Rossett News Update – 14 July 2017

Annual Summer building Work

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed the start of our annual summer building works on site. For the third year running we were successful in our applications for two CIF (Conditions Improvement Fund) bids from the EFA (Education Funding Agency). In total we will be spending approximately £450,000 on various improvements to the school this year.

By the time that the students return in September, the final stage of our three-year re-roofing plan will have been completed. We are also building a new ‘Student Reception’ entrance to the front of the school. This will provide a dedicated student service that will include: a centralised signing-in/out facility; First Aid; iPad booking; lost property; bus passes; and a ‘forgotten item pick up’ zone.

In addition, we will have upgraded the security of the school entrances to meet recommended standards. Parents, students and visitors will notice these changes to fencing and gates from September 2017. Our driveway and pedestrian access from Green Lane and Pannal Ash Road will be open in the mornings whilst staff are on duty, but closed during the day; access will be available through an intercom system.

External block doors will also variously be operated by timing systems and cards to ensure that only Rossett staff, students and approved visitors are able to access the school buildings.

Sixth Formers and Staff will register on-site and off-site activity using their photographic identity cards. Students have already had assemblies explaining the changes for September.

Trip to Cambridge

A group of Year 12 AMA students got a taste of life at Cambridge University last week, staying over in the University’s student accommodation at St Catharine’s College. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to discover more about life at a top university.  Students spent two days in Cambridge attending lectures and meeting current students.

Year 6 Induction Days

We welcomed Year 6 pupils from over 40 feeder schools this week.  They took part in a variety of activities and lessons which enabled them to get to know Rossett better, meet some staff and make new friends.  They also had an opportunity to try on the new school blazer whilst in school.  We were impressed with their positive attitude and are looking forward to meeting them again in September.  We look forward to welcoming the students and their families to the Family Learning Day this Saturday when they have the opportunity to experience further lessons at Rossett.

PSHEE timetable days

On Wednesday students enjoyed a variety of differently timetabled days:

Year 7: Risk Prevention Day – students looked at home, school and personal safety and First Aid including a practical session on life saving.

Year 8: The Real Game – the day offered students the opportunity to participate in workshops and simulations of working life.

Year 9: Sexual Awareness – students considered methods of contraception, how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and they also learnt about sex and the law and specifically informed consent.

Year 10: Personal Safety Day – this included a demonstration from the fire service.

Year 12 Taster Day

On Thursday, students returning to Year 12 had a further ‘taste’ of the academic demand of the lessons they will be taking in September as well as sampling the food on offer and experiencing the demands of a little bit of homework!  We were impressed with the approach and attitude of the students as they prepared to be the second Year 12 cohort taking advantage of our new accommodation.

‘Who Do We Think We Are’ Day

Today our Year 7s have experienced a whole range of activities looking at identity and how we are all diverse, original and unique members of the community.  They have had cultural experiences; looked at faiths around the world; learnt about Hinduism; practised yoga;  and danced their way to the end of the day.

Year 10 Employability Conference

Our Year 10s participated in an Employers’ Conference today with over thirty local and national employers, along with representatives from Further and Higher educational establishments visiting the school.  There were keynote speakers during the day and our students arrived to school dressed in business attire to take part in individual mock interviews.  Our visitors were very impressed with the students.

A Level Design Exhibition 2017

Rossett’s contribution to the Red Kite Alliance A Level Design Exhibition 2017 can be seen at Harewood House next week. The exhibition will be situated in the Courtyard Education Suite at Harewood and will be open to the public from Friday 22 July until Sunday 4 September 2017.  There will be a private viewing of the work, which covers Art & Design, Product Design, Photography, Textiles and Graphic Design on the evening of Thursday 20 July for the students who are exhibiting work and their families.   Entrance to the Summer Exhibition is free to Harewood Card holders or is included with a Grounds and Below stairs ticket.  Please note the exhibition will be closed to the public on 30 and 31 July.

Celebration

Last Thursday Rossett held its annual Art & DT Exhibition celebrating our students’ GCSE and A Level work.  We also held an event to celebrate the life of Mr Wilson and were pleased to welcome his family to join us so that they could learn of the impact he had on our school community, with tributes from both staff and students.  It was an incredibly poignant evening for everyone, especially as it was combined with the art exhibition with many reminders of the work of students who Mr Wilson had influenced.  The event ended with a balloon release and a collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance which raised over £330.

Adult Learning Programme

We have just launched the new Autumn 2017 Adult Learning Programme which includes a Babysitting course for 14-16 year olds run by Ms Rogers, our First Aid and Health Manager (a qualified St John’s Ambulance trainer) and a new course ‘Improve your maths to help with homework’ run by Mr Hopkins from our Maths faculty.  If you are interested in signing up for these courses please click the link
