Ofsted

As you know we had a visit from Ofsted on Tuesday as part of a Section 8 monitoring inspection. Whilst we have to wait 30 days before we can share the outcome and findings, the initial feedback we have received is very helpful. When the letter is released, it will, of course, be shared with parents and the wider community. I then intend to hold a parent meeting so you can hear how this inspection will be used to continue our journey of rapid improvement.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both staff and students, and you, for your continued support.

Year 8 students theatre trip

Our Year 8 students visited the West Yorkshire Playhouse yesterday afternoon to watch a live 'in the round' theatre performance of Oliver.  We were delighted to offer this experience to our students as they are studying the book in their English lessons and also as part of the Drama studies lessons.  Students had a wonderful afternoon and all of the students were engrossed and gave a standing ovation at the end.  It was lovely that members of the public commented on how 'delightful' and 'wonderful' our young people were.  Thank you to all of the staff who accompanied the trip and made it possible.

LRC News from Mr Asker

An independent review of libraries in England is calling for the appointment of a libraries laureate who can advocate on behalf of libraries and help promote their crucial role and importance.

The current children’s laureate Joseph Coelho has expressed his support.

“I struggled with my literacy, and it was the library that helped me overcome that,” said the author. “What if I hadn’t gone to the library? I was the first in my family to go to university, but I think I would have slipped out of the system if it wasn’t for the library. Libraries changed my life. I wouldn’t be a writer now without them. That’s why I’m calling for a library laureate.”

It would be great to see someone with a high profile who can take this role on and be a champion for libraries across the country.

On Thursday this week, I joined the Book Trust Book Buzz panel to help select the titles for Book Buzz 2024. This was an exciting day where panel members discussed which books would be chosen for this scheme which is aimed at students in Year 7 and 8 across the UK. As you can imagine it wasn’t easy producing a final selection of books.  The shortlist remains confidential for now but there are some amazing titles and authors represented. Rossett school will be taking part in Book Buzz again next year and we know that it is something that students really enjoy, value, and look forward to.

We have some new books in the library and please do encourage your daughter and/or son to pop in and have a look. There are some great new titles especially for fans of Young Adult Fantasy and new copies of Heartstopper 5 by Alice Oseman and Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell.
