Rossett News Update - 30 June 2023
Rossett Heroes
Our Rossett Heroes this week are: Olia Nagirna, Olivia Penman and Evelyn Ridley in Year 10 along with Yusuf Ula and Jorgi Wason in Year 8.
- Olia Nagirna was nominated by a fellow student who wrote the most wonderful email that said, ‘I want to nominate Olia Nagirna in Year 10 as a Rossett Hero because I think she is the nicest person I’ve ever met. She is really helpful as well; she always helps me in lessons and never makes me feel ashamed of not knowing or not understanding, instead, she clearly explains everything whenever I feel lost. I've never heard anything negative about her from anybody else, whomever you ask, they will tell you that she's the nicest person they've ever met! For many reasons like these above, I believe she is a Rossett Hero (and an angel!).’ I think that’s the nicest student nomination we’ve received all year and Olia, you are clearly a Rossett Hero.
- Olivia was nominated by several students on our History trip to the First World War battlefields. One of them wrote that Olivia should be nominated, ‘For being kind and responsible for the entire trip and always being there to support others. She always has a smile on her face and has been constantly respectful and compassionate.’ The teachers witnessed this too, all through our time abroad. Thank you Olivia for helping us to make the battlefields trip a successful one, you are a Rossett Hero!
- Evelyn was also nominated by several students from our History trip. One of them wrote, ‘I think Evelyn should be the Rossett Hero because she is so selfless and genuinely makes you feel better. She cares for everyone else and helped me so much this trip with nervousness, even though we weren’t particularly good friends before the trip. This just emphasises the enormity of her kindness and she should definitely get the Rossett Hero award.’ As with Olivia, this wasn’t the only nomination we received and the evidence tells us clearly that Evelyn is everything that we would want our Rossett students to be. A definite Rossett Hero!
- Yusuf was nominated by Mrs Buxey because he’s given up several of his break and lunchtimes to help to train other students on how to use the lighting technology in the drama studio. Yusuf is always an incredibly polite young man, who is eager to help; giving up his social times in order to help others in this way is just one example of many that we could pick to demonstrate why Yusuf is a deserving Rossett Hero.
- Jorgi Wason was nominated by the whole production team of our incredible performance of Legally Blonde. Mrs Buxey wrote that Jorgi deserves a nomination for, ‘Stepping into a role for the production with 24 hours’ notice and delivering an outstanding performance. She’s a star in the making!’ We all appreciate you stepping up when we needed you Jorgi and without you we couldn’t have put on the production that has gone down so well with the audience. Well done on being a Rossett Hero.
To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.
Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.
"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Year 11 Prom Celebrations
On Wednesday evening our Year 11 students celebrated the end of their academic year and the 2023 exam period with their Prom at the Cedar Court Hotel, Harrogate. In true Rossett prom tradition, students arrived in style in vehicles ranging from a tractor and HGV wagon, to sports and vintage cars.
After welcome photographs and celebrations with their parents/carers, the students enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing. Mr Saunders (Deputy Headteacher) said that the students looked incredibly glamorous and were impeccably behaved throughout the event. I would like to thank all of our staff who attended and supported on the evening and helped make the event such a success. We look forward to celebrating the Year 13 Prom next week.
Biology Competition
On Wednesday this week, Mr Lee took four Year 12 students to the Royal Society of Biology Quiz at Myerscough College, Preston.
The students – Evan Kirk-Smith, Alex Twigg, Jo Eyles and Charlie Benson-Lee – did Rossett proud during this long and challenging day. The teams were given ten difficult Biology problems to solve, such as why hippos perform coprophagia (look it up!). The competition was stiff to say the least, as the team were competing against some of the top private schools in the country. Our resilient Rossett team did really well, scoring 712 points - the winners, Stonyhurst College, scored 770 points – so they were very near the top! Our students competed with personality, enthusiasm and wonder at the biological world - a tremendous performance and we can all be proud of them!
Music Tour to Belgium
A group of our talented Rossett musicians, singers and extra-curricular music groups left school today to embark on their 2023 music tour to Belgium. This is the first time since the pandemic that we have been able to organise one our most-loved trips in the school calendar and we are so glad it's back this year!.
The students will be playing in various locations as well as taking part in sight-seeing excursions such as a river cruise in Brugge and having fun at the Bellewaerde Theme Park. We look forward to sharing lots of photos of the tour on Facebook and also in Rossett News next week. We wish them luck with their performances.
Battlefields Trip
Our Year 9 and 10 students returned to school on Tuesday after a very hot and incredibly informative trip to the battlefields of the First World War. The trip took in many historical sights including visits to Hooge Crater Museum, Yser Tower Museum - a wonderfully different museum of the First World War located in an 84-metre high tower - and took part in a ceremony at the Menin Gate where students laid a wreath in remembrance.
We were delighted that Fraser Brown could take part in the trip whilst still recovering from a traffic accident earlier this year. We would particularly like to express our thanks to Mr Otway and Mr Saphir who made it possible for Fraser to access as much of the trip as possible. Thank you also to all of our staff who accompanied the students.
Charity Bake Sale
In recognition of Pride month, our LGBTQ+ group organised a bake sale today to raise money for Stonewall and The Kaleidoscope Trust. We received a fantastic number of cakes to sell to students at break time and the students also offered further sales of platters to staff throughout the day. Thank you to the group for organising the bake sale which has raised £135 so far.
Rossett School's 50th Anniversary
As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations we would like to celebrate the success of our former students and would like to invite anyone interested in joining the ranks of the Rossett School Alumni to share their stories and life experiences with us by emailing alumni@rossettschool.co.uk. Look out for more news about our celebrations later in the year.
LRC News from Mr Asker
Michael is one of our most well known writers for children (and adults) who has been a tireless advocate for children’s books and writing for many decades. Michael believes passionately in libraries, school libraries, getting authors into schools and encouraging all children to enjoy reading. He has been, rightly, a fierce critic of Government education policy and continues to speak passionately for the importance of the arts and reading in schools.
You may have also caught him this week on BBC1 on The Repair Shop Celebrating 75 years of the NHS. Michael spent several weeks in a coma after he became very ill with Covid in 2020. Since then he has written books about his time in hospital and his subsequent recovery. In the episode he wanted his “Patient Diary” or as he calls it “My Very Patient Diary” repairing. This is the book that nurses write so that patients can better understand what they have been through every day. It’s a particularly powerful episode and reminds us again that the world of children’s literature is so lucky to have Michael speaking fearlessly for books and children’s books particularly.
American Exchange
Following our recent American Exchange trips return leg the students from Rossett and Maine have shared their views and memories of their experience.
