Winter Warmer Concert

Last night we were delighted to welcome parents and carers to our fabulous celebration of Rossett students musical talent.  Amongst the performances was stunning vocal solos from KS4 students Mille Smith, Sofiah Clayton and Fred Leonard-Coules and two Year 7 students, Lily Curance and Maddie Blake who sang ABBA's 'Thank you for the Music'.

Our extra-curricular ensembles were also out in full force with great performances including Rosset concert band conducted by Year 13 student, Patrick Fleming.  The evening drew to a close with a massed group performance of 'Last Christmas' involving the Year 10 GCSE Music students supported by the Year 7 choir.  It was a really fantastic evening and enjoyed by all.  Thank you to Mr Durbin for his time preparing for the event and all who performed and attended.

Careers Fair

On Wednesday we held our inaugural Careers Fair for all students. Throughout the morning each year group attended the event, and  students were able to meet over 35 different businesses and further and higher education providers. We are so grateful to all of the organisations that contributed to our Careers Fair and can't thank them enough for spending this time with our students.

The event was buzzing and our students engaged fully with the visiting organisations - the students really enjoyed having the opportunity to speak to so many different people and said:

'I have learned that there are so many careers to choose from and so many options.'

'I have learned that I would definitely like to attend university and potentially go for a Law degree after speaking to universities.'

'I now want to do jobs I didn’t even think about before.'

'I learned the qualifications you will need for jobs and universities. I know a lot more than I did before the fair.'

'I have learned that there is a broad range of jobs in the UK. It opened my mind to new areas of work other than the one I was thinking about.'

We also received very positive feedback from the employers and providers, who said that they were very impressed with how our students engaged with them by asking lots of questions, being polite and showing a lot of interest.

We asked all of the students to complete an engagement form as they visited the different stalls and engaged with employers and providers. If they did this well, then the employer/provider signed their form. All students who completed their form fully were entered into a prize draw for a £20 Amazon voucher.  The winning student is Igwe Ogba in Year 10.

Christmas Jumper Day

It was lovely to see our students enjoy the build-up to Christmas today and contribute to our fundraising by wearing their Christmas jumpers.  Thank you to everyone who donated and to Mrs Normand who provided the picture of students from her form group.

Red Kite Youth Board

Red Kite Learning Trust is keen to learn from our young people, to give them a voice and an opportunity to help shape the future of our Trust and schools. Last year our Trust set up a Red Kite Youth Board, with pupil representatives from each of our 14 schools. The Red Kite Youth Board met up for the fifth time this term and you can read all about what was discussed and achieved in this meeting here. Our next Red Kite Youth Board meeting will be on Monday 15th January and our Youth Board reps would love to hear about any ideas and initiatives pupils in our schools would like to share.

Cambridge UniSTEM SMART Success at Cambridge University

We are delighted to let you know that Eva Bailey (Year 13)  has achieved a Silver Certificate in the STEM SMART Programme hosted by Cambridge University.  To gain the certificate students needed to engage with all 34 weeks of the specially designed programme which involved weekly extra questions which develop problem solving techniques which go beyond the requirements of A level, as well as supporting their learning within the syllabus for Maths and Science.  Students also attend weekly online tutorials in each subject and have also completed written solutions for marking by Cambridge supervisors.  This is a fantastic achievement for Eva who will go on to complete Phase 3 of the programme in the New Year.

American Exchange 2024/25

There are a limited number of places still remaining for the American Exchange 2024-5 for students currently in Year 8 and Year 9.  Students will be travelling to Falmouth, Maine in October 2024 and hosting an American student in April 2025.  If your child would be interested, please email ElcockT@rs.rklt.co.uk for more information.

wolf wilderLRC News from Mr Asker

With Christmas just around the corner here are some recommended reads with a Christmas and/or winter theme:

  • 'The Dark is Rising' by Susan Cooper. Good fights evil in the days leading up to Christmas. This modern classic was made into a radio adaptation last year and is well worth a listen.
  • 'The Wolf Wilder' by Katherine Rundell. A tale of adventure, revolution, snowy woods and, of course, wolves.
  • 'Northern Lights' by Phillip Pullman. Lyra and her daemon head to the frozen north and meet fighting polar bears.
  • Finally, 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens.  Scrooge, ghosts, foggy streets and Tiny Tim.  This has been adapted as a film and for television so many times. The best version is of course 'The Muppet Christmas Carol', which is Michael Caine's best work ever but another brilliant and, arguably, more serious version is Mark Gatiss’s stage version which was filmed and is available on the iPlayer.

Have a merry and bookish Christmas everyone.

Thank you for your donations!

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Ukraine appeal this year.  With the help of our student First Aid group  we loaded a trailer full of brilliant essentials to be shipped to Ukraine shortly.  We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to help with this fantastic cause and thank you to Ms Rogers for organising on the school's behalf.
