ROSSETT NEWS UPDATE - 31 JANUARY 2020

GCSE Geography Field Trip to York

More than 150 GCSE Geography students took part in a field trip to York over the past week looking at transport sustainability and the environmental impact of flooding.  The students carried out pedestrian and traffic counts and used questionnaires that they had devised to find out the opinions of members of the public.  the data they collected will be presented and analysed back in class in preparation for GCSE paper 3.

The afternoon was spent walking from the Foss barrier along the banks of the River Ouse as far as Clifton Ings to carry out environmental impact surveys.  Students sketched the flood alleviation schemes in place, and will discuss these in more detail during lessons.  The field trip was a great way for students to see for themselves how the environmental and traffic issues that they have studied in class have an effect in real life.

Year 10 iPad Information

We are currently reviewing the Year 10 iPad offer.  Due to recent price increases and changes in the insurance market we are only able to offer a 17 month scheme with a recommended donation of £26 per month for 17 months.  The scheme will include a 7th Generation iPad, case, screen protector and accidental damage and theft insurance.

Please note that if insufficient donations are received the Year 10 refresh may not be viable.  We are also unable to provide an iPad where the previous iPad has been damaged three times or more in the life of the previous scheme. If you are interested in signing up for this replacement scheme please contact ipad@rossettschool.co.uk before the 10th  February so that we may gauge the level of interest.

For those who have completed the previous iPad scheme we will contact you shortly regarding the potential purchase of your current iPad.

L Pepper - pilotCongratulations to Rossett student Lorimer Pepper

Congratulations to Lorimer Pepper (Year 12) who has become the youngest person ever to be awarded his National Personal Pilot's Licence (NPPL) with the British Microlight Association through the Civil Aviation Authority.  Although referred to as microlights because of their size, Lorimer flies a Eurofox, which is classed as a light high-winged aircraft.

He first flew solo in August 2019 just four weeks after starting his training.  As part of his test Lorimer had to demonstrate his ability to fly a microlight through a number of complex manoeuvres that he had learned during training. He has also had to sit written examinations in five subjects:  Meteorology, Navigation, Aviation Law, Human Performance and Limitations and Aircraft Technical subjects and pass an oral examination conducted by a flight examiner.

Lorimer is now training to extend his licence and hopes to start his commercial pilot's licence training when he is eighteen.  We are very proud of his achievements - he is a credit to his family and his school.

Uganda football bootsFootball boots arrive in Uganda

You may remember last summer  Rossett student and his Dad, Joel and Paul Barker, arranged a  collection of  old football boots  and football kit to send to an orphanage in Uganda, which is home to over 400 children.  We are delighted to report that, after some delays and difficulties, the delivery has finally arrived and Paul and Joel have received a picture of thanks from the children at the home.  Congratulations and well done to them both on this marvellous achievement.

Health and Well-being

In addition to the hand washing facilities and hand sanitizer provided in school, we have purchased extra hand sanitizer units to be placed around school for students, staff and visitors to combat the winter bugs, coughs and colds.  These will be available in shared spaces around the school.
