settle in, going out of their way to make our new student to feel welcome, to explain things and to make significant effort to help him to settle in. Boys, this is absolutely wonderful to hear and thank you for making Rossett a welcoming place!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

This will start at 5.15pm. To join, students  need to accept the Teams invite which will be sent to all Year 11 students. This will be a lively and engaging session including plot details, key themes and crucially how to answer an exam question for An Inspector Calls, Power & Conflict Poetry and Unseen Poetry.

We will provide similar sessions before each of the English Language exams which we will keep you informed about.

Attendance Reminder

We would like to remind you that parent/carers must notify the school on the first day of an unplanned absence by 8:30am or as soon as practically possible on our absence line number below:

Absence line: 01423 564 444 option 1

In addition, please be aware that attending a medical or dental appointment will be counted as authorised as long as the child's parent/carer notifies the school in advance of the appointment.  For planned absences, parents/carers must contact their child’s Support Officer in the first instance.

However, we urge parents/carers to make medical and dental appointments out of school hours where possible. Where this is not possible, the pupil should be out of school for the minimum amount of time necessary.  Please refer to our full absence policy here for further guidance.

Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ) Presentations

Today, over 40 Year 12 EPQ students presented academic posters as part of their extended research projects.  Students have completed a range of projects from how AI such as 'ChatGPT' affects copyright law, to whether working conditions in the modelling industry have improved over the last 20 years. Some students have also created artefacts from writing a novella to building a soapbox race car.  It was wonderful to see all of the fantastic work produced by out students.  Thank you to the staff who coordinated the projects.

Garden renaisanceRossett Garden Renaissance - Can you Help?

Rossett School is fortunate to have a fabulous multi award-winning garden. It is now ripe for a renaissance after the last couple of years of lying dormant and our budding green fingered gardeners are excited to reinvigorate our garden in this our Golden Anniversary year.

A team of students are working with Mrs Hughes on filling the space with vegetables, flowers and shrubs and crucially encouraging wildlife to thrive so the school community can enjoy this magical garden once again. We will be fundraising in school and we have received some kind donations from our community already. We're now appealing for your help in donating all things garden-related to support, inspire and enhance our project. What are we looking for? From rakes to roses, pots to peonies, whether it’s gathering cobwebs in your shed, or you bought one plant too many; we’d love you to think of us and donate to our wonderful garden.

Your donations can be delivered to reception; anything garden-related will be gratefully received. Watch this space for pictures of our blossoming golden garden!

The theif lordLRC News from Mr Asker

I am afraid I missed The Eurovision Song Contest last week as I’ve never watched it again since 1981.  Bucks Fizz, Making Your Mind Up.  Perfection and can’t be improved upon.  Ever.

However live from Rossett LRC HQ this week we bring you Eurovision “Children and Young peoples” book contest.  Unfortunately space prevents every European country getting a mention however here we go:

Representing France we have the 'Nicholas' Books by Rene Goscinny.  Fantastic and humorous short stories that are laugh out loud funny.  Switzerland’s entry is 'Heidi' by Johanna Spyri. One of the best selling books of all time about the life of a girl and her grandfather in the Alps. This time round Germany brings us 'The Thief Lord' by Cornelia Funke. One of the more modern entries from 2002 it was made into a film in 2006. Ambling gently on to the stage now are one of Finland’s best ever exports, The Moomin books by Tove JansonThese are hugely loved characters adored by millions around the world. Italy would hate to be left out so they are entertaining us with 'Pinocchio' by Carlo Collodi.  The recent animated film Version by Guillermo del Toro is stunning. Finally and for older students we have Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes.  Considered to be one of the founding books of Western literature it richly deserves its place here tonight.

So after a rigorous counting process I can confirm that we have six joint winners but your host apparently has been awarded nil points.

Enjoy a weekend of European or any reading.

Mr Asker

Uniform Appeal from PTA

As our current Year 11 have recently started their study leave we would appreciate any donations of unwanted school uniform for the PTA shop. We accept Rossett School logo uniform including ties, blazers and PE kit. These donated items are cleaned and offered again to those who need uniform for a growing child or children.

Please send your preloved uniform to school reception to allow us to find it a new home.  If you would like to join the PTA or find out more information please email aphelps@rossettschool.co.uk

Many Thanks

The PTA committee.

Return of the Rossett 'Messengers'

The Rossett messenger is a long-standing tradition at Rossett that sadly had to be withdrawn through the Covid pandemic.  We have been delighted to re-introduce our Year 8 messengers over the last few weeks.  Messengers are used on a rota basis and give one period of their time to act as a messenger around school.  The students gain confidence and develop their responsibility skills helping staff in this way.  Students who have already taken part (below) have said how much they enjoyed their role.
