Auschwitz Project – Reported by Imogen Fisher and Matthew Girven (Year 12)

‘Recently we were given the opportunity to participate in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project. Through this project we listened to Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke speak before we went on a one day trip to Poland to visit Oświęcim, which is a Polish town located near the Auschwitz camps, before visiting Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II -Birkenau. We both found the project an extremely moving experience, and were especially moved by the collection of personal belongings including suitcases and shoes at Auschwitz I, as well as the vast size of Auschwitz-Birkenau. As part of this project we are now educating others about the Holocaust and our experience and have been doing question and answer sessions in Year 8 history lessons. We also had the opportunity to go on BBC Radio York to share our experience with the wider community. We are grateful to Rossett and the History Department for allowing us to participate in this process and have found it an extremely moving and valuable experience.’
