Rossett News Update - 12 May 2023

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Hugo Perez in Year 12, Soufi Kebe in Year 10  (who has had a great week as he was also nominated for a Friday 5 Award!) and Oscar Jackson with Emma Rogers in Year 8.

Hugo has been nominated by Ms Murray for his outstanding work over the weekend helping the community during the Coronation celebrations. Ms Murray spotted him in Valley Gardens demonstrating his ‘incredibly advanced First Aid skills including how to administer an Epi-Pen, how to give CPR to an unresponsive casualty and how to use an AED to restart a heart. Hugo was incredibly knowledgeable and articulate, he presented over eighty demonstrations and represented the school admirably.’ Hugo, what an excellent role model you are, thank you for making our community a safer place – you are a Rossett Hero!

Starting a new school can be daunting and last week Ms Nathan-Geary welcomed a new member of the Rossett community who was lucky to find that he was in Soufi’s form. Ms Nathan-Geary has nominated Soufi because he volunteered to take our new student to his first class, collected him from other lessons so he knew where he was going, sat to eat lunch with him and generally just did everything he could to make our new student feel welcome. Soufi, thank you for making Rossett a more welcoming place – you are a Rossett Hero.

Oscar has been nominated by an astonishing five students, at least two of whom have been Rossett Heroes themselves in the past. Oscar was nominated by his fellow students for ‘always helping out and being kind to his classmates.’ Another student noted that, ‘I have seen him helping others and being extremely kind and supportive.’ Oscar it is clear that Rossett is a better place because you are part of it and you are a Rossett Hero!

Emma has been nominated by a friend who said, ‘Emma has been so kind to me lately as I have not been having the best time and she has been helping me through it, just being there when I needed someone to talk to.’ Emma, this is the sort of kindness that makes the world go around. Thank you for being there for a classmate in need – you are a Rossett Hero!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

  • Lauren Gray (Year 8)
  • Thomas Northwood (Year 9)
  • Soufi Kebe (Year 10)

Farewell to our class of 2023!

We had a wonderful day celebrating the end of Year 11 with our fabulous students today who enjoyed a 'leaver's lunch' in the Main Hall which was accompanied by a slideshow of their time at Rossett.  They also had the opportunity to sign shirts - which I am sure they will keep as a memento!    The year group then attended a celebration assembly in the Sports Hall with awards handed out by Mr Royles.  Everyone involved was impressed with their impeccable behaviour and we very much enjoyed celebrating this milestone with them.  We wish them all well for their forthcoming exams and look forward to seeing them again on results day on Thursday 24th August.

Graduation Ceremony for Year 13 students

Last night our ‘Class of 2023’ Year 13 students graduated from Rossett School Sixth Form. The Graduation ceremony was a formal celebration of our students’ achievements at Rossett School. The evening was opened with speeches from the Headteacher Designate, Mr Milburn, and Head of Sixth Form, Mr Keyworth. This was followed by the formal graduation ceremony where all students received their graduation certificates.

Awards were handed out from each faculty, along with the highly coveted Rossett Sixth Form ‘Achievement Award’ which was won by Dylan Heywood, and the Rossett Sixth Form Community Award, which was won by Pinky Kornlup. Fantastic musical performances and the committee awards preceded a keynote speech by Rossett Sixth Form Head Boy alumni, James Porter. The Harrogate and District Soroptimists, with whom a strong partnership has been established with Rossett Sixth Form, also took to the stage to draw the winning raffle tickets, with £240 being raised on the evening, which is enough to purchase a full block of toilets for a village in a third world country as part of the Toilet Twinning Project. Congratulations to everyone involved - we wish you well in your exams and look forward to hearing of your successes on results day.    We have included a small selection of photographs taken on the evening however, Miss Higgins will be sending a link to all students next week so that they can view all of the pictures.

Examination Support for Students

Compass Phoenix have provided a useful leaflet for students currently studying for the GCSE examinations.   For some students this time of year can be very stressful and, as well as reminding students about some wellbeing tips they provide an anonymous text service 'BUZZ US' which students aged between 11-18 can contact.  They aim to provide advice, resources and signposting for students, for a variety of mental health and wellbeing topics.  They can be contacted on 07520 631168, alternatively click here for their information flyer.

Milestone bookstoreLRC News from Mr Asker

A polite reminder to Year 7 parents/carers that it is time for students to submit their money for the sponsored read that students are taking part in.  The link for parents to use can be found here https://readathon.my.salesforce-sites.com/sponsor/R4G_SponsorPupilFindSchool1

This is a fantastic cause and anything you can do to help will make a real difference by encouraging a love of reading but also raising money to provide books and storytellers for children in hospitals across the UK.

My reading hero of the week is self-styled poet Jiang Libo who has spent the past three years paying for and building Milestone Bookstore in a remote village on top of a mountain in eastern China.  The book shop has 7,000 books and he is keen to encourage people from the village to enjoy reading and also create a space for children to read literature and study.  Up until now the nearest town with a bookshop was 30 km away. He appears undaunted by the book shops remoteness and small number of local customers saying: “people who really love books will come no matter where the bookstore is.”

He is of course right and I applaud his commitment and determination to encourage more people to read.  Having to climb to the top floor of a bookshop doesn’t seem such a hardship anymore.

Have a bookish weekend everyone.

Mr Asker

Update on 20mph campaign and workshop invitation

An opportunity for you to come and show support for active travel and road safety improvements around our schools and give your ideas to North Yorkshire Council (NYC)’s Highways Team.

In November, we submitted an application to NYC for a 20mph Pannal Ash School Zone with supporting infrastructure (such as additional crossings).  890+ local people signed our petition asking for these improvements. The application was also supported by headteachers of the five schools, by the Red Kite Alliance & by local councillors. Its aim is to make our streets safer for everyone, but particularly for children getting to school and sports clubs.

We have met several times with NYC’s Highways Manager to discuss the detail of the application and possible means for its implementation. You may have noticed one small improvement which has come as a result of this, in the re-installation of flashing 20mph signs on Pannal Ash Road. Funding for works is, of course, always tight. Since the decision to scrap the further phases of the Otley Road Cycle Way, however, a pot of money has become available that could help fund the 20mph zone plus supporting infrastructure, and which has to be spent on sustainable transport options for the area around the Otley Rd.

Our fantastic Local Residents Association (HAPARA) are running a workshop with the NYC Area Manager for Highways, to give locals a chance to influence the way this money is spent. Of course, we (from Safe Pannal Ash Zone) will be going along to discuss ideas put forward in our application, but anyone with an interest can also attend. It would be good to have a positive local presence, to help demonstrate to NYC that local people want to be able to safely walk, cycle or scoot in our area. Please see invitation below. If you can attend please email HAPARA on info@hapara.org. If you cannot, but want us to say anything in particular on your behalf, please email SafePAZforall@gmail.com. Thanks!
