Rossett News Update - 11 March 2022

Patrick and Eva Maths Challenge 2022Intermediate Maths Challenge Results

Our fantastic students have, once again, achieved an excellent set of results in the Intermediate Maths Challenge organised by the UKMT. Over 72% of students who took part were awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold Certificate.

Only 1500 of the best students across the UK are invited to follow-on rounds and  seven students from Rossett School  have achieved this incredible feat.

We wish Patrick Fleming good luck in the Maclaurin Olympiad; Eva Bailey, Yael Braunstein, Nadia Othman and Matthew Gregson in the Pink Kangaroo round and Matan Braunstein and Joe Alderson in the Grey Kangaroo round.

Disasters emergency committeeEvents in Ukraine

I am sure  we are united in our concern for the people of Ukraine as we watch the escalation of  the conflict  and the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. As a school we are supporting those of our students and their families who have been directly impacted by these recent events and will continue to do so as the situation develops.

While there are very many worthwhile local collection points for practical donations which I am sure many of you would like to support, we have  been advised that one of the best ways to help those most in need is by donating to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).   The DEC brings together  fifteen leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently having an immediate impact getting aid to people who most need it, fast.  We have included the link to their fundraising page here if you feel you would like to or are are able to support.

red-nose-dayComic Relief: Red Nose Day 2022

On Friday 18 March Rossett School is, once again, supporting the national 'Red Nose Day' event.  Red Nose Day raises funds to end child poverty throughout the world.  The organisation funds programmes which help keep children safe and healthy providing them with support and education.  The focus of the campaign this year is 'people' and how each one of us can 'do our bit'.

At Rossett, students will have the option to wear non-uniform on this day - or simply wear a 'red nose' to show their support.  If your child would like to wear non-uniform there is a suggested donation of £2 (payable via your child's Scopay account or directly to their Form Tutor). This way students across all year groups can show their support for this fantastic charity.

Sixth Form Poster March 2022Reminder: Sixth Form Information Evening: Monday 14 March 2022, 6.00pm-8.00pm

We would like to remind parents/carers  of  Year 11 students that they are  invited to visit our Sixth Form, in person, on Monday 14th March 2022.

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our teaching and pastoral staff and to learn more about the extensive opportunities available to our Sixth Form students. The event takes place in our Sixth Form Centre between 6.00pm and 8.00pm.

The evening will include talks from Ms Woodcock  (Headteacher), Mr Royles (Deputy Headteacher) and Mr Keyworth (Head of Sixth Form), along with providing the opportunity for you to speak to senior subject staff from each faculty. Sixth Form Ambassadors will also be available during the evening, and parents and students are encouraged to speak to our current students about their learning here at Rossett.

The evening is a chance to see what makes Rossett Sixth Form so successful -  from our progression and results' data, to the high expectations of students, our broad and balanced curriculum offer; and our facilities -  to the individualised support provided to students and our wide-ranging offers of advice, careers guidance, employability skills and our personal development programme will be part of the presentation.

If you have not yet registered for this event please click here to book a place (if you have already registered, you do not need to do so again).

Extra-Curricular Clubs: Update

Since September, staff at Rossett have been ensuring that  our students  are receiving all the academic help and support required to improve in their learning. However, equally  important for good mental health, enjoyment and to the quality of education at Rossett is the provision of extra-curricular clubs and enrichment activities.

MFL ClubWe are pleased to announce that we are now returning to pre-pandemic levels of opportunities  - particularly in terms of reading events and sports' clubs. Please click here for most up-to-date summary of lunchtime and after-school provision that we are currently offering. More generally, we are working to re-instate our renowned programme of local and international trips and visits over this and the next academic year, so please do listen out carefully for any updates as and when they arrive. As ever, at Rossett, student voice is incredibly important; should your child have any recommendations or requests, please do prompt them to get in touch with their form tutor, class teacher or Director of Learning and we will be more than happy to listen to suggestions for new provision.

All students are being challenged to attend at least one extra-curricular opportunity on a regular basis this half-term. In this spirit, why not encourage your child to consider the latest addition: ‘Y7 Languages and Cultures Club’ which takes place on Wednesday early lunch each week. They could even delve into our wealth of excellent reading resources and attend the lunchtime ‘Reading for Pleasure Club’ which takes place in the LRC every lunch both early and late lunch; Mr Asker awaits with hundreds, if not thousands of recommendations ready to go!

Musical notesAcoustic Night

The event, which will take place in the Main Hall, will showcase some of our fantastic individual talent alongside some of our regular extracurricular music ensembles. After the success of our Winter Warmer, we are thrilled to be able to put on another of our favourite live music events and will look forward to seeing you there. Tickets are available via SCOPAY only and are priced £4 for adults and £2 concessions (under 18 and seniors).

Covid-19 Guidance

We would like to remind you of our current Covid-19 guidance. We continue to promote good hygiene and adequate ventilation in school;

  • Anyone showing the main symptoms of COViD-19 should order a PCR test (https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test) and stay at home until they have a conclusive test result.
  • Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should stay at home for a minimum of 5 days, testing from day 5 until they have two consecutive negative test results.
  • Students can return to school on day 6, if they have had negative test results (on days 5 and 6) and they are not registering a high temperature.
  • A positive test on either day 5 or 6 and a high temperature means that students should remain at home until two consecutive tests show negative up to Day 10. Students can return to school after Day 10 even if they are still testing positive. A reminder of the symptoms to look out for:

The main symptoms of COVID-19 are still a recent onset of any of the following:

  • a new continuous cough
  • a high temperature
  • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) National guidance and local Public Health advice asks parents to consider any ‘cold or flulike’ symptoms as a reason to book out a test.

Please note: Children and young people who usually attend an education or childcare setting and who live with someone who has COVID-19 should continue to attend the setting as normal.
