National Space Academy masterclass

Over the past few weeks our Year 9 and Year 10 students have had the opportunity to take part in a Physics masterclass run by the National Space Academy.  During the project entitled ‘Journey to Comet’ the students looked at the three phases involved in travelling to a comet.  These include the journey to the comet, the rendezvous with the comet and returning through the atmosphere.  During the project the students were asked to take on the roles of shuttle engineer, launch co-ordinator and astro-navigator.   During the first session our budding launch co-ordinators designed and launched a rocket!  In the second session the astro-navigators used Kepler’s third law to study the orbit of a comet and in the final session our shuttle engineers designed and made heat plating to protect astronauts returning to Earth in a shuttle.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved!
