American Exchange
We were delighted last Friday to welcome staff and students from Falmouth Middle School for the UK leg of the 2023-4 American Exchange. In their first week they’ve packed in plenty of trips, travelling to Harrogate, Knaresborough, Leeds, Harewood and Beamish museum; then on Wednesday their Rossett exchange partners accompanied them on a day out in Whitby, complete with fish and chips by the seaside! Their wonderful host families have also laid on a host of fantastic activities, providing them with an unforgettable taste of life in the UK.
Places are still available for the 2024-5 American exchange for current Year 8 and 9 students. Please email ElcockT@rs.rklt.co.uk for more details.
Acoustic Night
We are delighted to invite you to our ever-popular 'Acoustic Night' which takes place on Thursday 25th April. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear 'unplugged' performances from our talented students. Tickets cost £4 and are available from Monday on Scopay. Doors open at 6.30pm and the performance will start at 6.45pm.
LRC News from Mr Asker
The LRC was distinctly chilly Monday morning when we returned for the start of term. However, things warmed up quickly and the LRC was full at break, lunchtime and the drop box was soon overflowing with books returned having clearly been enjoyed over the holidays alongside lots of chocolate I’m sure.
As I have written before one of the (many) joys of this job is simply talking to students about what they have enjoyed reading and I am regularly given recommendations and plenty of encouragement (there is nothing more intimidating than a young reader who has discovered the book for them!) to buy and stock certain books and authors. One name that kept coming up was the author Colleen Hoover and after the fifth or sixth recommendation I felt it was overdue (good library word there!) to order some of her books which will be arriving early next week, bookish fingers crossed. Also on order is the most recent Robin Stevens novel as she continues her excellent book series The Ministry of Unladylike Activity with a new title called The Body in the Blitz.
We have several Lockwood and Co fans in school by the wonderful Jonathan Stroud and these books are always being borrowed and we also now have on order the first two books from his Scarlett and Browne series which are stunning apparently. Another new book that is due to arrive next week is, perhaps the one that I am most excited about. James by Percival Everett will suit our older students. It is a re-imagining of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and is written from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. It has received fantastic reviews and please click here if you would like to read more about it. Percival Everett: Why I rewrote Huckleberry Finn to give slave Jim a voice - BBC News
A busy and very positive week and it is great to be back welcoming all students and staff into the LRC. Happy reading everyone.
New Extra-Curricular PE timetable
We have included below the updated Sports Studies Extra-curricular programme for Summer 2024. This will be incorporated into our whole school Extra-Curricular timetable and sent out next week. There are lots of new sporting activities such as cheerleading, fitness, tennis and athletics. It is important that all students register their attendance when participating in an extra curricular activity via the QR codes available in school.
First Aid Course
On Thursday18th April, Ms Rogers (First Aid and Health Manager) will be launching our first aid course as part of the extra curricular timetable. The course is for students aged between 11-16 and will cover all of the relevant subjects required for guides, scouts and other organisations first aid badges. It is also helpful for babysitting, DofE and is also the basis for our very own first aid team. The course can be taken and assessed at levels 1-3, so every student can achieve a qualification.
The course will run most Thursday evenings straight after school in P11 or DW4 for the practical sessions, finishing at 4.25pm in time for the late bus.
No previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and commitment to learning. Students must be available to start the course on the 18th or 25th of April. It will be a very intensive but fun course as there are 28 subjects to cover before the summer break! If your child would like to join us, or would like to know more, please encourage them to call into first aid and have a chat with Ms Rogers.
