Sociology is offered at AS and A2 and provides students with an insight in to key aspects of modern day society.
The AS level course begins with an “Introduction to Sociology” explaining what sociology is and how sociological theory is used to explain socialbehaviour. During the course students will be encouraged to investigate current issues in the newsand apply sociological ideas to understand theirsignificance. Key topics covered at AS are Wealth, Poverty and Welfare, the Education with ResearchMethods.
The A2 units followed in the AQA specification are Global Development and Crime and Deviance withTheory and Methods. The course is assessed by written examinations in June of each year.
No prior knowledge of Sociology is required, but excellent English skills and a grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics will make the course more accessible. It is crucial that any pupil wishing to take Sociology is eager to learn about how and why society functions in the ways it does.
