Rossett News - 9 November 2018

Remembrance Day

PoppyAssemblies have been held this week for each year group to remind students that the freedoms we enjoy today are as a result of the sacrifices made by those we remember at this time of year.  The school recognises the importance of passing this message on to our students to ensure they understand the significance of Remembrance as we expect them to carry this responsibility into the future.

This year, the focus has been on Danny Boyle’s ‘Pages of the Sea’ commemorations, marking 100 years’ since Armistice and the end of the First World War. Communities around the UK and Ireland will gather on beaches to say, ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to famous and less-well known faces from the conflict. Students have been encouraged to visit the website to find someone who shares their surname to say ‘goodbye’ to as part of this national project.  More information can be found here https://www.pagesofthesea.org.uk/WW1 Centenary

The whole school will join together on Monday to mark Armistice Day with the playing of the Last Post followed by a two-minute silence and ending with the ‘Reveille’.

We will also be taking a group of students to a community act of remembrance at Christ Church, Harrogate on Thursday 15 November.  The remembrance service will include a narrative of some of the events of WW1 with letters and poems written at the time, read by the students from a number of secondary schools. The event will also include some WW1 songs. At the end of the service there will be an act of remembrance with The Last Post, two minutes' silence and Reveille.

Children in Need – Friday 16 November

PudseyBBC Children in Need is back! On Friday 16 November students will be joining in with this national charity in our non-uniform day with a donation of £2.  Children in Need raises money for disadvantaged children across the UK and we would like to make this year our best fundraising total to date – the more students donate and take part in activities, the more we will raise! Thank you in advance for your support.

Drug Awareness Evening – Wednesday 14 November

As a school, we are committed to providing our students with opportunities to learn the skills they need for a happy, healthy life. This includes essential drug and alcohol education and advice, which is appropriate for their age group.  Whilst pastoral education is very important, a consistent approach from home and school, working in partnership, is essential to educate our young people to make the right choices. We would therefore like to invite all parents/carers to a Drug Awareness Evening on Wednesday 14 November 2018 from 7.00pm to 8.45 pm, in the Sixth Form Centre (parking will be available in the Sports' Centre car park and overflow parking at the back of the school, only).

The workshop will be delivered by representatives from North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council’s Prevention Service and Youth Justice Service, and the Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust 'Healthy Child' Team.

The workshop will provide:

  • Practical, up-to-date information about alcohol and drugs including cannabis, cocaine, MDMA and New Psychoactive Substances (previously known as ‘legal highs’).
  • Information on the legal, health and social risks of substance misuse.
  • Information on the local situation regarding drug and alcohol use.
  • Useful tips on how to talk about this sensitive subject at home.
  • Details of where to go for additional information and support.
  • A question and answer session for parents to learn more.

If you would like to attend, please follow the link to register as places are limited.

New Website

Yesterday saw the launch of the new Rossett School website.  We know you will find this re-designed portal much more user-friendly and easier to navigate. It has quick links to our most commonly-used pages.  Please take a few minutes to have a look - we hope you enjoy using the new site!  If you have any feedback please email tmilner@rossettschool by Friday 23 November.

Bewerley Park

We are delighted to be able to offer our 'new' Year 7 students the opportunity to attend an outdoor pursuit course at Bewerley Park Outdoor Centre in the Yorkshire Dales.  This will include activities such as mountain biking, ghyll scrambling, climbing, canoeing and orienteering (full details will be confirmed nearer the date).  We run this trip every year and it is an excellent opportunity for students to experience team-led activities and learn new skills.  The main aim of the visit is to inspire younger students to remain fit and active; to consider the DofE scheme in Year 9; and to increase their own personal confidence.

There are a maximum of 80 places available on the course and if you would like your child to be considered for the trip please return the slip on the letter here to the Finance Office by Friday 16 November. The cost is £335 and an application can only be accepted on receipt of a deposit of £100 (cheques should be made payable to Rossett Green Charity with the name and form of your child written clearly on the back).

Presentation Evening – 29 November 2018

This week invitations have been sent out to our last year’s Year 11 students inviting them to Rossett’s annual Presentation Evening on 29 November 2018.  The evening will commence with a Celebration Reception from 6.30pm.

Due to the popularity of this event Year 11 students may apply for a maximum of three tickets (covering the student plus two guests).  To reserve seats please register here by Tuesday 20 November 2018.

PTA Meeting - Tuesday 13 November, 7.15pm Rossett School

Support your PTA! All parents/carers are invited to attend a PTA meeting on Tuesday 13 November at 7.15pm in school.  The PTA has raised substantial funds over the years which have been used to assist the school to purchase a wide range of equipment, all of which have been of enormous assistance to our students, not only in their education but in supporting their interests and activities.  If you can support the PTA but are unable to attend the meeting please contact Mrs Daly, Assoicate Assistant Headteacher at sdaly@rossettschool.co.uk.

iMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YEAR 11 PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Sixth Form Taster Day – Friday 30 November

On Friday 30 November, Year 11 students will have the opportunity to sample life in the Sixth Form at Rossett.  During this busy and informative day will provide students with the opportunity to attend four ‘taster’ lessons from a range of 30 established subjects. In addition to this, they will attend a session giving advice on their fourth option e.g. EPQ. To enhance the experience, students will adhere to the Sixth Form ‘office dress’ code, and be given the opportunity to sample the Sixth Form facilities and deli.

Sixth Form staff will also be available throughout the day to give advice and to outline both the academic and the wider opportunities available in the Sixth Form.  Current Year 12 and 13 students will be engaged in research and study at home on Friday 30 November.

Sixth Form Information Evening - Thursday 6 December

The Sixth Form Information Evening for Year 11 students and parents will be held on Thursday 6 December 2018 commencing at 7pm with a presentation from the Headteacher in the main hall.  This is a very important evening as the Subject Fair – which takes place in the Sixth Form Centre – will provide detailed information about the courses and enrichment opportunities on offer.  Sixth Form Ambassadors will be available during the evening and parents are encouraged to speak to them about their experience at Rossett.
