Rossett News Update - 22 November 2019

Sixth Form Taster Day – Friday 29 November

On Friday 29 November Year 11 students will have the opportunity to sample life in the Sixth Form at Rossett.  During this busy and informative day we will provide students with the opportunity to attend four ‘taster’ lessons from a range of 30 established subjects. In addition to this, they will attend a session giving advice on ‘Life in Sixth Form’. To enhance the experience, students will adhere to the Sixth Form ‘office dress’ code, and be given the opportunity to sample the Sixth Form facilities and cafe provision.

Sixth Form staff will also be available throughout the day to give advice and to outline both the academic and the wider opportunities available in the Sixth Form.  Current Year 12 and 13 students will be engaged in research and study at home on Friday 29 November.

Sixth Form Information Evening - Thursday 5 December

The Sixth Form Information Evening for Year 11 students and parents will be held on Thursday 5 December commencing at 7.00pm with a presentation from the Headteacher in the main hall.  This is a very important evening as the Subject Fair - which takes place in the Sixth Form Centre - will provide detailed information about the courses and enrichment opportunities on offer.  Sixth Form Ambassadors will be available during the evening and parents and students are encouraged to speak to our students about their experience at Rossett.

Jess MedalJudo Champion

Congratulations to Year 7 student, Jessica Mepham, who won a silver medal at the British Judo Minors National Championships 2019 last month.  She also competed, last weekend, in the British Judo Council Closed National Championships and won a gold medal!  She is now the BJC 10-12yr 48-52kg Closed British Champion 2019. All at Rossett are immensely proud of Jessica's achievements in Judo; her success is a  result of her dedication to the sport in the two years since she began her study of the discipline.

Year 7 Skate Park Project

This term, Year 7s have been demonstrating excellent skills when deciding on the site for a proposed skate park in our local area.  This annual project involves a trip out of the classroom and then writing persuasive letters to the local council.  The unit of work was completed with a competition for the best model skate park.  Students were judged on a number of criteria including: security and safety features;  jumps/tricks; the overall design; and additional features such as first aid provision and accessibility.

The winners were:  Caitlin Hill and Jasmine Taylor, Connor Mumford, Emily Porter, Niamh Owens.

Ms Woodcock was so impressed that she awarded extra prizes to Evie-Mae Thompson, Aimee Mitchell and Finlay Burns and Callum Handley for their excellent design.

"I always enjoy judging this particular competition, but this year's entries were beyond our wildest imaginings in creativity, environmental awareness and the sheer number of hours devoted to the build.  Congratulations to all who took part - especially to the parents who acted as unpaid labour, I expect - it was a pleasure to see such carefully designed ideas".

Mock Examinations

All Year 11 and some of our Year 10 students will be completing either 'mock' GCSE examinations or 'mock' assessments in their core and option subjects next week. Students will sit examinations in Science, Maths, English, Geography, History, French, Spanish and some option subjects in the Sports Hall; other option subject exams or assessments will be sat in classrooms during normal lesson times.  Further information has been sent out to all Year 11 and Year 10 parents.  A copy of the information letter can be found here.

Presentation Evening

To recognise the exam success of our (last year's) Year 11 we will be holding our annual Presentation Evening on 28th November 2019. Invitations have been sent out before half term, to invite last year's Year 11s and their guests to a celebration reception followed by the presentation of certificates. We look forward to celebrating their success with them.   Students have been asked to register on line to reserve their seats by Tuesday 19th November 2019:  https://www.rossettschool.co.uk/latest/presentation-evening-28-november-2019/

Learning Resource Centre

The LRC is an important area of the school for study which  can be accessed by teachers and their classes throughout the school day.  Whilst we experience some staff absence, It is currently being manned for Sixth Form study periods 2, 3,4 and 5; during early lunch (12.25-1.10pm) for Years 7, 8 and 9 – when books can be borrowed and returned; and is open to all students after school for Homework Club when books can be borrowed and returned by all students.

Congratulations to...
