Rossett News Update - 22 July 2022

Summer

Watching Rachel Daly (ex-Rossett student) play for the Lionessess in the game against Spain on Tuesday gave everyone in the school a feeling of real pride.  The next game in the Euros is the semi-final to be played at Bramhall Lane, Sheffield on Tuesday July 26th; we will all be supporting the side from here in Harrogate.

The England celebrations contained a rousing chorus of 'Sweet Caroline' which was repeated by the whole school, led ably by Mr West, on our Sports' Day on Wednesday.  Our end of term celebrations, over the last few weeks, have lifted spirits as we look towards well-deserved holiday for our students and their families and our staff. We look forward to welcoming all students back in September.

Celebration Assemblies

Throughout this week, students from all year groups have attended celebration assemblies with Ms Woodcock and their Director of Learning focussing on their wonderful achievements this year.  Director of Learning awards were presented for Attainment, Community, 3Rs' and Conduct and  Mr Royles  led a prize draw for Classchart points and attendance.  Well done to all of the worthy winners of the prizes and awards.

These assemblies were used to  launch our Rossett Golden Jubilee Year, outlining lots of events and celebrations to mark this milestone - look out for more on this in September!

Curriculum Overview

At Rossett, we have been developing and re-forming our curriculum during the last two years to ensure  that the most powerful knowledge available in each subject area is taught to your child. We are passionate about “Success for Everyone” and we firmly believe that our curriculum ensures this by being broad, balanced and diverse.

We have created an overview of the entire curriculum from Y7 → Y13. The document itself is large, but can be zoomed in upon any device, tablet or computer. It is helpful to read this information if you are a parent as it will inform any discussions about what your child is currently learning; equally, it will ensure that you feel more empowered to support your child in the full knowledge of what they are studying at each stage of the academic year.

We invite you to browse this overview to gain a full understanding of the academic and vocational excellence on offer here at Rossett School and to provide your child with a ‘head start’ . In advance of the next academic year, should you wish to do any summer reading or advance preparation for any subjects, particularly at KS4 and KS5 please read this summary.  Please click  here to view the document.

Year 12 Biology trip to Runswick Bay

The Year 12 Biologists completed their final practical of the year at Runswick Bay recently. In spite of the unseasonably poor weather, all students showed resilience and worked together as a team to gather some great results which they have statistically analysed this week. The students move into Year 13 with a solid grounding in their practical skills thanks to their hard work this year.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award

Twenty eight of our Year 10 and Year 11 students ventured out into the hottest weekend of the year so far to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. They started the twenty five mile journey in Wath and walked down the river, over the moorland and through woodland before camping next to Thruscross reservoir. All students were awake and ready before 6.00am to beat the gruelling heat of the day. In spite of the heat, students arrived back in Hampsthwaite in high spirits and fulfilled from the weekend of walking. Well done to all students, we are very proud of your achievements!

Sports' Day 2022

On Wednesday we saw the return of our annual Sports' Day; the first since 2019 and thankfully  there was a welcome return to some much-needed cooler weather! As always, the students demonstrated our Rossett School core 3Rs' values with many exceptional performances. Very  well done to all students for taking part and a particular congratulations to form groups 7SHN, 8ECS, 9CPS and 10MWN who were crowned overall champions for each year group.

School Uniform Expectations: A Reminder

I would like to reinforce our expectations regarding school uniform before the start of the new academic year.  Please note the following:

  • Blazers are mandatory for all students in Years 7-11 and are available from Rawcliffes, Harrogate.
  • School sweatshirts  only, can be worn underneath a blazer.
  • Only 'traditional' tailored, style trousers are allowed - leggings/jeggings or similar are not acceptable.
  • Ties must be worn at all times and are available from Rawcliffes.
  • Shoes should be traditional and black; trainers of any sort are not allowed.

Please note that good quality second hand uniform is available from the school via Rossett PTA.

Should a student be seen wearing incorrect uniform in September, they will be challenged, sanctioned and may well be asked to return home, if appropriate.  I would ask that you use the details on the website here to check our information. Any parent who is unclear about what is acceptable is encouraged to contact the school before making any purchase.

Farewell to staff...

We have recognised the contribution of  staff moving on from Rossett this year with special thanks to some of our long-standing pastoral staff:  Mr Davies (Director of Behaviour Support and Teacher of Science); Mrs Reynolds; Mrs Banyard and Mrs Russell.

Special thanks also go to Mr Sweetman (Teacher of PE and Director of Learning: Year 10) for his  twenty seven years of service to the school.  Mr Sweetman retires today and we thank him for his contribution to sport and to our pastoral team.  Mr Sweetman celebrated his retirement with a staff football match with ex-Rossett staff and students including Robbie Gotts (Leeds Utd) who came along to join in.

WellbeingMental Health and Wellbeing

We would like to remind you of the support groups, websites and text-based helplines that exist to help our students combat any feelings of anxiety. We know that many students continue to have some concerns about their future,  or suffer more general anxiety over the extended holiday period.

The Go-To – www.thegoto.org.uk – is a portal or ‘single point of information’ for the wide range of mental health support services available to help children and young people in the county address their social and emotional health needs.
