Rossett News Update - 16 June 2023

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Alexander Dall in Year 8, along with Ollie Robinson, Grace Owen, Olivia Smith, Mollie Coxon, Georgie Wood, Joe Dixon, Jacob Norton and Harry Galton in Year 10.

Harry, Jacob, Joe, Georgie, Mollie, Olivia and Grace were nominated by the PE department because of their actions last Saturday as part of a transition event, introducing our next Year 7 cohort to the school. Mr O’Sullivan wrote that, ‘The day was a great success, partly due to the weather but mostly down to the superb dedication, enthusiasm and leadership of our Year 10 Sports Leaders. All seven of the students gave up their Saturday to not only support Team PE but to also be the approachable and kind role models that we know them to be. Each and every one of them represented Rossett brilliantly in front of the new students and their parents. Without our Sports Leaders, days like that just would not be possible.’ We are incredibly grateful for your efforts guys, and rumour has it you even helped to look after Mr O’Sullivan’s son too! What a wonderful set of selfless people, we are all really proud of you!

Ollie Robinson was nominated by Mrs Phelps who witnessed an incident on her journey to work in which a member of the public had sadly collapsed at a bus stop. From her car, Mrs Phelps saw Ollie cross the road to go and see if he could offer any assistance to the adults who were already at the scene. This is the sort of behaviour we love to see from our students, especially when they are outside of school in their uniform. Ollie, for being an outstanding ambassador for Rossett in our community, you are a Rossett Hero!

Alexander Dall was nominated by Mr Bulmer for being, ‘a really polite young man who opens doors for you and asks how you are doing and how your day is going. I witnessed Alexander asking a number of members of staff how they are.’ Alexander, for clearly demonstrating one of our core values of respect and for simply being a nice person, you are a deserving Rossett Hero!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Headteachers AwardHeadteacher Friday 5 Awards

Well done to all of the students who received a Headteachers Award this week.  These students have been nominated by members of staff  and the Headteacher for exemplifying Rossett School's 4Rs culture of  learning.  This week's winners are:

Yngrid Espinal (Year 7)                      Jon Davison (Year 8)

Junior Mandizha (Year 8)                  Phillip Godley (Year 9)

Zoe Cooper (Year 8)                          Ruby Smith (Year 10)

New Sixth Form Leadership Team Appointed

Rossett students have elected a new Sixth Form Leadership Team after a very close-run race.  Sixth Form students canvassed votes across Year 12, took part in hustings and produced a campaign video with their election pledges.  The following students were elected after student and staff votes were counted:

Head Boy:  Tristan Holdsworth                                                               Head Girl:  Eva Bailey

Deputy Head Boy: Patrick Fleming                                                        Deputy Head Girl:  Leila Buono

In taking up these important roles the students will gain valuable leadership, teamwork, public speaking and organisational skills; they will be a key link between students and staff and will be involved in a wide range of development opportunities.  Their first assignment is to plan and deliver the final Sixth Form Interform competition of the year - congratulations and good luck to them in their endeavours.

Year 6 Transition Event

On Saturday 10th June, we welcomed current Year 6 students, who will be joining Rossett School in September 2023, for a fun mini-sports transition event. The weather was fantastic and the students had a fabulous time getting to know lots of their new class mates. They took  part in a range of sports activities organised by our sports faculty and supported by our Sports Leaders from Year 10. Our Sports Leaders did an excellent job  looking after the students, who were organised into  teams. The teams then got to play football, rounders, volleyball, dodgeball and retro sports.

Our catering team served refreshments to the families and siblings who had come along to support, and pizza and chips was provided to the participants at lunchtime. It was a fun-packed, busy day and at the end of the event, the students went home (probably tired!)  with a Rossett water bottle and bag as a memento for their participation.

We look forward to meeting them again on the Induction Days in July.

American Exchange 2023

Our visiting students from Maine, USA have continued their exchange in more glorious Yorkshire weather this week.  The students enjoyed visiting many of our local tourist attractions with their host families and Rossett staff including, Harewood House, Knaresborough and Whitby - to name but a few!    They also took part in some fun, teambuilding activities at our Sports Centre last weekend.

The students  had the opportunity to experience lessons in school today and followed a special timetable which included Science, Drama and Maths lessons to get a taste for school life in the UK. The visit concludes on Monday evening with a 'Pot Luck Dinner' before we wish them 'bon voyage' for their journey back to America and their families.

UCAS and Apprenticeship Events for Year 12

On Thursday this week, 70 Year 12 students attended the UCAS Discovery Event at Leeds Beckett University. Students attended an exhibitor fair, which included 121 universities, alongside employers, apprenticeship providers and the armed forces. Students also visited a number of seminars on specific areas, from 'How to make your application stand out' to 'Understanding student finance', to specific subjects, including Law, History, Physiotherapy, Engineering and Sport Management.

In addition, Year 12 students had an assembly and Period 1 with a guest speaker from Ask Apprenticeships today. Students learnt about what apprenticeships are and what they involve, how they differ from degree apprenticeships, the expectations of employers and got an insight into a range of different apprenticeship sectors.

Each week this half term, Year 12 students are covering different areas of Post -18 progression as part of the form time programme.  Personal Development lessons are covering areas including UCAS applications, writing personal statements and searching for university and apprenticeship opportunities via Unifrog. In addition, week commencing 10th July, Year 12 students will be completing their work experience placements.
