Rossett News Update – 13 July 2018
Annual Summer Building Work
You may have noticed that preparations have already started for our summer building works. For the fourth year running we were successful in our applications for CIF (Conditions Improvement Fund) bids from the ESFA (Education & Skills Funding Agency) and will be undertaking the following works:
- Significant building condition refurbishment of the Sports block.
- Upgrade of the existing power supply – much of the system is original and therefore over 40 years old and our current electrical demand is running significantly beyond its 220kVA capacity. This work will mean that the school will be completely closed for the first two weeks of the holidays as there will be no power.
Last Thursday five Y8 students competed in the inaugural North Yorkshire Spelling Bee competition. I am delighted to report that, following a nail-biting final, the team claimed first place as the North Yorkshire School Team spelling champions. Congratulations to:
Will Hicks (Captain)
There was further success in the individual spelling competition with Zain Punnu claiming 1st place and Alvie O’Brien coming 3rd. We are very proud of all the boys – they were a credit to themselves, their families and the school. I would also like to thank Mrs Tolliday and Miss Mann for coaching the boys.
Year 6 Induction Days
We welcomed Year 6 pupils from over 40 feeder schools this week. They took part in a variety of activities and lessons which enabled them to get to know Rossett better, meet some staff and make new friends. We were very impressed with their positive attitude. We look forward to welcoming the students and their families to the Family Learning Day this Saturday when they have the opportunity to experience further lessons at Rossett.
PSHE timetable days
On Wednesday students enjoyed a variety of differently timetabled days:
Year 7: Risk Prevention Day – students looked at home, school and personal safety and First Aid including a practical session on life saving.
Year 8: Reality check/Financial Awareness – the day offered students the opportunity to participate in workshops and simulations of working life.
Year 9: Sexual Awareness – students considered methods of contraception, how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and they also learnt about sex and the law and specifically informed consent.
Year 10: Personal Safety Day – students looked at a variety of subjects including online safety, fire safety, emotional wellbeing, homelessness and mental health.
‘Who Do We Think We Are’ Day
Today our Year 7s have experienced a whole range of activities looking at identity and how we are all diverse, original and unique members of the community. They have had cultural experiences; looked at faiths around the world; practised yoga; and danced their way to the end of the day.
Year 10 Employers’ Conference
Our Year 10s participated in an Employers’ Conference today with over thirty local and national employers, along with representatives from Further and Higher educational establishments visiting the school. There were keynote speakers during the day and our students arrived in school dressed in business attire to take part in individual mock interviews. Our visitors were very impressed with the students.
On Monday our students studying Level 2 Hospitality and Catering course were given the opportunity to visit Rudding Park to experience the range of catering environments across the five eateries at the hotel. The visit also offered a valuable insight in to how the industry works on a day to day basis and students learnt about the employment opportunities at Rudding and what personal qualities and experience the hotel looks for in an employee. Students found it an engaging and inspiring morning and gained some valuable knowledge which should benefit them in the future.
Sixth Form Chemistry Conference 13 July
Year 12 students will be visiting the University of York chemistry Conference this week. This is an excellent opportunity for those considering going on to study Chemistry after their A Levels and will include:
A lecture on cutting edge Chemistry led by a researcher from the university
Participation in a molecular modelling seminar
Practical work in the university teaching labs
Advice on chemistry graduate career opportunities
We are delighted to be running Rossett’s first ever STEMinars – all students are encouraged to attend seminars ranging from Quantum mechanics to Sports Psychology.
DofE Gold expedition
This Friday six Year 12 students travel to the Isle of Arron with Mrs Jackson and Mr Wolfram to take part in their DofE Gold expedition. On Saturday they will be sea kayaking in Lamlash Bay at the Arran Outdoor Centre with their instructors before beginning their final expedition on Sunday and will return to school next Thursday. They are looking forward to a very successful and enjoyable expedition!
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award
Congratulations to all our students who completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award last weekend. The students walked south from Wath camping at Breaks Fold Farm near Thruscross Reservoir before finishing in Hampsthwaite on Sunday afternoon. They all showed true resilience and determination and completed their routes despite the very high temperatures – we are very proud of their achievement.
Congratulations to …
- the Year 7 cricket team who beat South Craven last week by fifty runs to reach the final of the County eight aside Final. Jack Hudson and Charlie Greenwood were outstanding but it was a real team performance.
