Rossett News Update - 22 March 2019

North Yorkshire Youth Commission

As part of the weekly PSHE and Citizenship programme North Yorkshire Youth Commission have run  a workshop with half of Year 12 students on Wednesday 20 March.

The workshop introduced the North Yorkshire Youth Commission - an exciting initiative in partnership between young people and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan. Its aim is to inform the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner in North Yorkshire, through running consultations and workshops with young people between the ages of 14 and 25. James Porter (Year 13) and Evelyn Richards (Year 11) who are members of the Youth Commission, hosted the workshop to assist in gathering the opinions of young people from the Rossett and Harrogate area.

The workshop focused on how students can keep themselves and their friends safe in society. Students were given the chance to explore their opinions on important issues such as drugs, alcohol, mental health and domestic abuse.

A further workshop with the remaining half of the Year 12 students is to be hosted on  Wednesday 1 May 2019.

Oxbridge Information Workshop

Students from our Year 11 and Rossett Sixth Formers from Year 12 attended an Oxbridge Information Workshop on Wednesday 20 March.  The workshop focused on the application process and interview techniques necessary to succeed in any university application, but specifically for those who wanted to apply to Oxbridge.  The session was led by staff and students from Brasenose College at Oxford and included former Rossett students, Lauren Dolman and Katie Lofthouse.

A Level Geography Field Trip

Geography Field trip 2019Our A Level Geography students returned from a field trip to the Holderness coastline yesterday. The students  spent four days collecting data for their independent investigations,  ranging in subject from the 'Impact of Groynes on Sediment Distribution' to 'How Age Influences our Perception of Place'. The students were reportedly superb -  sieving sand, counting waves, carrying out environmental surveys and (back at the youth hostel)  surprising Mrs Martin and Mrs Strowbridge with their culinary skills! The Sixth Form students also interacted with the general public, politely explaining to those  who showed an interest  what they were doing and showing a  respectful  interest in what local people had to say.

A Level Geography  and Business/Economics Grade Booster Workshops

On Thursday and Friday this week, A Level Geography and Business and Economics students attended Grade Booster Workshops at 'The Light' in Leeds.  The workshops are designed to provide essential revision support to A Level  students as they complete their preparation for their examinations at the end of Year 13.

The intensive Grade Booster workshop format is designed to refine and sharpen key exam technique; build confidence in essential assessment skills; and provide a clear focus and structure for students  to make the most effective use of their remaining revision time prior to the exams in summer 2019.

Students took part in four hours of intensive tuition and received a workshop booklet containing all the session content, extension activities, guidance on exam-board specific exam technique and other essential revision materials designed for students at the end of their A Level  courses.

Maths Challenge

Maths challengeOn Wednesday 20th March four Year 8 and 9 students; Kenneth Burt, Dylan Heywood, Yael Braunstein and Nadia Othman participated in the regional finals of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge held in York. The Rossett Team were superb across the rounds and finished 6th out of the 24 teams competing. "They worked brilliantly as a team, encouraging one another and represented the school admirably in the event", said Miss Reynolds.

The success in this team challenge built upon the successes of the individual intermediate challenge earlier in February. The Year 11 students who entered were awarded, 3 Gold Certificates, 17 Silver Certificates and 10 Bronze Certificates. Katie Merckel achieved Best in Year 11, Lewis Ferry and Charlotte Hull achieved Joint Best in Year 10 and Kenneth Burt achieved Best in Year 9.

Special mention was given to Katie Merckel who scored so highly that she qualified for the 51st UKMT National Summer School. She  has the opportunity to  work with like-minded mathematicians and industry specialists at this event.

Katie Merckel, Laurie O’Brien, Kenneth Burt and Gabriel Rickerby achieved excellent scores and thus qualified for the Pink and Grey Kangaroo; we await their results! This was a successful follow-up to the great start from the more senior mathematicians during the Senior Challenges earlier in the year. Well done to all who participated!
