Rossett News Update - 14 June 2019

Date changeNational Change to May Bank Holiday 2020

Please note that there has been a change to our 2019-20 school calendar as the Government announced last weekend that the early May Bank Holiday next year will be moved back by four days to Friday 8 May 2020 to allow it to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.  A copy of the amended school calendar can be found here.

UKMT Junior Maths Challenge

Over recent months our students have, once again been taking part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.   Over 270,000 students across the UK sat the challenge with approximately the top 6% receiving the Gold certificate; 13% the Silver certificate; and  21% the Bronze certificate. The top 3% are invited to sit a follow-up competition. This year Patrick Fleming, Yael Braunstein, Nadia Othman and Eva  Bailey (all in Year 8) and Arlo Collins (in Year 7)  qualified for the Junior Kangaroo 2019. Rossett achieved 7 golds, 10 silvers and 21 bronze certificates in this year’s challenge. Well done to all those who took part.

Chartered Teacher Status

chartered teacher status 2We are delighted to celebrate the achievement of members of our Rossett teaching staff who have gained Accredited Teacher Status. We were the first school in the area to sign up for the pilot scheme introduced by the Chartered College of Teaching to allow outstanding teachers to progress further.  The national scheme was introduced to recognise the knowledge, skills and behaviours of excellent teachers, highlighting the importance of their expertise in supporting the learning of children and young people and representing the first step in the development of a career pathway focused on amazing classroom practice, rather than the accreditation route.

The Award consisted of carrying out a series of classroom-based research projects as well as undertaking a series of assessments conducted on formal assessment days at Sheffield Hallam University and  UCL in London . As a result of successfully obtaining Chartered Teacher Status, the staff  gained a deeper understanding of teaching, learning and assessment and how to better incorporate their current academic research into our lessons at Rossett. In the future, our investment in the Chartered Teacher Programme,  will lead to longer-term changes in approach to teaching, learning and assessment across the whole school.

Congratulations and well done to Miss Veitch, Dr Reed and Mr Bruce-Halliwell.

Year 9 and Year 10 Assessments will take place week commencing 24th June - most examinations will take place in the Sports Hall, although some option subjects will be taken in normal lesson time.  Detailed information has been sent to parents of Y9 and Y10 students this week with revision guidance and a copy of this information can be found here. The results of these examinations will be shared with you, as parents.  Attendance at these examinations is essential as the results are used to refine groupings/sets for September.

Football boots 2Football Boot Donations

Inspired by Rossett student Joel Barker in last week's Rossett News, we are helping this brilliant cause by asking for donations of unwanted football boots.  A shipment has been arranged for next weekend so please have a look at home for any unwanted boots and send them in to school next week.  There will be a collection box in Student Reception. Please send boots in a bag with their laces tied together.  Let's see how many we can collect for Joel and his Dad to send to the orphanage in Uganda!

Year 8 Summer Spectacular Concert – Wednesday 19 June, 6:30pm - Royal Hall, Harrogate

Our students in Year 8 have spent recent weeks learning songs in preparation for our annual Summer Spectacular Concert which is being held at the Royal Hall on Wednesday 19 June. This event, in such a prestigious and grand venue, is always a huge success and we are hoping to raise the roof yet again. The concert will feature all of our musical ensembles as well as performances from two of our partner music schools-  Pannal and Saltergate Primaries -  plus a massed choir of Year 8 students. Don't miss this fantastic performance!

A limited number of tickets are still available and can be obtained by calling the box office 01423 502116 or by visiting the website http://www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk.   Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

Congratulations to...

  • Issy Smith (Year 10) who has been selected to represent North Yorkshire in the triple jump at the English Schools' Athletics competition on 12th and 13th July in Birmingham - only 40 students are selected from all of the schools in North Yorkshire, so this is a fantastic achievement!   • Jack Medcalf (Year 7), Lola Banister (Year 8) and Mia Hutchings (Year 8) who performed in the first Schools' Gymnastics Competition this week and scored highly in the floor and vault.  Well done to everyone who took part;
