Rossett News Update - 10 March 2023
School Closed due to Weather Conditions
Thank you for your understanding this morning following our decision to close the school due to the adverse weather conditions experienced across the county. The safety of our students and staff is our prime concern and as it became clear that travelling conditions were treacherous we took the difficult decision to close the school.
We were pleased to replace face-to-face learning with remote assignments wherever possible to minimise disruption for our students.
Rossett Heroes
Our heroes for this week are Sports' Leaders Angharad Grabham, Katie Harland, Daisy Bielby, Lucy Hernon, Jess McLaughlin and Davina Bhogal. These dedicated Year 10 students gave up their time on Monday to help Miss Mooney to host an U13 Netball Tournament for all Harrogate and Craven Schools despite hail, sleet and freezing temperatures.
During the tournament the girls helped to coach two Rossett Year 8 teams, made substitutions, shouted encouragement from the side-lines, gave team talks and worked on administration to record the results from across the tournament. A teacher from one of our neighbouring schools commented that she felt that Rossett produces some of the best Sports Leaders – we agree! It is wonderful to be able to celebrate six amazing young women from the Rossett family in the same week as International Women’s Day.
Year 11 Mock Examinations: Monday 13 March - Friday 17 March
This week students in Year 11 had an assembly providing further guidance and advice about their forthcoming mock examinations. The assessments next week should be viewed as an opportunity to practise for the examinations taking place in May and June.
NEU Strike Action: Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 March
You will be aware that the National Education Union (NEU) is planning further national strike action on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 March 2023. This is due to a dispute with the government, not with the school. As a Leadership Team, we have decided that Year 8, 11, 12 & 13 will be in school and Year 7, 9, and 10 will be working remotely. I would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and hope that the industrial action is resolved quickly preventing the need for further action planned for later this term.
Extra Curricular Timetable
Rossett School is very proud of its extra-curricular programme for students, which enhances the curriculum and provides extra learning opportunities for all. There are a number of opportunities for your child to take part in extra-curricular activities at lunchtime and after school, here at Rossett. A number of activities have been added for Spring 2023 so please encourage your child to have a look and see where they can get involved.
Acoustic Night: New Date - Thursday 27 April
Due to the weather conditions this week we regrettably took the difficult decision to postpone our Acoustic Night which was due to take place on Thursday evening. We are however delighted to let you know that we have rearranged this event for Thursday 27 April 2023 at 6:30pm (for a 6.45pm start).
The event will take place in the Main Hall and will feature performances from our extra-curricular music ensembles as well as a number of solo and small group, student-led performances in an 'unplugged/live lounge' style setting.
Tickets are available via SCOPAY only and are priced £4 for adults and £2 concessions (under 18 and seniors). If you have already purchased a ticket you do not have to do so again.
Reminder: Summer 2022 Examination Certificates
Please note: If certificates are not collected within 12 months, they may be confidentially destroyed. We are unable to post certificates due to the risk of loss or damage.
LRC News from Mr Asker
The crime of the week? No, not the former Health secretary’s What’s App messages but “The case of the missing R2D2 mug!” which has become a cause celebre amongst Year 7 and 8 students who have taken to pen, paper and keyboard to write down their stories and theories.
The standard of written work is incredibly high and it has been a pleasure to read the ones that have been handed in with many more to come. The always generous Miss Tolliday has agreed that there should be prizes for the best ones and next week I will update you on the winners. This is not going to be an easy task.
Next Wednesday Miss Tolliday, Mrs Brown and myself are taking two teams of students from Year 9 and Year 10 to the 'Battle of the Books' competition which is being hosted at St Aidan’s school. This years quizmaster is our good friend and all round top bookish chap author, Tom Palmer. We will be competing against other local schools with prizes and pride at stake! We are in it to win it and those students attending have been working hard on revising and preparing. Practice quizzes, power lifting the complete set of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and speed reading The Percy Jackson series should see us at peak book perfection by Wednesday. I will let you know how we get on next week.
I hope you have a bookish weekend.
