Rossett News Update - 30 September 2022

Rossett School Open Day and Parents' Information Evening 2022

Rossett welcomed the parents/carers of Year 6 pupils to listen to a presentation from the Headteacher about our school and our educational philosophy last night.  Parents also had an opportunity to visit the Learning Resource Centre to speak to faculties about the curriculum as well as find out about admissions, transport and much more.

This will be followed by our Open Day this Saturday 1 October (9.30am-12noon) where parents and Year 5 & 6 children are invited to meet our students and teachers and see the school in action.  A number of exciting activities will take place throughout the morning and our specialist teams of teaching, pastoral and SEND staff will be on hand to answer any questions .

Sixth Form Information Evening - Wednesday 5th October 2022

A further reminder that our Sixth Form Information Evening for Year 11 students and parents will be held on Wednesday 5th October commencing at 6.00pm with  presentations from the Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form.  This is a very important evening as the Subject Fair – which takes place in the Sixth Form Centre – will provide detailed information about the courses and enrichment opportunities on offer.  Our Sixth Form Ambassadors will be available during the evening and parents and students are encouraged to speak to them about their experiences at Rossett.

We strongly encourage all of our current Year 11 students and their parents/carers to attend this event to allow them to consider post-16 options for the Summer of 2023.

'September Surprise 2022' , (Thursday 13th October)

We have a tradition of running our annual autumn concert at this time of year; the long-standing joke is that it is call the September Surprise but it is always held in October!

We are delighted to invite parents/carers of students in Year 7 to our wonderful evening of musical performances on Thursday 13th October at 6.30pm.  During the first few weeks at school our new Year 7 students have been busy in their music lessons learning a selection of songs to perform at this annual event.

The concert will also feature a selection of our extra-curricular ensembles and solo performances which reflect the talent of our students - it is traditionally a great evening!  Tickets for the event are on sale from Monday 7th October via Scopay; adult tickets are £4 and concessions are £2.  Please contact Mr Durbin for further information rdurbin@rossettschool.co.uk.

European Day of Languages

Students at Rossett were able to join in with the celebration of the European day of languages throughout the day on Monday 26th September. Teachers from different subjects shared their knowledge of foreign languages with our students greeting them in a foreign language and sharing their experiences abroad.

KS3 students enjoyed receiving their European languages day stickers in form time and all students were able to purchase delicious European dishes prepared by our catering team that day, decorated with flags from their country of origin. Paella was a firm favourite!

In MFL lessons, students had the opportunity to take part in languages competitions, explore the Spy language App and find out more about the importance of learning a language.

Hepworth Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit

In support of their GCSE Art studies, art students in Year 11  enjoyed visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth Gallery on  Thursday this week.  Experiencing original art in a gallery and outdoor setting is important for GCSE students, and all those who took part in this visit gained a fantastic insight into the working practices and outcomes of some of the world’s most significant sculptors.

Keeping in Touch

We would like to extend  an open invitation to all parents/carers to send in any general questions about school and the curriculum as we have now returned to our pre-pandemic organisation of classes, and social time.

Please email any queries to questions@rossettschool.co.uk.  We will read all replies and provide an FAQ in response to any common area of concern. If you have any queries specifically about your child(ren) please contact their year team in the first instance.

Year 13 Geography Fieldwork Trip

This week, Y13 Geography students have been carrying out primary data collection in Hornsea as part of their NEA. This has involved measuring the impact of coastal defences on the rate of erosion along the coast, and a range of human data collection methods in the town centre. Mr Stone and Mr Wilson have been impressed with the way in which the students have carried out their work and the positive attitudes demonstrated throughout the trip - even when asked to complete chores in the hostel. Students will now begin the write-up of their investigation for their A' level course.

Well done to...

  • Dan Thompson (Year 8) who has recently taken part in five meetings which make up the UK Autograss Series which have been held all over the UK.  Dan competes against other 12-16 year olds with around 20-25 competitors in his class at each meeting.  Dan was unbeaten in all of his races this year, winning the class championship and was also top point scorer of all the under 16-year-olds competing against all classes.  This is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of his success!
