National Careers Week 2024
National Careers Week 2024 takes place between the 4th- 9th March 2024. It is a great opportunity for parents and carers to get familiar with the routes that young people can take into the workplace. There are lots of different ways your child can get on track for great career pathways, and The Parents' Guide to National Careers Week 2024, gives an overview of what’s available for students at 16 and 18 years’ old, how they can find great opportunities, and where they might lead. It is never too early to get to grips with the routes and opportunities available once your child leaves school.
National Careers Week 2024 Virtual Careers Fair
For the last three years, National Careers Week has been running a Virtual Careers Fair that students can access online in their own time. Last year the fair had nearly 100 exhibitors, and this year promises to be even bigger and better. From the 4th March, students can access the Careers Fair at www.ncw.2024.co.uk
No registration is required, no data is collected from students and there is a wealth of opportunities for students to explore.
Students will be learning more about National Careers Week during form time, and we will provide a round-up of activities next week.
Spanish Pen Pal Exchange
At Rossett, we strive to encourage our students to become global citizens and we are delighted that our Year 9 students have had the amazing opportunity this year to be part of a pen pal exchange with students from the IES Palomeras-Vallecas school. Vallecas is situated on the outskirts of Madrid and has its own football team…maybe not as famous as Atlético or Real!
Our students wrote their first letter, presenting themselves in Spanish and asking a few questions and were excited to receive a parcel this week with some wonderful cards with Madrid landmarks in reply, along with some traditional sweets, colourful chocolate drops “Lacasitos” and strawberry flavoured “Palotes”. It was fantastic for our students to get these replies and we look forward to writing letters back.
LRC News from Mr Asker
Thursday 7th March is World Book Day, and we shall certainly be celebrating this fantastic day here in the LRC. World Book Day has been running in the UK for over twenty years with the simple aim of helping “children and young people to develop a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and enjoy the improved life chances this brings them.”
Study and research prove time and time again that children who read for pleasure regularly have improved academic outcomes, better mental health, and improved life outcomes generally. If you would like to know more about how you can support your child, then this link should help Families - World Book Day
All students will be offered the chance of collecting a £1 book token which they can exchange for a free book at participating book shops. More information can be found here 2024s-1-books (worldbookday.com)
There are lots of encouraging signs suggesting that young people are turning or returning to books, book shops and libraries. Publishing companies are enjoying a boost in profit due to the success of young adult authors like Sarah J Mass who has an amazing online presence and the numbers of book clubs for young people are increasing. Libraries are also enjoying a surge in popularity amongst young people with social media suggesting that libraries and librarians are, in fact, cool. When I mentioned this to my wonderful team of student librarians (our very own library elves) then their response is best summarised as:
“Yes, we know sir but that doesn’t include you!”
That’s me told.
We are though in tune with the times here at Rossett LRC HQ and it has been very busy since returning after half term. My highlight this week was welcoming a Year 7 class for a visit and no sooner were they through the door then they were browsing in silence and then curled up comfortably reading and I didn’t hear a peep out of them until the end of the lesson when there was a mini stampede to my desk to take the books home with them.
Have a great weekend everyone.
