Rossett News Update - 7 October 2022

Open Day

It was wonderful to welcome so many Year 5 and Year 6 students and their parents and carers to Rossett School on Saturday for our Open Day.   There was a wonderful buzz of activity and discussion throughout the morning, and we were delighted to receive the pages of positive feedback from our visitors.  We were particularly proud of our student ambassadors with many of our visitors commenting how articulate, helpful and informative they were - we couldn't agree more, and are very proud of how they represented our school.

Each faculty took the opportunity to showcase their department, and our subject teachers were eager to convey how our knowledge-rich curriculum leads to exciting and engaging lessons.  From thrilling Science experiments to History where topics were animated through costume - Mr Grainger appeared dressed as a soldier and brought to life the experience of the battlefield. We hope that everyone who visited enjoyed the morning and was able to see why we believe our excellent teaching and strong community focus make us an obvious choice for families.

Wednesday Evening saw our Sixth Form Information Evening hosted 'live' for the first time in recent years.  Again, we were delighted to welcome parents and carers of students in Year 11 to see what our wonderful Sixth Form has to offer.  Following presentations by the Senior Leadership Team the Head of Sixth Form and our Prefects, the Subject Fair in the Sixth Form Centre provided detailed information about the courses and enrichment opportunities on offer at Rossett School.

Sixth Form Ambassadors were available throughout the evening and talked about their  experiences of life in the Sixth Form.

If you were unable to attend, or if you are an external student applying for Rossett Sixth Form, and would like to receive more information about our fantastic provision please contact rkeyworth@rossettschool.co.uk or visit the Sixth Form area of our website here.

Year 7 Settling-in Evening

Our new Year 7 students are settling in fantastically well to life at Rossett School;  we are delighted with their progress.  On Thursday evening we were pleased to welcome the parents and carers of our students in Year 7 to discuss these first few important weeks with their child's Form Tutor.  It was lovely to welcome so many parents and carers into school and hear about the students successes and triumphs.

'September Surprise 2022' , (Thursday 13th October)

We have a tradition of running our annual autumn concert at this time of year; the long-standing joke is that it is called the September Surprise, but it is always held in October!

We are delighted to invite parents/carers of students in Year 7 in particular to our wonderful evening of musical performance on Thursday 13th October at 6.30pm.  During the first few weeks at school our new Year 7 students have been busy in their music lessons learning a selection of songs to perform at this annual event.

The concert will also feature a selection of our extra-curricular ensembles and solo performances which reflect the diverse talents of our students.  Tickets for the event are on sale from Monday 7th October via Scopay; adult tickets are £4 and concessions are £2.  Please contact Mr Durbin for further information rdurbin@rossettschool.co.uk.

We invite all Year 7 students to take part in the big sing and sincerely hope as many students as possible will enjoy this opportunity to get their Rossett musical journey off to a bang and perform at this memorable event; please follow the link here to indicate whether your child will be taking part in the concert.

Extra-Curricular Timetable

Rossett School is very proud of its extra-curricular programme for students, which enhances the curriculum and provides extra learning opportunities for all. There are a number of opportunities for your child to take part in extra-curricular activities at lunchtime and after school, here at Rossett.  We will endeavour to update you via this newsletter and form tutors when there are changes or additions to this timetable.

The late bus to Leeds runs Wednesday to Friday and students need to sign up for this using the QR code which can be found in Reception.  To view this document in detail, please click here.

Reading Test

Next week during English lessons, students will be engaging with an online comprehension test.  This will give your child a reading age score, which will be used to help teaching and learning in the classroom. If your child's reading age is significantly below their chronological age, you may be contacted separately regarding additional interventions that will be used to support them to make progress.  Please encourage your child to try their best in this test so our results are as reliable as possible.

Homework Club

A reminder to all students that the Learning Resource Centre is available after school Monday-Thursday for any students wishing to stay behind to complete their homework, engage in reading or make use of the school computers.

The Leeds Late Bus operates Wednesday and Thursday for any students travelling home after Homework Club.

Mrs Normand (Teacher of MFL) represents Scotland in the Masters World Cup Hockey Tournament 2022

Most of our parents/carers will know Mrs Normand as a long-standing member of our Languages Faculty, but did you know she also represents Scotland in international hockey events?  We were delighted for Mrs Normand when she was selected to play in the Masters World Cup Hockey Tournament which is currently taking place in Cape Town, South Africa.

The team have now progressed to the semi-finals of the event top of their group with wins against South Africa, Chile, USA and Ireland.  In the final match of the group today against Argentina, Mrs Normand scored the winning goal from a short corner!

In line with our absence policy, the governors were pleased to support Mrs Normand following her selection for the Scottish Team and we are delighted to have welcomed Ms Zamorano Ferrer to Rossett to cover during Mrs Normand's absence.  We wish Mrs Normand and the rest of the team well for the remainder of the tournament. Mr AskerLRC News from Mr Asker

Please do encourage your child to visit the LRC in the next couple of weeks as we will have a range of new and exciting books on offer.

Titles include:

The Ministry of Unladylike Activity by Robin Stevens; Lumberjanes Volumes 1 to 4 by ND Stevenson; My Neighbour Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki, Star Wars (The Mandalorian Season) by various authors; Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs; and many more, including recent new publications by Michael Morpurgo, Emma Carroll, Phillip Pullman, Becky Chambers and Cavan Scott.

I continue to try and stock a wide range of fiction including manga, historical fiction, comic books, science fiction, graphic novels, fantasy and murder mysteries and will buy books very willingly if students come along and talk to me about authors that they would like to see represented.  Certainly, Becky Chambers is a new author to the LRC (and me!) and my thanks to Adam in Year 11 for the recommendation and request.

Black history monthAs you will be aware it is Black History Month currently. In the LRC there are a number of books that are on display and available for students to borrow.  This includes Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Ghost Boys also by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Kemosha of the Caribbean by Alex Wheatle, The Dark Lady by Akala, Booked by Kwame Alexander and The Black History Book with a foreword by David Olusoga.  I hope that the students find these books inspiring, enjoyable and interesting.

Finally, it was wonderful to welcome so many families and students to the LRC on open day last Saturday.  There was lots of brilliant book talk and recommendations and my “to read” list is now even longer.

Have a great weekend.

Mr Asker
