Science Roadshow – RAF Education Programme 2018
This week Year 8s took part in a STEM Roadshow, delivered on behalf of the Royal Air Force. The roadshow ‘Fun with Flight’ explored the physics of flying and included some exciting demonstrations with students being invited to take part too. Drones, balloons, airships and even jet engines were explored allowing students to see how the physics they study in the classroom is an integral part of the work that engineers undertake in the RAF and other engineering organisations. The aim of the roadshow is to increase the number of students taking STEM subjects in the future and, judging by the response of our students, it was a definite success.
Storyteller visits Rossett
Last week we welcomed Regie from Destination Venus, Harrogate’s comic book shop, who spoke to students from all years about comic books and graphic novels. He talked about the wide variety of characters and storylines in the world of graphic narratives, and gave tips on creating comic strips. Regie is really keen to encourage creativity and students can swap any comic strips they have drawn for selected comic books in store. His passion for this genre really enthused our students, who ranged from keen comic book fans to those new to the genre and his visit was a great success.
This week Year 7s attended sessions with the Storyteller, Susanna Oldfield, which included an African wisdom tale followed by the story of Perseus and Medusa. There was lots of audience participation with the Year 7s taking the parts of Medusa and her sisters – who shared one eye, one tooth and one nose! Susanna then ran a workshop covering storytelling techniques with a group of Year 7 and Year 8 students. Susanna emailed to say how much she had enjoyed the day “It is always such a joy to perform and work with your students.
Students have raised over £1700 today for Sports Relief – thanks to everyone for their support. Staff and students have supported the cause by wearing a variety of sports attire and completing the Sport Relief ‘Steps’ challenge through the official app.
Pathways to Law Programme
This week a group of Year 12 students visited Leeds Trinity University as part of the Pathways to Law Programme. Students had the opportunity to learn about the nature of studying the subject at undergraduate level, as well as lectures on the fundamental aspects of English law.
