Rossett News Update - 5 November 2021

cop26COP26

In tutor time this week, students have been discussing the climate change conference currently taking place in Glasgow. This has generated plenty of interesting discussions about how students can reduce their own contribution to climate change. Many students have made their own 'promise to the planet' as part of an initiative promoted by the WWF. In school  displays have been created using the promises made by our students. Across the country many schools have taken part, and an online 'forest of promises' can be viewed using the hashtags #forestof promises and #promisetotheplanet on social media.

Following this raising of awareness in COP26 week, our Geography department are launching a Climate Change Action Group, which is an opportunity for students in KS3 (initially) to discuss and implement their ideas around how our school can become more climate friendly. The first of the weekly meetings is taking place during the second half of early lunchtime (12:45) in J3 on Monday 8 November. Students can contact Mr Wilson for more details.

Changed Date for your Diary: NHS COVID Vaccinations for students ages 12-16

We have had confirmation that the NYCC NHS vaccination team will be hosted by school on Monday 22 November. They have asked us to pass on the following information to parents/carers.

If your child has already received a Covid vaccination at a vaccination centre we ask that you inform the vaccination team by following the link to their email address here.

Any parent who has not yet returned their child's consent forms, but still wishes to do so are able to.  Please return any further consent forms to your child's Form Tutor as soon as possible.

The NHS literature states that the main purpose of the COVID-19 school age vaccination programme is to provide protection to the children who receive the vaccine and may help to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in the wider population.  Children will NOT be vaccinated without the consent of a parent/carer.

Parents' Evenings this term

We had a really good start to our Parents' Evening schedule for this year with Year 11 this week.  We surveyed parents, students and staff regarding this change following the period of remote learning.  Our remote Parents' Evening bookings for Years 12 and 13 are currently open and will close at 12pm on Thursday 11 November.

Oxbridge Conference Supporting Year 13 Students

Rossett Sixth Form students who are making Oxbridge applications, and also applications to Imperial College, were invited to an interview practice seminar on Wednesday 20 October  at Harrogate Grammar School.  Our students are making applications for courses that require formal interviews and it was fantastic for them to have the opportunity to develop their interview techniques. Eight Year 13 students attended the event where they  received guidance and took part in mock interviews. The interviewers were teachers from schools in the wider Red Kite Alliance  who specialise in the students' chosen degree areas and all received personalised feedback and advice to improve their interview technique.

PoppyRemembrance Day

On Thursday11 November the whole school will join together to mark Armistice Day with the playing of the Last Post followed by a two-minute silence and ending with the 'Reveille'.  We will be holding assemblies to remind students that the freedoms we enjoy today are as a result of the sacrifices made by those we remember at this time of year.  The school recognises the importance of passing this message on to our students to ensure they understand the significance of Remembrance;  we expect them to carry this responsibility into the future.

Continuation of Lateral Flow Testing for students and staff

We ask that our parents and students  support our safer school initiative by testing on Sunday and Wednesday evenings  and report the results – whether positive, negative or void – to NHS Test and Trace via the self-report option at https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result  and  also inform the school at: https://rossett.school/studentcovidreport. It is our current understanding that this national initiative will continue until the Christmas holiday.

This information is helping the Government to understand the prevalence of the virus across the country.

Please note that this asymptomatic testing programme does not replace current guidance for those who develop the three Covid-19 symptoms, even if mild, which is to arrange a PCR test as soon as possible.  If your child develops a high temperature, a new continuous cough or loses their sense of smell or taste or it changes they should self-isolate until they receive the results of their PCR test.

As you may be aware the self-isolation rules have changed and students no longer need to self isolate if someone in their household has symptoms or has tested positive for Covid-19 if any of the following apply:

  • students are under 18 years 6 months old
  • students are fully vaccinated
  • students are taking part or have taken part in a Covid-19 vaccine trial
  • students are not able to be vaccinated for medical reasons

In such cases, even if they do not have symptoms, students should still:

If you have any questions please email Mr Royles droyles@rossettschool.co.uk.

Cross CountryWell done to...

Our students who took part in the Harrogate and Craven Schools' Cross Country event yesterday.  The students had a fantastic afternoon and competed in races where the standards of competition were particularly high.  The Year 9 girls' team performed exceptionally well, as did Eleanor Easton and Natasha Littlejohns in Year 7 who were placed in the top twenty five positions. Well done to all who took part.
