Rossett News Update - 17 June 2022

UCASYear 12 UCAS Exhibition

Today, our students in Year 12 attended the West and North Yorkshire UCAS Exhibition at Leeds Beckett University.   Students had the chance to explore and meet universities, colleges and employers face-to-face.  They also had the opportunity to attend live application clinics and personal statement workshops.  A chance to speak to and question current students were also available and, despite the warm weather, the students enjoyed the day and found it very beneficial for their progression planning.  Mr Keyworth (Head of Sixth Form) commented on the benefit to Rossett students of this type of trip "trips such as these help crystallise future plans and ambitions, and allow the Sixth Form team to mentor each individual in how to get to their desired destination".

Year 10 'Futures Day'

On Tuesday 21st June our Year 10 students will take part in a fun and informative 'drop down' curriculum day  encouraging them to consider their future options as they will soon be commencing  their Year 11 studies.   There will an introduction to the day from Mr Royles (Deputy Headteacher) followed by presentations from Mr Keyworth (Head of Sixth Form) and a representative from Harrogate College to explore the different pathways and qualification routes they need to know about for the careers they are interested in.

The day will focus on problem solving and teamwork skills along with virtual work experience and interview skills activities - everything future employers will be looking for. Students should wear normal uniform and will have the opportunity to purchase their food from the Sixth Form café at break and lunchtime.

Year 11 Celebration

Thursday 23rd June sees the final exam of the year for our Year 11 students.  Following the last exam, students will be welcomed to the Main Hall for speeches, awards, lunch and signing of year books.  Students will then leave the school site by 12.15 by the Sports' Centre gate.

Reminder: Sixth Form Taster Day - Friday 24th June

Our new Rossett Sixth Formers (only recently, Year 11!) will attend a Sixth Form Taster Day on Friday 24th June. Students will have a 'taste' of their chosen option subjects, as well and utilising the Sixth Form facilities.  All Year 11 students who have accepted a place at Rossett Sixth Form next year are expected to attend from 8.50am onwards in smart business dress.

MatildaMatilda

We are incredibly excited to let you know that our wonderful actors, musicians and set designers are making a return to the Rossett stage and have been busy rehearsing over the last several weeks.  Our musical production of 'Matilda'  premiers on Thursday 30th June with another performance  on Friday 1 July.  Tickets are on sale now via Scopay and are priced at £6.50 each.

Join us for a fantastic evening of live performance - our first musical production post-Covid! We look forward to welcoming you then.

Tom Palmer 2LRC News

I would like to remind parents/carers of  students in Year 7 and Year 8 that award winning author Tom Palmer is visiting Rossett on  Wednesday 22nd June at 5.30 pm.  If you and your child would like to attend please email me at SAsker@rossettschool.co.uk .  Fantastic, independent book retailer, 'Imagined Things' bookshop, Harrogate will also be attendance, selling Tom’s books. A signed copy and a 'selfie' will add to a memorable evening, I am sure!

Two stories caught my eye this week, one from home and one from further away, which are another welcome reminder of the power of libraries and books in helping to shape young people’s lives.

As Cressida Cowell ends her very successful time as the Children’s Laureate the report from her Life Changing Libraries Campaign can be found here. The work done in six pilot schools in the United Kingdom confirm, yet again, the transformative effect that school libraries have on children’s progress and happiness.  Simply put, Libraries change lives for the better.  They matter and every student deserves access to them.

Further afield in South Africa this story here   about getting books in to the hands of disadvantaged children is incredibly influential and encouraging.  The idea of writing a book in a day and then directly putting it into children’s hands and minds is very powerful.

I end where I began in encouraging parents of students in Year 7 and 8 to attend the Tom Palmer event next week and I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Have a great, and bookish, weekend.

Mr Asker (LRC)
