Rossett News Update - 21 June 2019

Next Steps Week

Next Steps Week has been a huge success, with our Year 12 students taking part in a variety of activities including: community engagement events with Harrogate Borough Council; university trips to Leeds Beckett and Manchester University;  a Careers Conference with representatives from business, veterinary science and the law, and the return of many  alumni to talk about their experiences of university, employment and apprenticeships.  Thank you to everyone who took part and gave their valuable time and knowledge helping our students to look at various pathways and careers for their future.

Summer Spectacular

On Wednesday evening Rossett took over the Royal Hall for our Summer Spectacular concert.  It was a fabulous evening and a joyful community event with students from Pannal and Saltergate Primary Schools also taking part.  There were  excellent performances from the primary school children's Year 4 ukulele orchestras and a mixed Year 4 and 5 choir singing 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'.We were also glad to celebrate Mrs Waddington's twenty years here at Rossett;  she was thanked by students past and present with gifts and speeches marking her huge contribution to their musical lives.  Many thanks to all of the staff and students in every school involved in the event especially our peripatetic teachers who have worked so hard in preparation for this annual extravaganza.

Geog fieldworkGCSE Geographical Enquiries - Fieldwork

As part of the Geography GCSE examination students undertake two geographical enquiries which include the use of primary data, collected as part of a fieldwork exercise.  The first fieldwork data-collecting exercise has been taking place this week at Gill Beck which runs in to Fewston Reservoir off Blubberhouses Moor. Students commented on how much the enjoyed the fieldwork exercise and how beneficial they found it for their studies. The second exercise will take place early in the 2019-2020 academic year, starting with a trip to York.

Pride in Diversity

It was wonderful to see so many of our students take part in the Pride in Diversity celebrations last Saturday returning to Harrogate town centre for the third year.  The festival parade was led by a 50-metre long rainbow flag, an open-top bus and a marching band.  The festivities continued in the Valley Gardens with a party that lasted for the rest of the afternoon.  Rossett students, once again turned out in force in support of this event; Mr Hopkins and Miss Collins were incredibly proud of the way they represented the school.

Reminder: The Rossett LGBTQ+ Drop In runs every Thursday break time in R13. We offer a space in which students can seek advice, gain support and meet our lovely LGBTQ+ students and their passionate allies. All students are welcome to join us in our efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community here at Rossett.

The PTA are also seeking a Treasurer to join the Committee. If you would be interested in finding out more about  this opportunity please  contact info@rossettpta.co.uk or come along to the meeting to find out more.

PTA Memorial Bench

With money raised from the PTA Quiz Night, the PTA are purchasing a bench in memory of Darren Loring, who contributed so much to the PTA's charitable events prior to being Chair.  Mr Loring sadly passed away at the end of last year and we are pleased that there will be a lasting reminder of his efforts here at school.  The bench will be placed in the Senory Garden providing an area for quiet reflection.
