Sixth Form Chemistry Conference 13 July

Year 12 students will be visiting the University of York Chemistry Conference this week.  Students will be attending a lecture on cutting edge Chemistry led by a researcher from the university, participate in a molecular modelling seminar, take part in some practical work in the university teaching labs and learn about career opportunities for chemistry graduates.

Year 6 Induction Days: possible change of date for parents’ evening

Next week we are looking forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students who will be joining us in September.  They will spend Wednesday and Thursday in school experiencing lessons and break times, meeting staff and other students as well as a variety of other activities.

We are also holding a Parents’ Evening for all our new parents on Wednesday 11 July. Although, in support of our national team, the Parents’ Evening will change to Thursday 12 July should England Win on Saturday and get through to the Semi Finals as these are due to be held on the Wednesday.

Next Wednesday students will take part in a variety of timetabled events instead of their usual lessons:

Year 7: Risk Prevention Day – students look at home, school and personal safety and health including a practical session on First Aid.

Year 8: The Real Game – in this deconstructed day the students are offered the opportunity to participate in simulations of working life.

Year 9: Sexual Awareness – students consider methods of contraception, how to protect against sexually transmitted diseases and sex and the law.

Year 10: Personal Safety Day – including a demonstration of how road traffic accidents are dealt with, from the fire service. This event makes it clear how to stay safe on a bike or in a car.

On Friday the following events take place:

Year 7 ‘Who Do We Think We Are’ – students will celebrate diversity and culture within British Society and beyond.  Students will take part in a range of activities and therefore will not be required to wear school uniform but should wear loose fitting clothing suitable for physical activity/practical workshops (ie no shorts/skirts or low cut tops).

Year 10 Employers Conference – over thirty local and national employers will be in school giving talks to the Year 10s and offering all of our students the opportunity to take part in mock interviews.

Leeds University of Law Enterprise Day

Congratulations to Luca Lenahan, Sam Cliff and Meg Lazenby (Year 10) who won a recent ‘getting into business’ enterprise day at Leeds University of Law.  They took part in workshops throughout the day and were given the task of designing and marketing a brand and presenting their idea to a panel of tutors. The prize is a week-long work experience at a local law firm.

Year 12 Induction Day

On Wednesday, Year 11 students returning to Year 12 had a further ‘taste’ of the academic demand of the lessons they will be taking in September.  We were very impressed with the approach and attitude of the students and look forward to welcoming them back in September.

Sports Day

We had yet another successful Sports Day on Tuesday and the day was re-structured to include ‘retro’ sports, tug of war and rounders.  This allowed participation from the whole year group, as well as the usual track and field events, and was a great success.

Information from Yorkshire Water – road access

Yorkshire Water have confirmed that Phase 1 of their project to lay a new water pipe on Otley Road to Beckwithshaw has been completed.  Phase 2 will start in the next few days to continue the pipe from just west of the entrance to Harlow Carr towards Beckwithshaw.  It is expected that this will take approximately four months to complete.  They apologise for the disruption and any inconvenience and thank everyone for their continued patience.
