Identity, Diversity & Equality

At Rossett we have worked hard to establish a caring and cohesive community where difference is not ‘tolerated’ but celebrated. We are really proud of our successful work to tackle homophobia and other forms of discrimination. We have secured a safe and caring environment which promotes students’ achievements, confidence and self-esteem. We encourage a wide range of activities which promote effective PSHE and citizenship education and are especially pleased to have been granted the prestigious Stephen Lawrence Award – the only school on North Yorkshire to have done so.

Stephen Lawrence Award

The Stephen Lawrence Education Standard was developed in partnership between Education Leeds, the Leeds City Council and Black and Minority community representatives, in response to the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the MacPherson Inquiry Report. Launched in 2003, the Standard evolved from a competitive award established in 2000 and was the first of its kind in the country. It aims to promote equality in its broadest sense among young people, and to recognise good practice in schools. Rossett School was chosen as a pilot school for the Award in North Yorkshire; we have an excellent reputation in the county for inclusive practice, and are recognised as a school with an ethos that reflects equality in its broadest sense.

We were delighted to learn in June 2011 that we had achieved the Stephen Lawrence Award at Level 2.
