Rossett News Update - 14 July 2023
Rossett Heroes Staff Special
Over the last seven days we have been overwhelmed at the sheer volume of nominations that have flooded in from students and parents who wanted to express their gratitude to the staff at Rossett for being Rossett Heroes. It is impossible to choose just a handful, so instead we sent the Year 8 messenger with print-outs of the nominations to hand to the nominees and invited them to all to come for a photograph in the LRC at break time. Unfortunately, some of the teachers were on duty at break or not in school on Thursday but as you can see from the photograph, this didn’t stop the inventive Mr West – see if you can spot him.
There was just one nomination that we wanted to share as we think it speaks volumes about why Rossett is special and illustrates the bond between all members of the Rossett community; from students to teachers to the wider staff body. It comes from Chloe Blackburn in Year 8 who wrote:
I’d love to nominate all the cleaning and maintenance staff because they work behind the scenes before, during and after school every day in order to make sure our school stays clean and tidy and is a safe learning environment for all. They deserve so much credit for all of their incredible hard work and for the kindness they show, not only to the school building, but to all of the students who are within it! They honestly go above and beyond 110% of the time and we cannot thank them enough!
Chloe wasn’t the only person to nominate the support team we have at Rossett. We are lucky to have so many appreciative, kind and thoughtful students.
Thank you to all parents, students and teachers who have made nominations this year, it has truly been a joy to read through them all.
Next week is our last Rossett Heroes of the year, so please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.
"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

More Exceptional Learners
Three more students have completed a full set of Exceptional Learner Tokens as we head towards the end of this academic year. Annabel Oxley (Year 8), Lily McIntosh (Year 8) and Megan Horner (Year 7) have been awarded exceptional learner tokens in every subject they study along with the coveted Reflective, Resilient, Respect, Responsible and Headteacher's awards.
Mr Milburn met with all three students this afternoon to congratulate them on this outstanding achievement and the students were also presented with a limited-edition Gold Rossett pin badge. The students are also entered into the Exceptional Learner Lottery and have the chance to win some fantastic prizes including a Nintendo Switch Lite, a lunch pass for a month and £50 of Amazon vouchers. We look forward to letting you know the winners of these fantastic prizes at the end of term.
Year 6 Transition Days
We were delighted to welcome our new September 2023 cohort to Rossett School on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Our fun and informative transition days included taster lessons in English, History, Geography, Art and Drama. The pupils met their Form Tutor and pastoral staff as well as enjoying the delights of our catering teams expertise at lunchtime in the dedicated Year 7 dining hall.
Those students travelling to Rossett by bus also had the opportunity to try the experience out over the two transition days. All of these opportunities to experience life at Rossett were designed to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school in September. The two days culminated in a Showcase where the students performed their new found skills.
Parents also had the opportunity to attend our Information Evening on Wednesday evening, meeting our Senior Leadership Team, looking at uniform requirements , finding out further details about the iPad scheme and reviewing final bus requirements with our staff.
Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards
This week saw the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh qualifier expeditions take place. Both groups showed grit and determination to complete their routes in mixed weather- stormy one-minute, glorious sunshine the next. Highlights for the Bronze students included an improvised game of cricket at the campsite and treats from "Sophie's corner shop" in Hampsthwaite upon their return to Harrogate. We are very proud of their resilience and looking forward to next year already!
Class Currency Rewards Trip
Over recent months we have been running a 'Class Currency' form group competition and today the overall winning form group visited the cinema to watch the newly released 'Mission Impossible'. Mrs Hughes' winning form group joined forces to collect the most amount of Exceptional Learner tokens and in addition the winning form from each year group get to enjoy an off-timetable lesson with 'Zorbing' fun and treats on Monday. Well done to all of our exceptional learners!
Hospitality and Catering Students visit Rudding Park
Our Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students were lucky enough to visit Rudding Park Hotel this week. The students were given a guided tour of the hotel and grounds, including the busy working kitchens, to gain an insight into what the hospitality industry looks like behind the scenes.
The group then attended a careers talk hosted by the hotels Food and Beverage Manager, Head of PR and a Rudding apprentice who has just finished an apprenticeship scheme at the hotel and gave some excellent, honest advice about this potential career pathway. The students represented the school extremely well; they were engaged, asked lots of interesting questions and were very polite to everyone they interacted with.

Following our KS3 Assessment Week the following students qualified to represent their form on the day (all other qualifiers will be notified by their Form Tutor):
All students should come to school in their Rossett PE kit on the day. We strongly advise students to bring water and their Rossett PE hoody as there is a small chance of rain on the day. Ice lollies and water will be on sale during Period 5 for 50p each.

Flamingo Land - Final Reminder for Consent
Radio York Visits Rossett
On Monday we welcomed Julia Lewis from Radio York to our 4G once again - this time to talk about the Women's World Cup which starts on 20th July in Australia and New Zealand. As you are no doubt aware, Rossett alumni Rachel Daly is an important part of the women's squad and students at Rossett discussed how inspiring this is in their own quest to become successful in football. We wish the team well and all at Rossett will be supporting Rachel from afar.
The Red Kite Alliance RED Award
Rossett School has started the journey to achieve the RED Award!
The Red Kite Alliance RED Award has been developed to support schools to review, strengthen and celebrate their provision in terms of equality, diversity, respect for individuals and community cohesion. Engagement with the award signals a clear commitment to place this agenda at the heart of the life and work of the school. The award is underpinned by the values of the Red Kite Alliance, which include “Equality of opportunity for all young people and the staff who work in our schools” as well as “The unique nature of each school and its place within its own community”.
We are looking forward to appointment new Respect Student Ambassadors who will work alongside staff to achieve the award! If your child is interested in becoming a Respect Ambassador, please ask them to see Mrs Bulmer nbulmer@rossettschool.co.uk.
