Rossett News Update - 3 March 2023

Reuben and FraserReuben and Fraser:  Update

We are delighted to let you know that both Reuben and Fraser have now left hospital to continue their recovery at home.   Fraser even managed to visit Reuben's house this week so that they could spend some time together whilst recuperating.

We were even more delighted to welcome both boys into school this lunchtime so that they were able to catch-up with all of  their friends and classmates  - there were smiles all round!  Whilst they still have a long road ahead we are so pleased to see the boys smiling and dealing with their recovery so bravely.

At Rossett  we are fortunate to have a large number of  wonderful students who make up our 'Rossett family'. So many of our students regularly make us incredibly proud through their actions which help to make our school and our community a better place.  Reuben and Fraser have shown incredible courage over the last few weeks following their terrible accident but now they would like to recognise the students who have supported them and have put some words together to explain why they think that the  students below deserve our recognition.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through these last couple of weeks.  I can’t thank everyone enough for their love and support.  The people who came to hospital  to see me  and Reuben, and sat with us to keep us company are the ones who deserve  our gratitude.  Thank you so much to Dillon Bhogal, Frankie Pinnock, Ellie Read, Tim Baker,  Jake Bowers and  Dom Wilshaw (not pictured).  There are so many more to thank too, so, once again, thank you so much to everyone who has

been there for me".

Bewerley Park: Reports from Students

Some of our Year 7 students who visited Bewerley Park last week were eager to provide a report of their time on the trip and the fun and challenges they experienced:

Bewerley park was an amazing outdoor education experience and we all had a phenomenal time. We have made many life long memories. We had a brilliant choice of activities and  we found out a lot about each other and ourselves. I did rock climbing, gorge walking, high ropes, low ropes and mountain biking. My favourite was probably rock climbing because we did a lot of team work and as I am very claustrophobic I faced my fear by going through lots of small spaces.

I also really enjoyed high ropes as that was the leap of faith and I had been scared of that for the past four years. It’s a tall wooden pole with a wobbly small platform at the top, you have to try and jump off the platform then catch a trapeze bar and then do a pull-up -  I did it !  I  loved the fact that we got to do this with school.

Chloe Pomeroy

Bewerley Park is an amazing experience that everyone enjoyed and the instructors help you along the way. It is a great way to build up your confidence. We did lots of activities such as gorge exploring, high ropes, mine exploring, mountain biking and rock climbing - these are just a few of the fabulous things you can do. My favourite activity was high ropes were we climbed the leap of faith where you need to trust your team to pull you up with a rope attached to your harness. If you make it to the top of the leap of faith you jump and grab a trapeze and let go!

National Careers WeekNational Careers Week

National Careers Week takes place from Monday 6 March and throughout the week all students will be focussing on prospective careers.  At the start of each lesson teachers will provide a short overview of their career journey to raise awareness of the value of all jobs and skills and how personal qualities can be developed by different workplace experiences.

Each classroom will display a door plaque specific to each teacher's career journey. Students will be asked to consider how different career pathways can develop the skills and personal attributes that employers look for such as punctuality, being responsible, problem solving and numeracy and literacy skills.

R2D2LRC News from Mr Asker

This week’s World Book Day on Thursday March 2nd saw my prized R2D2 drinking mug go missing from the LRC.  Luckily Year 7 were on the case to write down their most likely suggestions or explanations as to what has happened to it.

Further updates next week and I am looking forward to reading the students' work.  I have my suspicions but let’s see what the children say first.

By now every student in the school has received their World Book Day voucher.  This year it has been sent out electronically and please do let me know how this goes and whether you have any issue with retailers accepting them.

The recent Roald Dahl issue that made national news was a hot discussion point in form periods, the staff room and the library this week.  Quite rightly there has been any number of views and opinions and, as I suspected, a large number of students in asking to borrow the books.

It has been frustrating to read this week that the Chartered Institute for Public Finance and Accountancy report that expenditure on public libraries in Great Britain has fallen by 17% and this is further to falls in spending in the past few years. However library use nationally has increased significantly as has the numbers of books being borrowed. There is no doubt though that libraries across the country face real economic challenges in the next couple of years.

Libraries are a vital part of our communities and not just for the incredible books that are available to borrow for free.  They are where a parent can take their toddler to hear a story with other children and meet other parents, it is where knit and chat groups for elderly people can meet with all the benefits that such company gives, libraries can be used by students who need a quiet space to study and they are where you can get access to free computers, advice, support and they are warm and welcoming.  Libraries have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years.  They matter.  Hopefully things will improve soon.

I hope you have a bookish weekend.
