Parent/Carers – How can you support your children?

How can you support your children?

As a parent or carer, you are likely to be the single biggest influence on your child’s thoughts and feelings about their future career. So, how can you help your child to make decisions that will affect their future career pathways?

  • Have a good general understanding of the options available
  • Listen carefully to your child’s views without being judgemental or critical
  • Be open to new ideas and possibilities
  • Encourage your child to explore all their options

In what ways can you help your child with their career planning?

  • Talk to your child about possible careers they might be interested in and why they appeal?
  • Ask your child what careers related activities they have done in school, either in lessons or in their own time – such a visiting the careers section in the Learning Resource Centre.
  • Encourage them to find out about the occupations or past careers of older family members and other adults they know, so that they can learn about different career experiences and develop their own network.
  • Investigate the careers websites and further information sources identified for students and parents from this website. You can browse a lot of this material as a parent, but you could also work together with your child to explore the options available. (You may even want to use this material for yourself!)
  • Help your child to explore the possible employers, apprenticeship providers and further education courses available in your local area and beyond.
  • If possible, take your child to open days and evenings (at colleges and training organisations) and careers fairs held locally.
  • Take advantage of the opportunity to gather useful information and broaden your child’s career thinking by speaking to the careers advisor who attends parent’s evenings.
  • Encourage your child to seek advice from the careers advisor when necessary.
  • Encourage your child to participate in out of school activities. These are valuable in themselves, but will help greatly later on in giving a good impression to people like employers and course tutors.

Can you support your child and others through our Careers Programme?

We are always looking for parents, alumni, employers and businesses to support our careers programme in a variety of ways. This could be through volunteering to talk to our students or to be on a stand at our careers fairs.

Please contact Mrs Daly (email: Careers@rossettschool.co.uk) if you would like further information.
