Rossett News Update – 19 May 2017

U14 National Cup Final

Minutes before the U14 girls were about to go on to the pitch to play in the National Cup Final Mr Sweetman was taken to one side and informed that the match was being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.  This was very disappointing to all concerned but, for the safety of the players, was the right decision and we are waiting to hear the re-scheduled date.

The Mayor visits Rossett

On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Harrogate to Rossett.  He gave a very informative assembly to Year 8 students detailing the history of Harrogate Borough Council, how the Council system works, and the roles and responsibilities of the Lord Mayor.  This fed into our recent Citizenship lessons on Local Government and The Role of the Council.  He also met with our U14s girls’ football team to wish them luck in the Cup Final!

Mock General Election

On Wednesday 7 June Rossett students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 will be taking part in a mock General Election, as part of the school’s Citizenship Programme. It is being led by the Rossett Politics Club, and coordinated by PSHCE Coordinator Mr Blackburn.

The main political parties will be represented (subject to demand) and speeches and videos will be produced which will be shown to students across the school on the day during their PSHCE lessons which will have a General Election focus.   Students will then collect their polling cards, and make their way to one of the school Polling Stations in order to cast their ballot. Following the closing of the polls, the Politics Club students will take part in a ‘live counting of the votes’ followed by the official declaration of results, which will take place at lunch time.

Summer Spectacular Concert

The Summer Spectacular is our final concert of the season and is being held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 21 June at the Royal Hall, Harrogate.  The concert will feature all of our musical ensembles as well as performances from two of our partner primaries, Pannal and Saltergate, plus a massed choir of Year 8 students.

Tickets will be on sale shortly and can be obtained by calling the box office 01423 502116 or by visiting the website http://www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk.   Tickets are priced at £8 for adults and £5 for concessions.  All the seats are numbered so please book early to avoid disappointment.

We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a very enjoyable evening.

American Exchange

We are currently offering Year 8 students the opportunity to take part in the American Exchange which is celebrating its thirtieth year.  The exchange includes a two week trip to Maine in October 2017 where students stay with an American family and experience everything that Maine has to offer.  The American students come over to stay with their exchange partners the following Easter.  Please click the link for further details.

Social Inclusion Cake Sale

Students undertaking the Prince’s Trust Achieve Award are organising a Social Inclusion Bake Sale next Friday 26 May at break time in R5.  Funds raised will go towards summer and autumn plants for the Sensory Garden.  Please send your children in with money to buy cakes!

Ramadan

As Ramadan approaches I would like to confirm the schools commitment to work with our Muslim students and their families during this time and would ask that parents contact their child’s year office so that we can support our students in their religious observance during both usual school time and examinations.

Support for Families

In addition to our strong pastoral programme at Rossett, we occasionally provide links for parents/carers to commercially produced material to support our key messages.  Below is a link to a hard-hitting ITV promotional video with an anti-bullying message.  It is designed for parents/carers to watch with their children and encourages open discussion of issues at home.
