Rossett News Update - 17 March 2023

Rossett Heroes

Mikey in Year 7 didn’t realise that Mr Kilbride was watching when he saw Mikey put his book to one side and say, ‘Can I help you with that?’ to a classmate that he saw was struggling with his work. He then proceeded to show his classmate what to do. Every act of kindness, no matter how small they seem, help to make the world and Rossett a better place – Mikey, you are a Rossett Hero.

Millie Smith, Sofiah Clayton and Cameron Simpson are all part of the same Year 9 French class where a group of students were finding their French speaking assessment preparation really daunting. The three students went out of their way to support these students in different ways, empowering their classmates to produce a better outcome and in one instance the best performance that Mrs Clarkson has ever seen. Millie, Sofiah and Cameron, thank you for your contributions to the success of others – you are Rossett Heroes!

To find our next Rossett Heroes, we need you! Do you know of any member of the Rossett community that deserves recognition as a Rossett Hero? No matter how big or small you believe the act to be, we want to hear from you - every nominated person will be recognised and congratulated even if they don't make it into the newsletter that particular week.

Please email Mr Otway aotway@rossettschool.co.uk if you have witnessed or experienced an act of kindness that we might might not be aware of.

"Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." - Scott Adams

Battle of the Books Winners

Proving that there ‘ain’t no party like a book quiz party’ two teams of Year 9 and 10 students attended 'Battle of the Books' at St Aidan’s School on Wednesday this week.  Competing against other local schools, Rossett showed their bookish colours and did so with good humour, positivity and friendliness throughout.  Both teams performed very well in every round and I am delighted to share that Year 9 won a prize of a new book each for their performance in round 5.  Plus there was Tom Palmer as quiz host, Imagined Things Bookshop and really great snacks. Naturally what goes on book tour stays on book tour but the ‘curious incident of the water bottle between rounds time’ will live long in the memory of those who saw it.  Don’t worry Mia we won’t tell them it was you.

A bookish well done to our Year 10 team of Matan 10RHF, Tallulah 10RHF, Mia 10ASR, Holly 10RHF AND our Year 9 team of Reina 9ECS, Dan 9AHR, Iona 9ECS and Millie 9ECS.  My thanks to Mrs Brown and Miss Tolliday for their support and good humour at this event.

R2D2 winnersR2D2 Competition Winners

Back at Rossett LRC HQ this has been a difficult head scratching week of trying to choose the best pieces about the missing R2D2 mug.  The standard of work has been breathtaking and it has been exciting to read stories, cartoons, comic strips, story boards and reports.  However after much deliberation I am pleased to confirm that the first prize of a £10 Imagined Things bookshop voucher goes to Rachel in 8SHN and runner up prizes of a new book each go to Martha 7TEK, Sophie 7TEK, Bethany 8DGR, Ben 8DGR, Lottie 7CFN, Aleah 7CFN, Ava 7CFN and Ralph 7CFN.

A busy and great week!  Have a bookish weekend everyone.

British Physics Olympiad Success

Before half term, our Year 12 Physicists took part in the British Physics Olympiad Online Challenge. This is part of a series of challenges and competitions run by the British Physics Olympiad, designed to challenge and extend students’ understanding of Physics and problem solving skills.

Our students did us proud, showing their resilience and reflectiveness to complete a task that is designed to be hard.  We are equally proud of their achievements with two students receiving Gold awards (Patrick Fleming and Alex Twigg), two Silver (Nadia Othman and Eva Bailey), five Bronzes (Alfie Tiltman, Sam Reynard-Robinson, Finlay Mepham, Malachi Bielbi and Jack Hartness) and two commendations (Raj Ghataora and Matthew Holleran) in their assembly this week.

Sixth Form News...

Sixth Form students have been raising money for comic relief today where they took part in 'zorbing' at lunchtime and also had games of ten pin bowling, last one standing and bulldog.  Students also came to school in fancy dress and raised over £200 for the charity.

On 8th March Rossett Sixth Form students celebrated International Women's day with an assembly presentation from Poppy Magill, Pinky Kornlup and Alice Loring.  The students have been working in partnership with the Harrogate and district Soroptimists.  Click here for the full articles and interview with students.

And finally, as part of our weekly form programme in the Sixth Form, 'Feelgood Fridays' sees a wide range of activities run throughout the year. This morning saw the final group games of the inter-form 5-a-side tournament, with Mr West's Year 13 form beating Miss Winterschladen's Year 12 form 1-0 in a close match. Next week's highly anticipated semi-finals will be between 12JLE vs 13RDG and 12NVH vs 13DWT.
