Rossett News Update - 24 June 2022

Year 11 Celebration Assembly

Our Year 11 'Class of 2022' took their last formal GCSE examination on Thursday 23rd June which was followed by a Celebration Assembly with speeches from the Senior Leadership team and their Director of Learning, Mr Bulmer. Awards, voted for by the students, were  presented in a number of categories; shirts were signed; and  students were treated to an 'American style' buffet to mark this milestone.

We would like to wish the class of 2022  the best of luck for the future and we look forward to seeing them this week at the Year 12 Induction Day and on Results' and Next Steps Day.

Sixth Form Taster Day

At Rossett we recognise that the transition from Year 11 to Sixth Form is an important step. Our prospective Rossett Sixth Formers attended our Sixth Form Taster Day today, where they had the opportunity to experience what life will be like in September.   Students had the opportunity to attend a number of 'taster' lessons from a range of established subjects.

To enhance the experience, students were asked to adopt our Sixth Form ‘office dress’ code, and were given the opportunity to sample the Sixth Form facilities and café provision. Sixth Form staff were also  available throughout the day to give advice and to outline both the academic and the wider opportunities available in the Sixth Form.

As a reminder for our parents and students in Year 12, further guidance regarding the UCAS application process can be found by clicking here.

Harrogate bandRossett Students take part in the Harrogate Concert Band

Rossett students Will Gosper, Amber Jamieson and Dan Batty had the privilege and honour of playing percussion in a joint concert with the Harrogate Music Centre Concert Band and the band of the British Grenadier Guards at the Convention Centre last week.

The Band of the British Grenadier Guards were performing straight from their many televised events in London as a part of the musical performances for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Our students did a wonderful job of representing Rossett School at such a prestigious event and the Grenadiers even commented on their wonderful playing, making Mrs Edwards, our fantastic Percussion Teacher, exceptionally proud.

Our students have also achieved some fantastic results in their music examinations recently; well done to:

Nadia Othman  (Year 11) Passed Grade 8 Piano

Eleanor Ashby  (Year 9) Grade 3 Clarinet passed with Merit

Matan Braunstein (Year 9) Grade 2 Clarinet passed with Distinction

Iwan Jenkins (Year 9) Grade 1 Violin passed with Merit

Holly Roberts (Year 8) Grade 3 Violin passed with Merit

Layla Ingles (Year 8) Grade 1 passed with Merit

George Papadopoullos  (Year 11) who achieved an ARSM in Clarinet. ARSM is a performance-focused diploma for learners beyond Grade 8 level which is an outstanding achievement.

Summer Music in the Park - Rossett Concert Band

Rossett Concert Band are performing at 11am on Saturday morning in the Valley Gardens (Harrogate) as part of the Summer 'Music in the Park' event.  The event is free and there will be lots of musical performances throughout the day.

Zak HemmingwayYear 12 Work Experience

Our Year 12 students have been experiencing the world of work this week undertaking varied roles at a variety of settings and gaining skills that will equip them for the world of work.

We were delighted to hear about Zak Hemmingway who has had a fantastic opportunity to work with the Head of Gardens at Dumfries House for his placement. We were pleased to hear that Zak is doing a fantastic job and that the staff  are very pleased with his commitment, enthusiasm and attention to detail in working around the estate.

Zak has been harvesting fruit and vegetables in the education garden, working in the tropical glasshouse and generally helping staff around the estate.

Tom Palmer bookLRC News

This week in the LRC we welcomed award winning children’s author Tom Palmer who came to talk to students, parents and staff about his books, writing, reading for pleasure, Leeds United, Fell Running and much more. This was a wonderful (and very warm!) evening with a packed LRC enjoying the opportunity to meet one of the finest children’s writers at the peak of his powers.

It was also great to welcome Harrogate’s only independent book shop 'Imagined Things' who were selling Tom’s books and it was very encouraging to see a healthy queue and book-signing at the end.

Tom’s simple and very positive messages about reading were clear: reading is fun, it makes you feel better, it is for everyone, you can find many stories about people just like us, all reading is good for you, reading novels and  poetry is great but equally so is reading comics, newspapers, football stories and magazines. Reading is magical, we matter and so do books, libraries and book shops. Read!

My thanks to the student librarians who helped and supported and well done to all those students who attended.

Time BunkerWe have also been made aware of a new young adult novel, The Time Bunker, which is based in Harrogate and Knaresborough.  the story is a time travel adventure featuring a 13-year old boy who is attempting to prevent the death of his father.  The science fiction and time travel novel will be available to pre-order from Amazon and Waterstones and we will hopefully have a copy to share in the LRC soon.

Have a great, and bookish, weekend.

AthleticsHarrogate and Craven Athletics Final

We were delighted that a number of students represented Rossett School yesterday  at the Harrogate and Craven Athletics finals. Our students' were congratulated on their responsibility, resilience and enthusiasm on the day.. The students were competing against sixteen schools from the Harrogate and Craven area and the standard of competitors at this event is always really high.

We saw outstanding performances from Calvin Parkes and Jemima Jackson in Year 7 who both won their events. Calvin ran a phenomenal 12.6 seconds in the 100m. Jemima threw a huge 7.4m in the shot putt.

Other students who performed really well on the day, achieving  lots of personal bests in their chosen events, included:

Jamie Stokoe (Year 9)  - 2nd 800m; Sam Wilson (Year 8) - 3rd javelin; Alfie Lumsden (Year 9) - 4th 200m; Eilidh Owens (Year 9)  - PB 800m; Eleanor Easton (Year 9)  - PB 800m; Chloe Lamb (Year 7) - PB hurdles.  Well done to everyone who took part, we are very proud of your achievements.

MatildaMatilda

We are incredibly excited  that our wonderful actors, musicians and set designers are making a return to the Rossett stage and have been busy rehearsing over the last several weeks.  Our musical production of 'Matilda'  premiers on Thursday 30th June with another performance  on Friday 1 July.  The very last few tickets are on sale now via Scopay and are priced at £6.50 each.  Doors open at 6.30pm on both days and the performance starts at 6.45pm.

Join us for a fantastic evening of live performance - our first musical production post-Covid! We look forward to welcoming you then.

Lunch Menu

We know it is helpful to parents/carers to discuss the following week's lunch menu with their child.  We update  our catering page each week to make this easier to access for all.  Please click HERE for the school lunch menu after half term.

Well done to...

  • Niamh Owens (Year 9) who achieved her best Tennis result to date winning a 16U Grade 4 competition in Bury last weekend. Even more impressive was that Niamh beat the first and second seeds, both ranked significantly higher than her.
  • Mrs Normand (Teacher of MFL) who competed for Scotland in the  Home Nations Hockey Tournament at the weekend.  Mrs Normand and the team now focus on their World Cup preparations (Front Row: third from the left).
  • The U15 Boys' Cricket Team who competed very well against Bradford Grammar School but narrowly missed a win by six runs! Well done to all of the team who displayed great resilience throughout the T20 tournament.
