iPads for Learning

All Year 7 students are required to have an iPad for lessons and no personal devices are allowed to be used in school.

Year 7 2025 iPad Scheme

The Year 7 2025 iPad programme has been launched and the deadline to join is Friday 27^th June 2025. After this date we cannot guarantee that a scheme iPad will be available for your child in September and they will be issued with a loaned iPad instead. Loan iPads are restricted to school-use only.

Loan iPads

Loan iPads can be provided from available stock in school and are modified for school-use only.  They are not available for purchase and must be returned to school on leaving or joining a future iPad scheme. Where possible we would aim to provide a device that is the same model or generation as their peers. It is allowed home as long as none of the rules are broken.

Loan iPads are subject to the same terms and conditions as scheme iPads, including the payment of a repair fee should it get damaged.  Please view our repair T&Cs to see what is and isn't covered and our repair process.  Please note it is not possible to repair the iPad anywhere other than through school, and that the iPad is not to be removed from its case other than by a member of the iPads or IT Services team in school. 

We allow one repair for every 12 months the iPad is in the student's possession. Should this allowance be exceeded, the iPad would not be allowed home.

iPads are not compulsory for Sixth Form students, although it is desirable. If a student isn’t already in an iPad scheme, they can provide their own iPad for use in school, or they can request a loan. Please see relevant section below.

There is no scheme available for Year 13 students, although you are able to provide your own iPad for use, or you can request a loan. See relevant section below.

Personal iPads

If you wish to provide your own device* in school please notify RSiPads@rs.rklt.co.uk and complete an iPad Consent Form

* Please note that if you choose to provide your own device then all responsibility for repair and maintenance will fall to home. You will not be able to repair your device through the school's repair service which is for school iPads only.

When a student leaves Rossett School they must return their school iPad back to us by their final day, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The only exception are those students in an iPad scheme where they may have an option to buy (see relevant section below).

All students need to sign out of their device and wipe their iPad back to Factory Settings before returning the iPad, case, and charger to the IT Services team next to Main Reception. They will be issued with an official returns receipt to confirm the condition of the iPad being handed back in, as well as any missing items.

Damaged or Missing Items

iPads should be returned undamaged with their case and an iPad Charger* This does not need to be an Apple Charger but it does need to be an iPad and not an iPhone charger and it needs to be one that can be used to charge the iPad being handed back in.

Where items are missing or damaged there will be a fee to pay to school to cover the school’s cost in replacing or fixing these.

£75 repair fee if the iPad is damaged or not working

£25 replacement fee if the charger is missing (or if parts of it are damaged)

* All iPads are issued with a charger. When new these are contained within the Apple Box along with the iPad. Loan iPads are provided with a charger (used or new) at issue. The only exception is where the iPad needs to be replaced. In those circumstances no charger is issued as the school expects the student to use their existing charger.

Students who have left us

We prefer iPads to be returned during term-time but can appreciate this may not always be possible. Where a student is not able to hand the iPad back in when school is open, please email the IT Services team at helpdesk@rklt.co.uk to arrange a mutual date and time to do this in the holidays.

iPads not returned 14 days after the return has been requested are locked  remotely. We find that this is plenty of time for students to save items they wish to keep before locking takes place and they can no longer open the iPad.

Items like app data generally should be in the student’s iCloud account, and photos should be in the iCloud drive, given that is where everything is backed up to. The iCloud drive can be accessed at any time at iCloud.com. You can also save items to OneDrive or another Cloud storage system instead.

Option to Buy

Loaned iPads

Loaned iPads are not available for purchase and must be returned to school.  Your child will have a loaned iPad if your child is not enrolled in one of our schemes (i.e. if you are not making contributions via the Digital Poverty Alliance, previously known as the Learning Foundation).

Scheme iPad

If your child is enrolled in a school iPad scheme they may have the option to buy the iPad, but this is linked to their iPad Scheme Terms & Conditions.

If your child’s iPad scheme started in September 2023 (or earlier) then you will have the option to buy your iPad as an alternative to returning it and you will be given a purchase price at the time we write to you.

NOTE: You will not receive an offer of purchase if your scheme started from 2024 onwards. For these schemes, the iPad can only be purchased at the Year 10 upgrade point, at the end of Year 11 (if they are leaving us after their GCSEs), OR at the end of Year 13. At all other times the iPad must be returned back to us.

Transfer of Ownership

Ownership of the iPad will transfer from school to home at the point payment is confirmed. The school will then release the IPad for personal use.

This is a 2-step process where the school’s technical team will first release the iPad from the school’s control. Then, after we have notified you that this has taken place, you will need to sign out of the device and wipe the iPad back to Factory Settings to remove restrictions completely. Please do not wipe the iPad back to Factory Settings before the first step has taken place as this will cause problems. If setting up the personal device using the same Apple ID as before, it is important to remember not to Restore from Backup as this will restore any restrictions back onto the iPad and the 2-step process will need to be followed again.

iPad repair terms & conditions

Students in the school iPad Scheme must submit their iPads for repair through the Finance Office so the iPad can repaired by an approved repairer. This is not a new-for-old replacement scheme. Should an iPad be uneconomical to repair or need replacing a similar or older used model will be issued.

The iPad must not be repaired through a third party, be removed from its protective case, be subjected to deliberate damage/vandalism or wilful neglect, or exceed the allowed number of repairs in any one scheme (see below).

Failure to adhere to these rules will mean that the student’s iPad will be re-classed as a Leave at School iPad. Where a student is in an iPad scheme, they will be removed from the scheme and any DD will be cancelled.

'Leave at School' iPads are provided on loan. They are collected/returned each day from a designated collection point in school and are not allowed home except in very exceptional circumstances (and then only with maximum restrictions placed upon the iPad). Students with 'Leave at School' iPad status are not eligible to join any future iPad scheme until they have completed two years without damage and where no money is owed to school.

What is Covered

The following repairs are covered under our repair service for school iPads only:

* Not all repairs are carried out at the standard repair rate. Please read our Repairs Procedure to see where a higher rate fee is payable.

What is Not Covered (Exclusions)

The following are not covered under our repair terms and conditions:

Accessories (cases, Apple charging plugs/charging cables, or earphones)

Loss/theft not reported to IT Services within two days of loss, unless this falls over a weekend or a holiday in which case it MUST be reported on the next available school day

Damage caused by any third party repair

'Leave at school' iPads taken home. In these instances the full repair cost will be payable to school.

Personal iPads. These must be repaired by home at own cost.

In addition, there are also common insurance exclusions. The major exclusions are:

Damage or destruction due to general wear and tear

Thefts from unattended cars where the item was not locked away from view

Theft or loss whilst the equipment has been left unattended in a public place (ie when not within your sight and control at all times)

Intentional damage or wilful neglect (this includes taking the iPad out of its case)

Important Update - Change to Online Payments:

From 1st September 2025, our new online payment platform, Arbor, will be in use. If you are already registered to the Arbor Parent Portal, you will be able to make payments on this portal. If you have not registered, please contact the school office at office@rs.rklt.co.uk

The school currently acts as the insurer and all repairs are subject to a mandatory pre-payment of a repair fee at the prevailing rate (see below).

This is the same as paying an insurance excess when making a claim under an insurance policy

Repair Fees

£75 for standard repairs

£150 double repair fee payable for lost or stolen, or water damaged iPads

PLEASE NOTE: Where an iPad repair or loss is not covered by our repair service (see Repair T&Cs) or the iPad is not handed in with a protective case on it, the full cost of the repair/replacement iPad is payable to the school before the iPad is returned to the student.

School iPad repairs procedure – 4 simple steps to follow

STEP 1: Check our iPad Repair Terms and Conditions to check that your repair is covered.

STEP 2: Complete an iPad Repair Form with as much detail as possible including witnesses (especially in the case of other student damage where we will need to corroborate your version of events or the repair and charge will be allocated to you). Please ensure the passcode you enter to open the iPad is included on the form as the repair cannot go ahead without this.

STEP 3: Make payment of the appropriate Repair Charge via Arbor

PLEASE NOTE: Replacement cases are not provided free of charge. If the iPad case is damaged (this includes those where the front cover is missing) please make an additional payment on Arbor as an iPad will not be returned without a case that will fully protect it.

STEP 4: Take the iPad to Main Reception.

We aim to send off iPads at least once per week during term-time, normally on a Tuesday afternoon. It is therefore important to hand in the iPad, pay the repair fee and submit a repair form as soon as possible as without these 3 things we cannot send the iPad off. A loan iPad will be provided when fee, form and iPad are with us. Please ask your child to take care of the loan iPad as any damage to the iPad upon return will raise another repair fee.

PLEASE NOTE: In the case of other student damage witness names must be provided to corroborate your child’s version of events.  An investigation will then take place via the Pastoral team with all parties and the outcome reported back to iPad Support for a final decision. To prevent a delay in repairing the iPad please pay the repair fee and submit the iPad through the normal repairs procedure. If the repair is allocated to another student it will be refunded back to you.

REPAIRED IPADS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR COLLECTION FROM MAIN RECEPTION AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN CHECKED OVER AND AN EMAIL HAS BEEN SENT HOME.

Whilst the Repair process is being undertaken, homework should be completed via a home PC, laptop or iPad using your home internet. This does not require apps to be downloaded. Students can access the full suite of Microsoft packages through Microsoft365. 

Repair Warranty

All iPads are inspected before they are returned to the student. It is therefore rare that a faulty repair is carried out. We ask parents/carers to visually check the iPad on the day of return, but ask you not remove the iPad from its case as this may invalidate any claim under the repair warranty.

If you have any concerns about your repair please inform iPad Support as soon as possible via RSiPads@rs.rklt.co.uk  and ask your child to return their iPad to iPad Support the following school day. If the repair is notified within a reasonable period of time (normally within two weeks of return) we may be able to attempt a repair under warranty. In these cases, we ask for another Repair Form and repair fee to be paid. This will be refunded back to you if the Repairers carry out the repair FOC under warranty.

In the case of dispute, iPad Support, under guidance from the IT Services team, will check all communications and repair history, and make a decision. This decision is final unless compelling evidence can be provided to the contrary.

Unfortunately, if you delay reporting a problem with the iPad repair and the school are charged, it will be treated as a separate incident of damage and we will have to pass this on by way of a repair fee and allocation of the repair against the student’s repair allowance.

Please assist the school by raising any issues, however small, with either the IT Services team or iPad Support as soon as possible.

What to do if your iPad is lost or stolen

It is important to move swiftly on the loss or theft of a school iPad to maximise its safe return. It is therefore important that the iPad is regularly charged and backed up, and that the following actions are undertaken as soon as possible:

1. Go onto FindMyDevice using a home or school computer, home laptop or iPad and click “Play Sound”. This will give an audible noise to help you locate your device whilst it is still charged up.

2. If you are unable to locate the iPad via “Play Sound” please put the item into “Lost Mode” and inform IT Services as soon as possible (or iPad Support at RSiPads@rs.rklt.co.uk. iPad Support work throughout the school holidays on Mondays and Tuesdays until 4pm.

3. If you are certain the iPad has been stolen (or permanently lost) please “Erase” the iPad immediately and follow the normal iPad Repair procedure including any Police Incident No, on your repair form. When the iPad next connects to Wi-Fi, it will be erased.

This is the final step if your iPad is permanently lost or stolen, but please do not worry. Provided you have been backing up regularly you will lose little or none of your work (or Apps) when any replacement iPad is restored using your personal AppleID.

If Your Child has a Managed Apple ID and Cannot follow the steps above:

Charges for a Lost or Stolen iPad

Lost or stolen iPads (provided they do not fall under the What Is not Covered (Exclusions) on the iPad Repair T&Cs are subject to the Higher Repair fee, payable before a replacement device can be issued. This fee is displayed on our Repairs Procedure page.

Whilst your child is without their iPad, they can access their emails and complete homework using a home internet connection via a laptop, tablet or iPad by logging into Outlook365 using their normal student log in details.

Additional Information to be aware of:

If you leave your iPad on a bus or alone in a park, take it on holiday and leave it behind or on the plane, for example, this would not be covered under our Repair Service because the iPad is considered to have been left unattended. In such cases, students will be provided with a Leave At School iPad, unless you pay the full cost of a replacement device.

This is not a new for old scheme. Subject to availability, a replacement used iPad of a similar age and model to the lost device will be issued. Where this is not possible the school reserves the right to replace the iPad with an older model from stock.

Quite often an iPad can turn up within a couple of weeks and if this is the case and you have been provided with a replacement iPad, you will be refunded when the replacement iPad is returned, as long as it (and all its accessories) have been returned undamaged.

If you plan to claim off your house insurance a receipt for this payment can be provided for your insurer please email iPad Support at RSipads@rs.rklt.co.uk with your insurer details so that this can be forwarded onto them.
