Rossett News Update - 31 March 2023

Rossett Heroes

Our Rossett Heroes this week are Arina Osaulenko, Elena McKenzie and Evie-Rae Edmundson in Year 7 as well as Katie Lamb in Year 8.

Arina came to England early in this academic year from Ukraine and did not speak  English, yet her progress in the language, in just six months, is amazing. Mrs Grimshaw nominated Arina as a Rossett Hero not only due to her fantastic resilience, but also because she is just the kindest, most polite, friendly and helpful student. Arina, you do your country proud and you make us proud – you are a Rossett Hero!

Elena was nominated by Mrs Ula because she is always dressed smartly, always says hello, always supports her peers if they ever need help and doesn’t need to be asked to do so. Mrs Ula says that Elena is always a pleasure to talk to in the classroom and around school.

Evie-Rae has been nominated by Mr Otway for always demonstrating respect, resilience and responsibility but more specifically for being seen helping one of her classmates, on more than one occasion, without being asked to do so. Evie-Rae, you make our community a better place – you are a Rossett Hero!

Katie in Year 8 was nominated by Mr Kilbride for helping a friend during a difficult time. Mr Kilbride says, ‘she handled it beautifully; mature, calm and reassuring. What a lovely, gifted, caring young person.’ Katie, thank you for looking out for others – you are a Rossett Hero!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Transition Showcase Evening

We were delighted to welcome our new Year 7s for September 2023 and their parents/carer to our Transition Showcase Evening on Tuesday.  The event provided the opportunity to hear  from our current Acting Headteacher, Mr Saunders and Mr Sheriff, CEO of the Red Kite Learning Trust.  There were also presentations from our current Year 7 students and the Year 7 pastoral team.

There were performances from students who are currently rehearsing for our summer production of 'Legally Blonde' and everyone was given the opportunity to sample the wonderful selection of food available to our students at a buffet supper in our Learning Resource Centre.  Parents/carers also had the opportunity to speak to our senior leaders and gain further information around uniform, transport, SEND and other aspects of life at Rossett School.

All of our KS4 Performing Arts students visited the Darlington Hippodrome yesterday to watch a production of 'Teechers' - a fast-paced comedy written by John Godber. The students were exceptionally well behaved and represented the school with maturity.    Thank you to Mrs Buxey, Mrs McLurg and Miss Lewis for accompanying the students on the trip.

LRC News from Mr Asker

Between the coversA great way into reading for pleasure is the BBC 2 show 'Between The Covers' hosted by Sara Cox.  Each episode Sara is joined by a variety of celebrities who love reading for pleasure as they discuss new releases, old classics, much loved favourites and the quirks, joys and eccentricities of those who can’t keep their nose out of a book.  All of the episodes are available through iPlayer.  Don’t complain if I’m wrong but the weather forecast for the holiday seems to be an improving one, so it is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy a book in the spring sunshine.  An ideal present for your child alongside (instead might be pushing it too far!) the Easter eggs would of course be a book or a trip to your local bookshop for a fresh read to enjoy. Equally a trip to your local library is always worthwhile.

Here in Rossett LRC HQ it has been a busy week with some great Year 8 book chat with a visiting class and lots of “Sir, can you recommend me a book that is quite funny but has a good story too?” and “Sir, do you have that book, you know the one with the red cover that I was reading last time?” Meanwhile the student librarian elves have plans for a major re-organisation of the fiction sections and would like books to be displayed in genres.  Bookish enthusiasm is a brilliant thing but that discussion and any possible re-organisation will have to wait until after the holidays.  Phew! Wherever your holiday takes you and your family then I hope it is a good one and my Easter bookish wishes to you all.

Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC) Summer Extravaganza - It's a knockout 2023

We are excited to announce that through the kind generosity of Harrogate Railway Athletic F.C our Summer Extravaganza featuring It’s A Knockout is returning!  This extraordinary day is back and bigger than ever.  This will be taking place on Sunday 4 June 2023 at the Harrogate Railway Athletic F.C. HG2 7JA.  We would really appreciate it if you could share the below with your faculty, contacts, friends and family.

This will be an amazing opportunity to enhance team building across departments, colleagues and students over the age of 16 all whilst supporting your local NHS.  Why not compete with other local schools or students verses faculty for some friendly competition?  There’s nothing quite like going head-to-head on a giant inflatable obstacle course for building trust and improving relationships between teams!  It’s not about speed, stamina or strength, all you need to take part is good team communication and an inventive way to solve challenges.

We are looking for teams and individuals to take part in our It’s A Knockout challenge.  Each team that signs up to this wacky challenge will enjoy a wide range of obstacles such as a wheel barrow race, inflatable hurdles, foam surprises and much more.  What you will encounter is anyone’s guess?  You can get involved today by clicking here to register your place for a donation of £25 per person or £250 per team of 10.

Alternatively if spectating is more to your taste which is great for parents and students under 16, you can come along to the Summer Extravaganza which will be an event packed with something for the whole family to enjoy.  Bouncy castle, face painting, games, donkeys, delicious food and a licensed bar.  Not forgetting the main attraction of It’s A Knockout!  You can get your tickets for £6 per person over the age of 3 or £20 for a family of four.  Tickets include one hot food item and one soft drink.  Click here to join in today

For more information or you would like to discuss this opportunity further, please do not hesitate to give the HHCC and Volunteer Team a call on 01423 557408 or send an email to hdft.hhcc@nhs.net.
