What will my child be studying?

The English department at Rossett School have created a new, fun and engaging curriculum for pupils in years seven, eight and nine which will provide vital links to the new GCSE specifications.  This will focus around three core texts and will thematically link other skills, such as analysing poetry and reading pre-twentieth literature.

Throughout their key stage three career, pupils will study a vast range of novels, plays, poems, nonfiction texts and Shakespearean snippets in order to help them move smoothly from key stage two, whilst giving them the skills they will need to achieve at key stage four.

To support students’ literacy skills, it is policy in English to begin each lesson with a grammar/spelling focused starter/activity and these skills will be assessed, and built upon, as pupils progress through their education.

Students will also have opportunities throughout each term to use the library during their English lessons the to read, complete book quizzes and take out new books.  It will also enable the department to monitor students more easily.

A plethora of opportunities for pupils to use and enhance their literacy and English skills awaits all key stage three students at Rossett. From participating and competing as part of the debating team, to making a pen pal with a child thousands of miles away in Nepal, pupils at Rossett are never short of ways to develop their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.

Very quickly at the start of Year 7 students are enrolled on the ‘Accelerated Reading’ programme. This enables students to choose a reading book that is matched to their ability. We encourage 25 minutes of reading every day. We value reading so much here at Rossett that reading time is built in to our school day. It takes place during period one in week one, then period two in week two and so on. It doesn’t matter what the subject private reading will take place.

The ipad is a fantastic resource to use with ‘Accelerated Reading’ as students can take short tests on line after each book to monitor their progress. It records all of the books that are completed on a virtual bookshelf and even counts every single word that students read!

What equipment will my child need?

As well as the usual stationary equipment, a child studying English at Rossett should have access to an iPad with the iBooks app downloaded. This will be useful as it will enable pupils to access free iBooks and so develop their reading skills. Likewise it is expected that all pupils in years seven and eight come to every lesson with their accelerated reading book.

How can I support my child through key stage three English?

To enable your child to succeed, ensuring your child completes their homework to the best of their ability would be greatly beneficial. As a school, we use COW time (check our work) and DIRT (dedicated independent reflection time) to promote responsibility and enhance proofreading skills. If these skills were promoted outside the classroom too, the benefit for the pupil would be tenfold.

Additionally, as we are part of the accelerated reading scheme, encouragement to read their accelerated reading book for at least twenty minutes a day would be further enhance key literacy skills.

We intend to develop the Accelerated Reading programme in the Autumn term so that parents can access their child’s reading record from home.

How will my child be assessed in key stage three English?

Pupils will be formally assessed on their reading and writing skills every term, alongside a speaking and listening assessment. This will take place during lessons and your child will be equipped with the knowledge of what is needed to achieve their target level.

What will my child be studying?

English Language and English Literature GCSE-Linear course

In English we are pleased to offer all students experience of literature and language at GCSE across a two-year linear course. Within our current GCSE, controlled assessments will only remain part of our curriculum for the current Year 10 and 11. Those students currently in Year 9 will study a course that is 100% exam-based beginning in 2015.

NB-controlled assessment tasks are stipulated by the exam board and are completed after teaching and support in lessons. The assessments are completed in exam conditions in the classroom over a number of lessons.

English Language controlled assessments: spoken language (response to spoken transcript), extended reading (response to text which could be a cross-over literature text e.g. ‘Of Mice and Men’), 2 pieces of creative writing,

English Literature controlled assessment: Shakespeare comparison (compare key scenes from a Shakespeare play with literary heritage poetry) 25%

Exams:

English Language
Non-fiction reading (answer four questions linked to 2/3 non-fiction texts) and writing (two writing tasks)

English Literature
Unit 1 (1 hour 30 mins) 40%
In Section A students answer one question relating to  modern texts such as ‘Lord of the Flies’/’An Inspector Calls’/’Sunlight on the Grass’ (short stories) In Section B students respond to one question linked  to prose from a different culture. This could be’Of Mice and Men’ or ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.

Unit 2 (1 hour 15 mins) 35%

In Section A students complete one question (45 mins) that compares two poems from a selection studied in class from ‘Moon on the Tides’.

In Section B students complete a response  to an unseen poem (30mins).

As a faculty we spend two years teaching the skills and content that will support and enthuse students through a range of engaging lessons and activities. We provide helpful support and feedback to help students become responsible learners.

 What equipment will my child need?

In terms of equipment, we supply any class novels or texts but students are welcome to purchase their own if they want to annotate or personalise them.

How can I support my child through key stage three English?

As English Language is skills-based, it is crucial that students experience a range of reading and writing. We encourage students to read outside of school, be it a newspaper or a novel.
